In Chrome, you can turn its automatically generated print headers and footers on or off, but the available guidance does not describe a control for editing their text or moving individual fields. To add custom wording or placement, save the page as a PDF and edit that file afterward.
Show or hide Chrome’s print headers and footers
- Open the page in Chrome and open Print: press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on macOS. You can also open Chrome’s menu and choose Print.
- Expand More settings in the print preview.
- Under Options, select or clear Headers and footers. Turn it on to include Chrome’s generated material; turn it off to omit it.
- Choose your printer or Save as PDF, then print or save.
Labels and layout can vary by platform and Chrome version. The consumer-menu path is described in a January 2026 Chrome Community answer, rather than a current official consumer help page: Chrome Community: “Setting Up Headers/Footers”.

Can you edit the text or move individual fields?
The available Chrome Community guidance describes a single on/off setting, not an editor for the generated fields. It says the print dialog does not let you change their text, remove one field independently, add custom text such as a company name, or reposition fields. This is community guidance, not an official current feature specification, so exact behavior may vary across builds.
If you need a custom header or footer, use Chrome to save the page as a PDF, then edit that saved file. Chrome’s PDF help confirms that its viewer can add text and save a changed copy, but it does not document dedicated controls for placing a page header or footer: Manage PDFs in Chrome. For precise, repeated placement across pages, a PDF editor with page-level header and footer tools may be more suitable.

If the Headers and footers option is missing
- Check Margins: A January 2024 Chrome Community user reported that changing Margins from None to Default made the option appear. This is a single-user troubleshooting observation, not a guaranteed fix. Chrome Community: “Headers and Footers MISSING in Chrome Print Menu”.
- Check whether Chrome is managed: On ChromeOS and Chrome browser for Windows, Mac, and Linux, an administrator can use the Print headers and footers policy to force or prevent printing them. The policy defaults to letting users decide, and administrators can allow users to override it. See Google Chrome Enterprise Help: Set Chrome policies for users or browsers.
- Reopen print preview: If the setting still does not appear, close the preview and reopen it after changing margins. If the device belongs to a workplace or school, ask its administrator whether print policy controls the option.
