Customize DayZ Expansion by installing the mod bundle and matching mission files, launching the server with the correct profile, then editing the generated JSON settings in that active profile. Traders, airdrops, AI, safe zones and most Expansion systems have separate files, while mission content and vanilla gameplay remain in the mission folder. Back up each file, preserve its schema and version fields, validate the JSON, and restart the server after every controlled change.

Understand where DayZ Expansion settings live
Expansion is not controlled by one master file. A running server combines three configuration layers, and confusing them is the most common reason a change appears to do nothing.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Layer | Typical location | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Expansion profile settings | ExpansionMod/Settings beneath the server profile passed with -profiles |
General systems, markets, airdrops, AI, safe zones and other generated Expansion options. |
| Expansion mission content | The map mission folder imported from the matching Expansion mission package | Map data, economy XML, optional traders, missions, markers, vehicles, territories and related content. |
| DayZ server configuration | serverDZ.cfg and the launch command |
Server identity, mission name, profile path, mod loading and engine-level switches such as enableCfgGameplayFile. |
The exact filesystem path varies by host. The reliable reference is the profile directory actually supplied in the launch command, not a similarly named folder elsewhere on disk. Expansion normally creates its settings after the server has started successfully at least once.
Prepare the server before editing
Install matching files
Install the complete Expansion mod bundle on the server and download the current Expansion mission files for the same map and mod version. Import the required mission content into the map mission as described by the hosting documentation. A mission template can include economy XML and optional mapping or trader content; copying only the JSON folder is not a complete installation.

Keep the mission package and mod build synchronized. Updating the mod while retaining an older mission template can leave missing keys, incompatible data or a mission that will not load. Treat a map change as a separate deployment: use the mission template intended for that map rather than renaming an unrelated folder.
Back up before the first change
Stop the server and copy the entire active profile, the mission folder and serverDZ.cfg to a dated backup location. A useful convention is backup-YYYY-MM-DD followed by the Expansion version and map name. Preserve the original directory structure so a rollback is a file replacement, not a reconstruction exercise.
- Back up before installing a new Expansion version.
- Keep a known-good copy of every file you edit.
- Change one settings family at a time so a failure has a clear cause.
- Record the intended change and the restart time in a simple change log.
Set launch parameters correctly
The server must load the right profile and the right mod classes before any JSON setting can take effect. Bohemia’s documented parameters include the following:
| Parameter | Purpose | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
-config=serverDZ.cfg |
Selects the server configuration file. | Use the file that contains the server’s current settings. |
-profiles=... |
Selects the profile directory. | Expansion’s generated settings are normally beneath this path. |
-mission=... |
Selects the exact mission template and map. | The mission name must match the folder name exactly; an extra or missing character prevents loading. |
-mod=... |
Loads mods that connecting clients also need. | Expansion client components belong here, in the required load order. |
-serverMod=... |
Loads server-side-only mods. | Do not put client-required content here or clients will not receive it. |
-port=... |
Selects the game port. | Use the port configured for your firewall and host. |
An Expansion launch example therefore includes -config, -port, -mod and -profiles, with the mission parameter pointing to the installed map mission. Do not copy a command blindly from another server: verify every path, mission name and mod name against your own installation.
Start once and find the active settings
- Start the server with the intended profile and mission arguments.
- Wait until the server has completed startup, then stop it cleanly.
- Open the profile directory passed by
-profiles. - Locate
ExpansionMod/Settings. The host may place the profile in a provider-specific parent directory, but the Expansion subfolder should be beneath the active profile. - Copy the settings folder before opening any file for editing.
Common files include GeneralSettings.json, MarketSettings.json, AirdropSettings.json, AISettings.json and SafeZoneSettings.json. Additional files can appear as the mod or mission evolves. Do not assume that a file found in an old backup is active; compare its parent profile path with the launch command.
Use a safe JSON editing workflow
Expansion expects a particular JSON schema. Preserve the existing object hierarchy, property names, capitalization and version fields. JSON is strict: a missing comma, an extra comma, an unmatched brace or a quote inside a string can make the file unreadable.

