First decide whether you want a new look or a new shell

Readers sometimes call adhesive coverings “e-reader skins,” but that informal label does not establish that every film is suitable for every device finish. A fitted case or sleep cover is another removable way to change the device’s appearance; match it to the precise model and avoid a fit that presses on the screen.

If you are applying a skin or decal
- Identify the exact e-reader. Check the model name and generation in the device settings, documentation, or manufacturer support information. Do not choose a covering solely because it fits a product family name.
- Check the cutouts against your device. Confirm that the covering leaves buttons, ports, seams, and any other openings unobstructed. Do not stretch or force a mismatched decal into place.
- Keep it on the exterior back surface. Do not extend it across the screen, buttons, ports, vents, or panel seams. A covering over an opening or seam can interfere with use or complicate later service.
- Follow the maker’s application and removal directions. Adhesive compatibility and clean removal are not verified for any particular listing here. If those properties matter, seek explicit product information for your exact device and finish rather than assuming all skins behave alike.
If you mean replacing the actual back panel
Do not begin by prying at the seam. First identify the complete model and variant, then find a repair procedure and replacement part that name that exact version. Stop if you cannot confirm a reliable match; a similar-looking e-reader may use different clips or internal parts.
Example: Kobo Libra Colour N428B
The iFixit Kobo Libra Colour (N428B) Back Cover Replacement guide applies to N428B and warns that N428 is a different version. Its procedure uses a pick to release perimeter clips and recommends reviewing warranty information first. Those steps are specific to N428B; do not apply them to N428 or another Kobo by analogy.

Example: Kindle Oasis, 8th Generation
iFixit’s Kindle Oasis 8th Gen Back Panel Replacement guide, last updated June 13, 2022, describes using a plastic opening tool to free the back-panel clips. It is for that 8th-generation Oasis, not newer Kindles.
Check repair support and warranty terms before opening the device
Kobo’s US store FAQ lists front and back covers among repairable components for the Libra Colour, Clara Colour, and Clara BW, and says Kobo authorizes only the component repairs it lists. Its Kobo Repair Hub provides guides, parts, and tools. Coverage and availability can vary by region and should be checked for your device; this support information does not establish repair support for every Kobo or other e-reader.

Review the warranty and support terms that apply to your exact product and region before opening it. Amazon’s Kindle device warranty information, updated October 1, 2026, lists one-year limited warranty coverage for the devices and accessories shown on that page. That does not establish a universal consequence for every skin, repair, product, or region, so check the terms that actually cover yours.
When to stop
- You cannot confirm the full model or variant.
- The repair guide names a different version or device.
- You cannot verify a compatible replacement part or documented procedure.
- You are unsure whether opening the device affects the support terms that apply to it.
In those cases, leave the shell installed and use a model-matched exterior covering or case if your goal is appearance. If the back is damaged, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair option rather than treating a cosmetic guide as a repair manual.
