Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To check whether your PC can run an open-world MMORPG, compare its hardware and software with the current requirements for that exact game and platform. Check your Windows version, CPU, graphics card and video memory, RAM, storage space and drive speed, DirectX support, and internet connection against both the publisher’s minimum and recommended tiers. Meeting minimum requirements is not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth performance in every area of a large online world.
Start with the exact game and platform
There is no universal hardware requirement for an open-world MMORPG. Requirements vary by title, and a publisher may update them. First identify the game and the version you intend to play—such as Windows PC or Steam—then find the publisher’s official system-requirements page. Note when you checked it, and read the notes as well as the headline specifications.

Use the game’s official page rather than relying on a general “MMORPG requirements” list. For example, Amazon Games lists New World: Aeternum PC requirements and warns that specifications may evolve. Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY XIV requirements page says its PC requirements are subject to change; the listed PC requirements are dated July 17, 2025.
Find your PC’s specifications
Record the following before comparing. On Windows, you can use the built-in Settings and System Information tools to identify hardware; exact menu labels can differ by Windows version. If a value is unclear, check the PC maker’s specifications or the component model rather than guessing from the computer’s marketing name.

- Windows edition and architecture: Check the Windows version and whether the operating system is 64-bit. A game may require a specific Windows release.
- CPU: Record the processor’s full model name, not just “Intel” or “AMD.”
- GPU and video memory: Record the graphics processor model and dedicated VRAM if applicable. A laptop’s integrated and dedicated graphics can have different capabilities.
- Installed RAM: Record system memory. Integrated graphics may share system RAM, so total installed memory does not necessarily equal memory available to the game.
- Storage: Check the game’s required capacity, your available free space, and the drive type. Some publishers specify a read-speed requirement as well.
- DirectX: Check whether the game requires a particular DirectX version and whether your graphics hardware and drivers support it.
- Internet: Confirm that you have the required connection. Online games may require broadband even when the game files are installed locally.
Compare every requirement, not just the graphics card
Make a line-by-line comparison with both requirement tiers. Do not assume that a newer-looking model, a brand name, or a similar number means two CPUs or GPUs are equivalent. If your component’s model is not listed, use a reputable, current hardware comparison to assess its performance; a near match is not a guaranteed pass.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Required Windows version and 64-bit support |
| CPU | Exact processor model against the minimum and recommended models |
| GPU | Exact graphics model, plus any stated VRAM requirement |
| Memory | Installed system RAM and any special condition for integrated graphics |
| Storage | Required free capacity, drive type, and specified read speed |
| Other requirements | DirectX version and broadband or other internet requirement |
Classify the result per component: meets minimum, meets recommended, or falls short. A PC can meet the minimum for one item and miss it for another. Do not treat one stronger part—such as a high-end GPU—as compensation for a CPU, OS, memory, storage, or network requirement the game also sets.

Understand what minimum and recommended mean
Minimum and recommended are separate reference points, not interchangeable labels. If your PC meets minimum but not recommended, the publisher’s minimum tier is the relevant comparison; the recommended tier is a better guide if you want the publisher’s recommended experience. Unless the publisher attaches a specific resolution, preset, and frame-rate target to a tier, the requirements page does not establish a precise FPS outcome for your PC.
One Square Enix PC Steam requirements article makes its targets explicit: its minimum tier is stated for 60 FPS at 1280×720 on Low, while its recommended tier is stated for 60 FPS at 1920×1080 on Highest. The same article notes a 2 GB VRAM requirement for minimum and requires 16 GB of system RAM when running on an Intel GPU in its recommended tier. Those are publisher-stated targets and conditions, not an independent guarantee for every PC configuration. Read the exact notes on the page for the game you intend to play.

Examples show why the exact page matters
The specifications below illustrate how different MMORPGs can set different bars. They are publisher-published requirements, not results from testing a particular PC. Use them as examples of what to look for, not as substitutes for checking the current page for your own game.

Specifications and notes are taken from the respective publisher pages: Amazon Games’ New World: Aeternum requirements, Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY XIV requirements, and Square Enix Support’s PC Steam requirements article. The last example’s page is useful because its performance targets and Intel GPU memory condition show why notes can matter as much as model names.

Check whether the game is available on your platform
Compatibility is useful only if the game is available to play. New World: Aeternum is a time-sensitive example: its Steam listing says it was delisted on January 15, 2026, and is planned to go offline on January 31, 2027. Do not assume a new buyer can purchase it or that it will remain playable indefinitely; check the current listing and service status before making plans.

Use the comparison to isolate the unmet requirement before considering an upgrade. A storage upgrade can address insufficient capacity or a drive-speed shortfall only if the replacement is compatible with your PC. Check the drive interface, form factor, and available motherboard slot. More storage will not remedy a CPU, GPU, operating-system, RAM, or internet shortfall.
If you compare two PCs or plan a component change, assess the CPU model, GPU and dedicated memory, system RAM, Windows support, storage capacity and speed, DirectX support, intended resolution and preset, and network requirements together. Verify upgrade compatibility for the exact machine before buying a replacement part; the game’s requirement alone cannot establish what your motherboard or laptop can accept.