- Stop the server before editing. Some hosts overwrite generated files during shutdown, so editing a live file can lose your change.
- Copy the original file and give the copy a dated name outside the active settings directory.
- Open the active file in a syntax-aware editor. Use plain UTF-8 text and avoid word-processor formatting.
- Edit only documented fields. Do not delete a version property or an object that you do not understand.
- Run a JSON syntax check in your editor or a trusted validator. A syntax check confirms valid JSON, not that the values make sense for your map.
- Upload or save the validated file to the exact active profile or mission directory.
- Restart the server and inspect the startup log or RPT file for parse errors and warnings.
- Join as a test player and verify the behavior in game before making another change.
Keep the generated structure when an editor exports a file. Reformatting whitespace is harmless; changing nesting, renaming keys or converting numbers to quoted strings can be functional changes.
Configure broad Expansion systems
General settings, mapping and interiors
GeneralSettings.json contains broad Expansion switches. The hosting guidance specifically identifies custom mapping and building interiors as options that can consume significant resources. On an underpowered server, disable those options as a capacity test. This is a troubleshooting measure, not a guarantee of a performance fix; monitor startup time, stalls and log warnings after the change.
Make one general change at a time. If disabling custom mapping removes the stall, re-enable it later only after testing the map and player count you expect. Keep a record of the original values so you can distinguish a capacity limitation from a malformed setting.
Traders, prices, stock and categories
Trader behavior is split between MarketSettings.json and related market or category files in the mission and settings structure. The files define the item class names, category nesting, prices and available stock. A class name that does not exist in the installed item definitions will not create a usable listing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Back up the market file and any related category files.
- Identify the existing category where the item belongs instead of creating a second, conflicting branch.
- Copy the spelling and capitalization of the item class name from the installed mod or mission data.
- Change one price, stock value or category at a time.
- Check that every object and array remains comma-separated and correctly closed.
- Restart and visit the relevant trader. Confirm the displayed price, stock and buy or sell action.
Exporting a market through a structured editor can reduce nesting mistakes, but inspect the resulting JSON before deployment. An editor that targets a different Expansion version may omit fields or write a schema the running server does not recognize.
Airdrops
AirdropSettings.json controls the Expansion airdrop behavior exposed by the installed version. Edit only fields documented for that version. After restarting, observe the complete cycle rather than checking only whether an announcement appears: verify the event trigger, aircraft or crate behavior, marker visibility and the final loot outcome that your configuration is intended to produce.

If an airdrop appears unchanged, confirm that the edited file is in the active profile and that no mission-specific setting overrides it. A valid JSON file in an inactive profile is indistinguishable from an ignored setting in game.
AI patrols and loadouts
AI patrol behavior is configured through AISettings.json and related mission or loadout files. Use the existing structure as the template for patrol groups, routes and equipment. Loadout entries must use class names available on the server; an invalid class can produce missing equipment or a startup warning.
Recommended Free Tools
- Change a single patrol parameter or loadout group.
- Validate the JSON and restart.
- Watch the RPT log for AI initialization messages.
- Test in a low-risk area before enabling larger patrol counts or more complex equipment.
- Only then adjust additional groups, routes or gear.
GUI tools can make nested patrol and loadout editing faster, but they do not remove the need to verify exported class names and version compatibility.
Safe zones
SafeZoneSettings.json and its zone data define protected areas. Coordinates, radius and map context must agree. A coordinate copied from another map can place the zone in the ocean or far outside the intended settlement.
- Confirm the map and coordinate system used by the mission.
- Choose a center coordinate that is easy to locate in game.
- Set a radius that covers the intended area without swallowing nearby roads, bases or trader approaches.
- Validate the file and restart.
- Enter the zone with a test character and check its protection, visual marker and boundary from several directions.
Keep overlapping zones deliberate. If two zones have different rules, test the overlap explicitly rather than assuming the larger radius wins.
Customize mission content beyond the profile JSON
Expansion mission and settings files cover more than the five common JSON families. Depending on the installed version and mission template, they can define map markers, missions, vehicles and territories, as well as optional trader content. These files belong to the mission package, not necessarily to ExpansionMod/Settings.

Map markers and missions
Use the mission data to add or adjust visible markers and mission definitions. Verify the marker coordinate on the actual map and check that mission objectives reference entities present in the server’s item and vehicle configuration. A marker can load successfully while pointing to an inaccessible or incorrect location, so test the complete objective in game.
Vehicles and territories
Vehicle and territory definitions should be edited with the same backup, syntax-check and restart process as profile settings. Keep ownership, coordinate and object relationships intact. If a territory or vehicle disappears after a restart, inspect the startup log first; a schema error can prevent the entire section from loading even when the surrounding file looks correct.
Expansion missions folder regeneration
If the Expansion missions folder is unexpectedly empty, the hosting guidance recommends deleting MissionSettings.json from the settings folder and restarting so mission data can be regenerated or reloaded. Back up that file first. This step is specific to the empty-folder symptom; do not delete it as a routine cleanup.

