You can adjust which notifications your Android phone sends, and how they alert you, but Google’s Android Auto documentation does not describe a setting to hide or rearrange individual status icons. The status area shows the time, signal strength and battery status; its numbered circle opens the notification center and counts missed calls, messages or alerts.
What Android Auto’s status icons show
Google’s Android Auto interface guide describes the status area as showing the time, signal strength and battery status. A numbered circle represents the count of missed calls, messages or alerts in the notification center. Tap the circle to open that center.

The guide does not document a control for hiding, moving or choosing individual status icons. Phone notification settings affect notifications from apps; the available documentation does not show those settings changing the Android Auto status area itself.
How to change message notification behavior
Android phone settings can control whether an app sends notifications and, on some devices, how specific notification categories behave. Labels and available options vary by phone maker and Android version. To review message alerts:

- On your phone, open Settings and go to Notifications. Find the messaging app and check that its notifications are allowed.
- If the phone offers notification categories, open the category for incoming messages. Check whether it is set to alert or silent, and look for a banner or Pop on screen option if you want an on-screen alert. Google notes that pop-on-screen behavior is available for alerting notifications on supported Android interfaces. See Google’s Android notification guide.
- Review Driving mode and Do Not Disturb if alerts seem filtered while driving. Their available settings and paths depend on the Android version; Google’s guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb explains these interruption controls.
- If the menus differ, use Settings search for “Notifications,” “Driving” or “Do Not Disturb,” or check the phone maker’s instructions.
These phone settings can change app notifications, but they are not documented as controls for customizing Android Auto’s status icons.
Why the notification number may appear without a message banner
First check whether the messaging app’s notifications are enabled and whether incoming messages are allowed to alert rather than remain silent. Then check for a banner or pop-on-screen setting and review any active driving mode or Do Not Disturb filters. The precise controls vary by phone and software version.
Some users in the Android Auto Community discussion about message notifications report that enabling the messaging app’s “Pop on screen” option restored banners. That is an anecdotal troubleshooting lead, not a guaranteed fix; behavior can differ by device, app and software version.

Android Auto can show incoming message notifications on the car display. Google’s guide to sending and receiving messages explains how to hear messages using voice control or follow the available screen flow. Missed or dismissed messages may also be available in tiles or the notification center, so a message that did not appear as a banner is not necessarily gone.

The available Google documentation does not establish an Android Auto setting to hide or rearrange individual status icons, or a universal Android Auto control for hiding message previews. Phone notification settings may let you control app alerts or message previews, but the exact options depend on the phone and messaging app. Check those settings for the specific behavior you want rather than assuming they alter the car’s status area.
