How to Customize or Disable Touch Gestures on a Mac

Use Trackpad or Mouse settings to change individual gestures on a Mac. Accessibility settings handle three-finger drag and trackpad scrolling.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To change a trackpad gesture, open Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad, then adjust the specific control under Point & Click, Scroll & Zoom, or More Gestures. For a Magic Mouse, use System Settings > Mouse. Three-finger dragging and trackpad scrolling have separate controls in Accessibility settings. The choices shown depend on your Mac, connected device, and macOS version.

Change or turn off an individual trackpad gesture

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
  2. Select Trackpad in the sidebar. In older macOS versions, this app may be called System Preferences.
  3. Review Point & Click, Scroll & Zoom, and More Gestures. Turn off the relevant option or choose a different gesture where a menu is available.
  4. If you are unsure what an option does, select it to see the available choices and, where offered, an animation demonstrating the gesture.

Each control affects a particular action; you do not need to disable all multi-touch behavior to stop one unwanted gesture. Apple’s Trackpad settings guide describes the controls and notes that available options vary by device.

Point & Click

This section can include secondary click, Tap to click, and Look up & data detectors. For example, to stop tapping from registering as a click, turn off Tap to click if that option appears on your Mac.

Scroll & Zoom

Options can include Natural scrolling, pinch to zoom, Smart zoom, and Rotate. Turn off or change only the behavior you want to adjust; not every Mac shows every option.

Why your settings may look different

  • Device: A built-in or external trackpad and a Magic Mouse have separate settings panels. Trackpad settings are available for supported Mac notebooks; desktop Macs can use an external trackpad or mouse.
  • macOS version: System Settings may be called System Preferences on older systems, and Accessibility labels can differ.
  • Gesture availability: The choices shown depend on the Mac and connected input device. Apple’s examples use four fingers for Mission Control and switching full-screen apps, while noting that some macOS versions use three fingers. Follow the gesture description and demonstration shown on your own Mac.

An external trackpad is optional: you can change gestures using the trackpad already connected to your Mac. Apple’s gesture customization guide covers viewing and changing supported mouse or trackpad gestures.
