To customize an AI assistant, match the feature to the scope you need: use account-wide instructions for preferences you want applied broadly, memory for relevant context drawn from past interactions, project settings for one continuing body of work, and reusable assistants for repeated specialized tasks. Style controls, where available, shape tone and format. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude offer different combinations of these features, with different account and availability limits.
Choose the right kind of customization
“Customize” can mean several different things. These features are not interchangeable: an instruction tells an assistant what to do, memory can supply context from earlier interactions, and a project can keep instructions and materials together for a specific effort.

| Need | Best-fit feature | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Apply preferences across ordinary chats | Account-level instructions or preferences | You state guidance directly, such as your preferred level of detail or response format. |
| Use relevant details from earlier interactions | Memory or past-chat personalization | The service may use information from prior chats or other available sources. Review its controls and eligibility before relying on it. |
| Keep one ongoing effort organized | Project instructions and materials | Instructions and files are scoped to the project rather than every chat. |
| Repeat a specialized task | A reusable assistant or Gem | A saved setup carries task-specific guidance into future uses. |
| Change how responses sound or look | Style controls, where available | Choose or define a tone and presentation format. |
Before setting anything up, decide what should persist and where. A preference such as “use plain language” may belong in account-level instructions; details for a particular report belong in its project; and a recurring workflow may benefit from a reusable task setup. Avoid putting sensitive information into persistent settings unless you understand the service’s storage and deletion controls.

Customize ChatGPT
Set account-wide Custom Instructions
Custom Instructions are direct guidance for ChatGPT, rather than details it infers from previous conversations. Open Settings → Personalization on web or desktop, or Settings → Customize ChatGPT on iOS or Android. OpenAI says the feature is available on all plans across these platforms, though the character allowance differs: 1,500 characters for Free and Go users, and 5,000 characters for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education users. These are current product limits documented by the OpenAI Help Center; check the live setting in case they change.
#1 Best Overall
Write instructions as observable behaviors, not broad aspirations. For example: “Lead with the answer, use short paragraphs, define technical terms, and flag uncertainty.” You can edit or remove the instructions, and OpenAI says changes apply immediately to all chats. Keep the guidance concise enough to fit the limit on your plan.
Use Memory for context from interactions
ChatGPT Memory serves a different purpose: it can use relevant preferences and details developed from chats and other available sources. Depending on availability, those sources may include past chats, saved memories, files, or connected-app content. OpenAI says memory features and controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Check OpenAI’s Memory documentation for the controls available to your account.
Turning Memory off does not delete past chats. Information may be stored in different places, so removing a memory and deleting a conversation are not necessarily the same action; use the relevant deletion controls for where the information is kept.

Keep ongoing work in a Project
Projects bring related chats, files, and instructions together. Project instructions apply only inside that project and override global Custom Instructions there, which is useful when one piece of work needs different rules from your usual chats. Project availability and sharing depend on plan and workspace settings. See OpenAI’s Projects documentation for details.
Customize Gemini
Set instructions for supported chats
On desktop, Google documents the path Settings & help → Personal Intelligence → Instructions for Gemini. These instructions can set preferences such as starting with a brief summary or using bullets for long passages. Google says the feature requires a personal Google Account; it is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts, and it does not apply in some features, including Gems. You can edit, delete, or switch instructions off. Google also cautions that requests to forget or avoid topics may not always work perfectly. See Google’s instructions guide for current details.
Use a Gem for a repeated task
Gems are customized versions of Gemini for a particular goal or recurring task. Use one when you want task-specific instructions available as a reusable shortcut, rather than applying those rules broadly to supported chats. Google provides guidance for using Gems and getting started with them.
Rank #3
Enable past-chat personalization when eligible
Google documents personalization using memory of past Gemini chats as a separate feature from general instructions and Gems. Its stated prerequisites include being at least 18, using a personal Google Account, and having Keep Activity enabled. The feature is unavailable in some experiences, including Gems and Live chats, and can be turned off. Check Google’s past-chat personalization guide to confirm eligibility and controls for your account.
Customize Claude
Set profile preferences for conversations
Claude’s profile preferences apply across conversations, making them the account-level option for broad guidance. They are distinct from remembered information: a preference you enter is direct instruction, not a project rule or a past-chat search feature.
Use project instructions for focused work
Project instructions apply only to chats in that project. They are a better fit for a particular client, research effort, or writing assignment than an account-wide preference. Anthropic says Projects are currently available to users on paid Claude plans.
Rank #4
Choose a Style for tone and format
Claude Styles control response tone and format, including custom communication patterns. Use a Style when you want a presentation choice to shape responses, while keeping project-specific facts and task rules in the relevant project. Anthropic describes profile preferences, projects, and Styles in its personalization guide.
Do not assume past-chat search is universal
Anthropic’s help article describes past-chat search as rolling out to Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, with expansion planned. Availability may have changed, so verify the current interface and plan details; this is separate from profile preferences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWrite instructions that work in practice
Good instructions describe repeatable behaviors and leave room for the assistant to respond to the actual request. A compact set might specify audience, level of detail, structure, and how to handle uncertainty:
- Audience: “Assume I know the basics; explain specialist terms.”
- Format: “Start with the conclusion, then use headings and bullets when they improve scanning.”
- Voice: “Use a direct, neutral tone; avoid sales language.”
- Uncertainty: “Say when information is incomplete or may have changed; do not invent missing facts.”
Keep durable preferences in broad settings and put temporary or project-specific rules in the project or reusable task setup. For instance, a preference for concise explanations can be global, while a report’s required citation style belongs with that report. After saving, test the setup with a representative request and adjust any instruction that produces unwanted behavior.
Check availability and controls before relying on a feature
Settings labels, eligibility, and capabilities vary by account, location, plan, platform, age, and workspace, and providers can change them. Gemini’s general instructions and its past-chat personalization have different prerequisites and exceptions; ChatGPT’s memory controls can vary; Claude’s Projects have a stated paid-plan boundary, while past-chat search is described as rolling out. Consult the linked official help pages and the controls shown in your own account before moving important work onto a feature.
