Steam Cloud is supposed to keep your saves and settings consistent across PCs. When you see Steam Cloud error messages like Unable to sync, Steam can’t reconcile local files with what’s stored in the cloud.
This guide walks you through a dependable troubleshooting path: quick resets first, then save-folder permissions, cache clearing, conflict resolution, and finally deeper network/permission fixes—plus what to try if nothing works.

What Steam Cloud Unable to sync means
The phrase Unable to sync usually points to one of these issues: a client-side save write failure, an authentication/network problem, a permissions or sandbox restriction, a corrupted local cache, or a conflict between local and cloud versions of the same files.
Steam Cloud doesn’t “partially” fix every situation. If Steam detects it can’t verify or upload the expected data, it may keep retrying and display the same message for that game.

Before you change anything: prerequisites
Before you start modifying anything, confirm you’re working with stable basics and you have a fallback copy.
- Back up your saves for the affected game (copy the entire save folder somewhere safe).
- Make sure you’re logged into the correct Steam account on the same PC.
- Check that you’re not in offline mode and that Steam has network access.
- Know which game is failing—Steam Cloud errors are per title, not “global” for all games.
Quick fixes that often work immediately
Start with the least disruptive changes. These resolve a lot of transient sync and session issues.
- Restart Steam: Fully quit Steam, then open it again and leave it running for a few minutes while it attempts sync.
- Confirm Steam isn’t offline: In Steam, go to Steam > Go Offline and ensure it’s unchecked.
- Check connection: If you switched networks (VPN, hotspot, office LAN), reconnect and retry.
- Run the game once: Some games only produce the latest cloud candidate after you start them and reach a save checkpoint.
Method 1: Restart Steam Cloud safely (and avoid partial sync)
Steam Cloud runs as part of the Steam client. A clean Steam restart helps when the client is stuck retrying the same sync attempt.
- Close the affected game.
- On Windows: open Task Manager and end any stray steam.exe processes.
- On macOS: quit Steam (Cmd+Q) and ensure no Steam process remains.
- Launch Steam again, log in, and wait 2–5 minutes.
- Open the game, make a quick save, exit the game, then return to Steam to watch for sync status.
Method 2: Verify the game can write to its save folder
If the game can’t write locally, Steam has nothing valid to upload—so cloud sync fails.

Method 3: Clear the Steam Cloud cache and force resync
Steam Cloud relies on local state to track what it believes should be synced. If that state is corrupted, clearing it can force a fresh comparison.
Important: Back up your local saves first, because clearing Steam state can cause you to choose between versions if a conflict is detected.
Windows (Steam Cloud storage cache)
- Close the affected game and quit Steam.
- Press Win + R, paste:

- Open the folder for your SteamID.
- Find the folder related to the affected game/app ID (you can get the app ID in Steam: right-click game > Manage > Properties > Details).
- Rename or back up the relevant folder (don’t delete blindly), then start Steam and launch the game once.
macOS
- Quit Steam.
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder….
- Paste:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata
- Open your SteamID folder and locate the affected app’s save state directory.
- Back up/rename the relevant folder, then restart Steam and try syncing again.
Method 4: Resolve local vs cloud conflicts
One of the most common reasons for Unable to sync is that Steam detects mismatched save versions. You typically need to choose the correct copy.
Recommended Free Tools
- Reopen Steam and go to your game’s Properties.
- Look for Steam Cloud conflict prompts (sometimes Steam shows an option to upload/download).
- If Steam offers a choice, pick the version that matches your expected progress.
- After choosing, let Steam run and wait for it to finish uploading/downloading.
If Steam never presents a choice and keeps failing, proceed with conflict-proofing: keep your local save copy, then clear/rename Steam’s cached state (Method 3) so Steam must re-evaluate.
Method 5: Check Steam Cloud’s per-game status and settings
Steam Cloud isn’t universal across all games. Some titles don’t sync certain files, or Cloud can be temporarily unavailable.
How to check whether Steam Cloud is involved
- Right-click the affected game in your Steam library.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and look for Steam Cloud information.
- If the game shows Steam Cloud entries, confirm which files Steam tracks.
Check game support pages when the sync fails repeatedly
Many developers list Steam Cloud behaviors and known issues in patch notes or support threads. If you see multiple players reporting the same timestamped problem, it may be a server-side incident.
Method 6: Flush Steam client network issues
Network interruptions can block uploads or keep Steam from downloading the latest cloud state, resulting in Unable to sync.