Not every gameplay option belongs to Expansion. Vanilla engine settings use cfggameplay.json in the mission folder and require enableCfgGameplayFile = 1 in serverDZ.cfg.
- Copy the correct
cfggameplay.jsoninto the active mission folder. - Set
enableCfgGameplayFile = 1inserverDZ.cfg. - Validate the JSON without changing its required structure.
- Restart the server and test the relevant vanilla behavior.
Editing an Expansion JSON file cannot enable this engine feature. Conversely, enabling the vanilla file does not replace Expansion’s trader, AI, airdrop or safe-zone settings.
Choose hand editing or a GUI editor
| Approach | Best for | Advantages | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-edit JSON | Administrators who need complete control or maintain files in version control. | No editor dependency; every supported field is available when you know the schema. | Highest risk of syntax, class-name and nesting errors. Validate every export and keep rollback copies. |
| Official Expansion Settings Editor | SafeZones, BaseBuilding, Trader Zones, AI Patrols, Player Spawns and Map Markers. | Visual forms reduce coordinate and nesting mistakes for supported systems. | Support is version-sensitive. Import files from the running server and inspect the export before uploading it. |
| DZconfig | Structured editing of markets, AI, safe zones, missions, vehicles, territories and airdrops. | Can generate files in the structure expected by the mod, making large nested edits faster. | Generated output still depends on the installed Expansion version and must be backed up, checked and tested. |
A GUI is not a substitute for filesystem access. You still need to know which profile is active, which mission is loaded and where the exported files must be placed. If the host does not expose the profile directory or launch arguments, a managed plan may limit what you can customize even when the editor can produce a file.
Best Value
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the profile, mission files, startup command and logs. That makes version control, automated backups and rapid rollback straightforward, but you are responsible for updates, storage, firewall rules and resource capacity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Managed hosting reduces routine operating work, yet the control panel may hide the profile path, restrict -profiles, limit -serverMod or prevent custom startup arguments. Before committing to a plan, confirm that you can upload mission files, edit the active profile and retrieve RPT logs. No universal hardware baseline is established for Expansion; requirements depend on the map, enabled systems, player count and other installed mods.
Validate and deploy each change
Use this deployment sequence for every settings family:
- Write down the desired outcome and the file that should control it.
- Stop the server and create a dated backup.
- Edit one file or one tightly related group of values.
- Check JSON syntax and confirm required version fields remain present.
- Upload to the active profile or mission path, not an archival copy.
- Start the server and read the RPT or console output from the beginning of startup.
- Join with a test character and exercise the changed feature.
- Keep the change only if the result and logs are clean; otherwise restore the previous file.
When a setting is ignored, compare the file timestamp and path with the launch profile, then search the log for the filename, a parse error or an unknown property. A clean startup does not prove that a coordinate, class name or gameplay value is sensible, so perform an in-game check as well.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server starts without Expansion behavior
- Check the exact Expansion mod names and their order in
-mod. - Move only genuinely server-side components to
-serverMod. - Confirm that the server is using the profile path passed by
-profiles. - Verify that
-missionnames an existing, matching mission template. - Read the RPT log for a missing dependency or failed initialization.
Settings reset after a restart
- Confirm that you edited the active profile’s
ExpansionMod/Settingsdirectory. - Check that the file was saved with valid JSON and the required version field.
- Make sure the host did not restore an automatic backup or regenerate the file.
- Upload the file while the server is stopped, then restart and inspect the log.
The Expansion missions folder is empty
Back up the settings first, delete MissionSettings.json from that settings folder as the documented recovery step, and restart. If the folder remains empty, verify the mission template, map and Expansion version before changing other files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe mission cannot be found
Compare the mission folder name with the value after -mission character by character. A single missing or extra character prevents the server from loading it. Also check capitalization on hosts whose filesystems treat names distinctly.
Custom mapping or interiors cause stalls
Disable the relevant custom mapping or building-interior options in GeneralSettings.json and restart as a capacity test. If the stall disappears, leave the options disabled while you evaluate map complexity, player count and other mods. Re-enable one option at a time only after collecting clean startup and gameplay results.
Vanilla gameplay JSON has no effect
Place cfggameplay.json in the active mission folder and set enableCfgGameplayFile = 1 in serverDZ.cfg. Restart after both changes. Editing the file without enabling the server flag leaves the engine using its default behavior.
Build a maintainable configuration
- Keep Expansion, mission files and editors on compatible versions.
- Store backups outside the live profile so regeneration cannot overwrite them.
- Use descriptive filenames for exported drafts and mark which one is active.
- Change one subsystem per restart whenever possible.
- Test traders, AI, airdrops and safe zones with a private character before announcing a wipe or rules change.
- Review coordinates after every map change; a setting that is valid on one map can be useless on another.
- When upgrading, compare the new generated files with your customized copies instead of replacing them blindly.
With this separation of launch arguments, profile settings, mission content and vanilla gameplay, Expansion customization becomes a controlled configuration process rather than trial and error. The safest pattern is always the same: identify the controlling layer, back it up, make one schema-preserving edit, validate, restart, read the log and test the result in game.
