Automate website performance monitoring by combining real-user monitoring (RUM) with repeatable synthetic tests. Use RUM to see what visitors experience across their devices, networks, and locations; use synthetic checks to reproduce changes and catch regressions. Track Core Web Vitals—LCP, INP, and CLS—alongside diagnostic signals such as request timing and client-side errors, then connect findings to releases and follow-up checks.
What automated website performance monitoring tells you
Monitoring is a loop: collect measurements, identify where and when performance changes, investigate the cause, make a fix, and verify the result. No single dashboard describes every visitor’s experience. Field data describes actual visits within its coverage and reporting window; controlled tests describe the conditions configured for the test.

Google Search Central defines Core Web Vitals as “a set of metrics that measure real-world user experience for loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability of the page.” Its current documented good targets are LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS below 0.1. These are targets, not guarantees for every visit. Google’s measurement guidance says 75% of page visits should meet the good threshold for each metric for a page or site to meet the recommended thresholds. Google Search Central’s Core Web Vitals documentation was updated 2025-12-10 UTC; consult it for current definitions and guidance.

The three Core Web Vitals
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): loading performance, measured by when the largest relevant content element becomes visible.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): responsiveness to user interactions.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): visual stability, measuring unexpected shifts in page layout.
Track the share of visits in the good, needs-improvement, and poor ranges rather than relying on a single average or median. Aggregates can conceal the slowest or most affected visits. Google’s measurement guidance explains the thresholds and field-data interpretation.

Real-user monitoring (RUM)
RUM collects performance signals from real sessions. It can expose variation by device, browser, network, geography, user behavior, and page content that a fixed test profile cannot capture. Use it to see which pages or visitor segments are affected and whether an issue persists after a release. Google recommends supplementing CrUX-based views with a site’s own RUM when more detailed and immediate feedback is needed. Collection requires an instrumentation and reporting path; Google’s web-vitals library is one documented way to collect field-measurable Web Vitals and send them to an API or analytics destination. Google’s measurement guide covers this approach.
Synthetic or lab monitoring
Synthetic checks run scripted tests under controlled settings, often with a chosen browser, device, network, location, cache state, and schedule. Their repeatability makes them useful for comparing a page before and after a change, testing staging environments, and catching regressions in development or CI. MDN recommends synthetic monitoring as part of regression testing and production monitoring. MDN’s web performance documentation provides context for performance testing.

A synthetic result is not a substitute for field outcomes. Lab CLS can miss shifts that happen after initial load if the test does not interact with the page. Field and lab LCP can differ because of redirects, connection latency, cache state, personalization, or screen-dependent content. A load-only synthetic test does not reproduce the range of interactions that INP reflects; Total Blocking Time may be used as a lab diagnostic or proxy, but it is not INP. Compare like with like: keep test settings consistent when evaluating regressions, and use field data to judge the visitor experience.

Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) is Google’s field dataset. PageSpeed Insights presents aggregate page-level and origin-level data for the prior 28 days; Search Console offers per-page performance information for verified properties and historical reporting. CrUX data is generally organized by calendar month, and the exact granularity depends on the tool. These are useful starting points, but their windows and coverage mean they are not instant traces of every visit. Add first-party RUM if you need more detailed or timely feedback. See Google’s measurement guidance.

Which metrics and signals should you monitor?
User-experience measures
- Monitor LCP, INP, and CLS in field data, segmented by page and meaningful visitor cohorts where your collection supports it.
- Review the percentage of visits meeting each good threshold, not only an overall average.
- Use synthetic tests to track repeatable page-load behavior and configured user journeys. Treat interaction-sensitive signals carefully if the script does not perform representative interactions.
Diagnostic signals
When a Web Vital changes, supporting diagnostics help narrow the cause. Depending on the monitoring tool, inspect request waterfalls, network timing, page requests, client-side errors, HTTP errors, test history, and deployment markers. Uptime checks answer whether a page or service responds; they do not establish that it feels fast to visitors. Cloudflare documents network timing and HTTP error analysis, while DebugBear documents request diagnostics. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not independent product evaluations. Cloudflare Observatory documentation and DebugBear documentation describe their respective features.
Build an automated monitoring loop
- Establish a baseline. Review CrUX or Search Console field data where available. Pick representative URLs and journeys, then define the device, location, and network profiles for repeatable tests.
- Instrument field measurement. Choose a RUM or analytics path that records the signals you need. Review its data collection, privacy controls, coverage, and any required Content Security Policy (CSP) changes before deployment.
- Schedule controlled checks. Run synthetic tests on important URLs on a schedule and around development or release changes. Keep settings stable enough to make comparisons meaningful; record intentional test-profile changes.
- Segment and investigate. When an alert fires, identify affected pages and visitor segments. Use waterfalls, asset details, timing data, and error breakdowns to form a specific hypothesis rather than treating a score as a diagnosis.
- Set budgets and alerts for your context. Define thresholds around the site’s key journeys, traffic, and release risk. A useful alert points to a change someone can investigate; there is no universal alert policy for every site.
- Fix, retest, and verify. Reproduce the problem where possible, make one focused change, and rerun the controlled test. Then watch field data over an appropriate reporting window to see whether real visits improve.
How to select a monitoring service
Compare tools by what they measure and how findings enter your workflow. Vendor documentation describes capabilities, not a neutral head-to-head test; confirm current plan availability and terms before choosing.

| Cloudflare Observatory / Web Analytics | RUM and synthetic monitoring, Core Web Vitals, performance suggestions, network timing, HTTP error analysis, and synthetic pass/fail status. | Observatory is described as a beta product. RUM inclusion and geographic coverage can vary by customer plan and settings. See Cloudflare Observatory and Cloudflare Web Analytics. |
| Amazon CloudWatch RUM | Actual-session page-load times, client-side errors, user behavior, browser and device breakdowns, anomaly visualization, and debugging context. | A relevant option for teams already using AWS. See Amazon CloudWatch RUM documentation. |
| Calibre | RUM, CrUX, synthetic tests, reporting, alerts, performance budgets, and integrations including GitHub, Slack, Zapier, API, and CLI. | Verify current plan terms and feature availability directly. See Calibre documentation. |
| DebugBear | Scheduled Lighthouse-based lab tests, CrUX data, RUM, uptime monitoring, request diagnostics, alert controls, and performance budgets. | Verify current plan terms and feature availability directly. See DebugBear documentation. |
For any candidate, check RUM coverage and privacy controls, CrUX or Search Console context, device and location controls, repeat scheduling, scripted-flow support, diagnostic depth, alerting and budgets, and CI/CD, API, or CLI integrations. Also check the collection regions and any CSP requirements. Cloudflare says its Web Analytics collects timing metrics and does not track individual end users across customer Internet properties; that statement applies to Cloudflare’s documented service, not to RUM products generally. See Cloudflare Web Analytics collection documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do good Core Web Vitals guarantee a search-ranking improvement?
No. Google says good Core Web Vitals align with what its core ranking systems seek to reward, alongside other page-experience aspects; a good score does not guarantee a ranking gain.
Does RUM necessarily track individual people?
No universal answer applies across vendors. Check the named provider’s collection and privacy documentation; Cloudflare specifically says it does not track individual end users across customer Internet properties.