- Disable VPN/proxy temporarily (if you use one).
- Restart your router (optional but effective).
- On Windows, flush DNS: open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
- Restart Steam and try again after a fresh game save.
- If you use a firewall app (like 3rd-party security suites), ensure Steam has permission to connect.
Method 7: Fix permissions and antivirus/firewall blocks (Windows + macOS)
Anti-malware tools and hardened permissions can stop Steam or the game from accessing save files, which then cascades into cloud failures.
Windows
- Run Steam as normal: Avoid running as admin unless you need to (mismatched privileges can cause odd access patterns).
- Windows Security: In Virus & threat protection > Manage settings, temporarily verify real-time protection isn’t quarantining files.
- Controlled folder access: If enabled, allow Steam and the game executable.
Also check that your save directory isn’t marked Read-only in file properties.
macOS
- Check System Settings > Privacy & Security for app permissions prompts.
- If you use endpoint/security software, allow Steam (and the game) to access Documents/Application Support folders.
- Verify the save folder isn’t locked via file permissions.
Method 8: Reinstall the affected game (last resort)
If the save state is damaged or the game’s local data is inconsistent, a clean reinstall can fix sync by recreating the proper local file structure.
- Back up your local save folder first.
- Uninstall the affected game from Steam.
- Reinstall the game.
- Launch it and create a new save.
- Exit and wait for Steam Cloud to sync.
This is last-resort because reinstalling can take time and doesn’t guarantee a fix if the issue is permission/network-related.

- Try syncing after a fresh save created at a new checkpoint.
- Test a different game that uses Steam Cloud to see whether the problem is global (Steam client/network) or specific to one title.
- Check Steam status for outages (Steam services can occasionally degrade).
- Inspect Steam logs to see error codes and timestamps.
To inspect logs, you can use Steam’s debug logging: enable Steam logging in the Steam client, reproduce the failure, then check the generated log files for the exact sync error and app ID context.
Common mistakes that make it worse
- Clearing Steam cache repeatedly without backing up saves—this can multiply conflicts.
- Changing multiple variables at once (VPN + firewall + cache) so you can’t tell what fixed it.
- Using offline mode and then switching accounts—Steam may queue uploads and fail when it reconnects.
- Deleting local saves after an error instead of resolving the conflict choice.
- Assuming the issue is global. Many Unable to sync errors are per-game.
FAQs
Does Steam Cloud support work if the game is installed on an external drive?
Often yes, but external drives can complicate permissions or drive letter changes. Ensure the game’s save folder path remains stable and the drive isn’t disconnected when Steam is syncing.
Will disabling Steam Cloud fix the error?
It may stop the error prompt, but it won’t repair the missing sync. If you disable Cloud, your progress may only save locally until you re-enable it and resolve any conflicts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does Steam show a sync error but my saves look updated?
You might be seeing successful local saves while the cloud upload fails. The only reliable sign is whether Steam reports the sync completion for that app.
Can I manually copy saves to fix Steam Cloud?
You can, but you must match the game’s expected save format and location. Back up first, then place saves in the correct folder. If Steam detects mismatch, it can still require a conflict resolution choice.
Is there a difference between Steam Cloud and Steam Play/Proton save handling?
Yes. Proton setups can store files differently under compatibility layers. If you’re on Steam Deck or using Proton, permissions and save path resolution may differ, so focus on correct save folder location for that environment.
Bottom Line
Start with the basics—restart Steam, confirm the game can save locally, then resolve permissions and cache/state issues. Most Unable to sync cases come down to write access, a conflict between versions, or a client/network interruption.
