Press Windows+U to open Accessibility settings directly, or go to Start > Settings > Accessibility. Both sets of controls are ordinary Windows settings, so no extra hardware or software is required.
The two items are easy to confuse. The mouse pointer is the arrow you move with the mouse or touchpad. The text cursor, also called the insertion caret, is the thin line that marks where typed characters will appear. Windows treats them as separate controls, and you adjust them on separate pages.

Where each control lives
Accessibility settings group the pointer and caret options under two pages. The table below shows what each control changes, so you can pick the right page before you start.

Change the mouse pointer’s size and style
- Press Windows+U, or open Start > Settings > Accessibility.
- Select Mouse pointer and touch.
- Under Mouse pointer, drag the Size control until the preview and the pointer on your desktop are easy to see.
- Under Mouse pointer style, choose white, black, inverted, or one of the bright recommended colors. To use another color, select the custom-color option and pick one.
Size and style solve different problems. A larger pointer helps when you lose track of it, while a contrasting style helps when it blends into the background. If the pointer disappears against light or busy areas, try the inverted style or a custom color that contrasts with your typical windows. Microsoft’s guidance describes these as options for visibility; it does not name a single color that suits every screen or every user, so test a few against the wallpapers and apps you use most.

Change the text cursor’s thickness
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Text cursor.
- Under Text cursor thickness, move the slider while watching the preview.
Thickness changes the caret itself. A thicker caret is easier to spot in small text, although a very heavy setting can look crowded in dense documents, so stop at the width you can locate at a glance.
Make the text cursor easier to locate
The same Text cursor page contains Text cursor indicator, an optional feature that places a colored marker near the caret. Turn it on, then adjust its Size with the preview and choose a recommended color or a custom one. The indicator is a visibility aid layered on top of the caret. It does not replace the thickness slider, and you can use either setting alone or both together.

- Select Additional mouse settings, then open the Pointers tab.
- Choose a pointer scheme from the list, or select a single pointer type and browse for a replacement pointer file.
This route suits users who want a complete scheme or a specific pointer image. For the usual goal of a bigger or higher-contrast pointer, the Accessibility page is faster and easier to reverse.

Limits to keep in mind
- The controls adjust appearance only. They do not change how fast the pointer moves, which is handled in the mouse settings.
- Accessibility labels and page layout can change with Windows 11 feature updates. If a label differs from the one shown here, search the Accessibility page for the same word, such as “Size” or “thickness.”
- Microsoft’s support page for these features describes Windows 11 and Windows 10 in general terms. The exact paths above are the Windows 11 navigation routes, so check them against your build if your menus look different.
Quick way to check your changes
After adjusting the pointer, move it across a white document, a dark web page, and a busy image. After adjusting the caret, type a few words in a text editor and confirm that the cursor is visible at your normal reading distance. If either fails the test, return to the same page and adjust the slider or color again; the preview on each page updates as you change the value.
