No toy is established as a treatment for delayed speech. The most useful playthings are ones a child enjoys and can explore with a caregiver—such as pretend-play toys, blocks, crayons, paper, and books. They can create opportunities for shared attention and conversation, but they should not replace a developmental check or speech-language evaluation when you have concerns.
Which toys can support interaction?
Think of toys as materials for play together, not products that teach a child to talk. The caregiver’s responsive interaction is the point: join the child’s activity, follow their interests, and make room for turn-taking.

Pretend-play toys
Dolls, toy food, toy vehicles, or a stuffed animal can give you a shared theme. Follow what the child does with the toy and add a short comment or action rather than directing them through a script. The AAP’s toy guidance recommends a range of toys, including dolls and vehicles, while its parent guidance on language delays encourages playing, reading, and talking with young children.
Open-ended creative materials
Blocks, crayons, and paper can be used in many ways, making it easier to follow a child’s lead. The CDC’s child-led play guidance uses these as examples of materials for imaginative play. You might imitate a tower-building action, describe a color, or draw alongside the child without turning the activity into a lesson.

Books
Shared book reading offers a chance to look at pictures and talk about what interests the child. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) includes book sharing among enrichment activities. CDC’s age-two milestones also include pointing to items in a book when asked.
How to choose a plaything
- Choose for interaction: Look for something that gives you a natural way to join, imitate, take turns, or describe what is happening.
- Allow flexible play: Open-ended materials and pretend-play objects can be used in different ways instead of requiring one correct action.
- Follow the child: Match the activity to the child’s interests and developmental level. No particular toy is required to reach a milestone.
- Check safety and age guidance: Follow the age label and watch for small detachable parts. CDC cautions against toys with small detachable parts for very young children.
- Be cautious about screens and automated talking: AAP guidance notes that tablet-based toys do not provide the real-life facial expressions, gestures, and vocalizations children experience with people.
These are practical categories, not a ranked therapeutic list. The cited guidance does not establish that one type of toy improves speech outcomes more than another.

How to play without making it a test
- Let the child choose. Offer a toy or book, then follow the child’s interest rather than repeatedly asking them to name things or perform.
- Imitate and describe. Copy an action the child is doing, then add a brief, natural description. CDC recommends child-led strategies such as imitation and description.
- Pause for a response. Give the child time to respond in whatever way they can: a look, gesture, sound, sign, or word. Communication is not limited to spoken words.
- Share books and pictures. Talk about the pictures that attract the child’s attention; make it an exchange, not a quiz.
- Keep play in its proper role. Toys can support everyday interaction, but they are not a substitute for assessment or individualized support.
What milestones can tell you—and what they can’t
CDC’s age-two milestone guidance includes pointing to things in a book when asked, saying at least two words together, pointing to at least two body parts when asked, and using gestures beyond waving and pointing. CDC defines milestones as things most children—75% or more—can do by a certain age. Its checklist helps families monitor development; it is not a substitute for validated screening or a diagnosis.

ASHA describes a commonly used criterion for late language emergence at 24 months as fewer than 50 expressive words and no two-word combinations. An evaluation considers more than vocabulary: it may look at language comprehension, gestures, social communication, symbolic play, and developmental trajectory. A single milestone or checklist item cannot diagnose an individual child.

When to seek professional guidance
If you are concerned about your child’s communication or development, tell the child’s doctor and ask whether an evaluation is appropriate. You can also consider an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Do not wait to see whether a toy resolves a possible delay. An SLP can assess a child’s communication across areas such as understanding, gestures, and social communication, not just spoken-word count.
ASHA reports estimates of late language emergence of 13.5% among 18- to 23-month-old toddlers and 16%–17.5% among children ages 30 to 36 months, citing studies published in 2003 and 2002, respectively. These population estimates are not current measurements of an individual child’s prospects.
