Reach for a custom matcher, reuse strategy, URL-handling strategy, or title strategy only when the standard router options do not meet a concrete need. Angular cautions that custom strategies add complexity and may affect memory use.
Start with route configuration
Angular Router evaluates route definitions in order and uses the first matching route. Put specific routes before broad parameter routes and wildcard routes so that a general pattern does not capture a URL intended for a more precise route. See Angular’s route-definition guide.
For ordinary static paths, parameters, child routes, and catch-all behavior, use standard route configuration. The Route API documents the available route fields and matching semantics. Custom matching is not a substitute for clear route order.
Choose a matching rule that fits the URL
Use path and pathMatch for common patterns
Use path for conventional route patterns. The pathMatch option determines whether a route matches a URL prefix or the full path. Prefix matching is the default; choose 'full' when the entire path must match, particularly for an empty-path redirect.
#1 Best Overall
Use UrlMatcher for patterns path cannot express
A UrlMatcher is appropriate when the URL structure does not fit the normal path notation. It receives URL segments and returns either a match result or null. A successful result can specify the consumed segments and positional parameters, which become route parameters; returning null allows Angular to try another route. The matcher cannot be combined with path or pathMatch on the same route. See Angular’s custom route matching guide and the UrlMatcher API.
Configure redirects without accidental matches
Redirects use prefix matching by default, so a redirect can match paths with additional segments. Set pathMatch: 'full' when a redirect should apply only to the whole path. This is especially important for an empty-path redirect: without full matching, the empty prefix can match every URL and cause a redirect loop. Angular explains the behavior in its redirecting routes guide.

A redirect target may be a string or a function. A conditional redirect function runs during matching and has only the snapshot data available at that point. Do not base it on later-stage information such as resolved titles or lazy-loaded components, which is not accurately known then.
Use guards for conditional route eligibility
For runtime conditions, consider CanMatch. Its false result has a distinct fallback behavior: Angular can continue and try another matching route rather than treating the false result as a complete navigation block. This is useful when alternative route definitions should be considered. Consult Angular’s route guards guide for guard behavior.

Set route-driven page titles
A route can define a static title or use a resolver, and Angular updates the document title when the route activates. Use a custom TitleStrategy if titles need consistent composition, such as an application prefix or a breadcrumb convention. Angular’s route guide describes route titles and title strategies, and recommends appropriate titles for accessibility.
Customize navigation and router-wide settings
withRouterConfig and RouterModule.forRoot expose router-wide choices including canceled-navigation resolution, same-URL navigation, URL update timing, and default query-parameter handling. Angular documents defaults including ignoring same-URL navigation, deferred URL updates, and replacing query parameters when no handling option is specified. Change a setting to satisfy a defined navigation requirement rather than to customize behavior speculatively. The customizing route behavior guide covers these settings.

Preserve component state with route reuse
A custom RouteReuseStrategy can detach and retain a route so its component state survives navigation away and back. Detached route handles retain component instances and their view hierarchy, so a cache can consume memory. Decide which routes qualify, set bounds or expiry appropriate to the application, and clean up discarded handles; Angular documents destroyDetachedRouteHandle for cleanup. Implement reuse only where preserving state is worth the added lifecycle and memory-management work.
Share URL space with another routing system
A custom UrlHandlingStrategy lets Angular process only selected URLs and controls how Angular’s portion is extracted and merged. This can support incremental migrations or an application in which Angular shares URL space with a legacy or other routing system. Define the URL boundary and merge behavior carefully so each router handles the intended part. Angular discusses this use case in its customization guide.

- For conventional static, parameter, child, or wildcard routes, use route configuration and verify first-match order.
- For a redirect, decide whether prefix matching or a full-path match is intended; use full matching for empty-path redirects.
- For conditional route eligibility with fallback to another candidate, consider
CanMatch. - For an unusual structured URL that path notation cannot describe, use a narrow, understandable
UrlMatcher. - For retained component state, define the reuse cache policy and detached-handle cleanup.
- For a mixed routing application, specify which URLs Angular owns and how its URL portion is merged.
- For consistent document titles, use route titles or centralize composition in
TitleStrategy.
Angular’s guidance is to ensure the default router behavior does not meet the need before implementing a custom strategy. That keeps routing easier to reason about and avoids complexity that does not solve a real application requirement.
