To keep a website’s header and hero section together in a thumbnail, first match the crop to the card’s final shape, then capture a browser viewport that includes both sections or crop a specific element or region. Resize proportionally and inspect the image at its actual display size: a full-page screenshot shrunk to a small card can make both areas difficult to recognize.
Choose the thumbnail shape before capturing
Start with the destination’s required aspect ratio and pixel dimensions, such as those specified by the card, feed, or publishing system where the thumbnail will appear. There is no single aspect ratio or pixel size that works for every destination. The crop must preserve enough vertical space for the header and hero while fitting that destination.

Decide what the thumbnail must communicate: usually the site identity in the header and the main message or visual in the hero. If both cannot fit in the destination shape, adjust the composition or choose a different destination size rather than stretching the screenshot.

1. Set a useful browser viewport
Capture the page at a width and height that produce the layout you want. Viewport dimensions can affect responsive page layout, so a narrow capture may show a mobile header while a wider one may show desktop navigation. The capture-website project documents width and height settings.

Before capturing, check that the viewport’s visible area contains the header and the portion of the hero that matters. If the hero begins below the fold, increase viewport height or choose a more targeted capture method.
2. Choose viewport, element, or region capture
- Viewport capture: Use it when the browser view already includes the header and hero together. It is straightforward, but the viewport may include unwanted space or omit lower hero content.
- Element capture: Select a page element when the desired composition corresponds to a stable element, such as a hero container that also includes the header. OpenGraph.io documents selector-based capture, along with dimensions and full-page capture, in its Screenshot API documentation. Check the page structure first: selecting only the hero will exclude a separate header.
- Coordinate-region capture: Define a specific rectangle when you know where the header and hero sit in the rendered page. In capture-website, the clip uses x/y coordinates and width/height; its documentation says clip cannot be combined with element or fullPage.
- Full-page capture followed by cropping: Use this when you need a page record or cannot target the desired area directly. A full-page image is usually much taller than a thumbnail, so crop it afterward to the destination shape.
3. Place the crop deliberately
Anchor the crop toward the top when the header is essential, but make sure the retained area still includes enough of the hero to identify it. If top anchoring cuts off the hero, use an explicit region or adjust the crop dimensions. Shopify’s CropRegion documentation identifies TOP, BOTTOM, CENTER, LEFT, RIGHT, and REGION options; REGION specifies coordinates and dimensions.

4. Resize without stretching
Scale the crop to the required output dimensions while retaining its proportions. If the thumbnail’s shape differs from the source, crop excess area rather than deforming the page. View the finished thumbnail at the size readers will see, not only at full resolution. Confirm that the site identity remains legible and the hero is still recognizable. If either is lost, revise the crop or viewport and capture again. There is no source-backed universal pixel threshold for readability; the destination and page determine the appropriate result.

Common problems and fixes
- The header is visible but the hero is missing: Increase viewport height or move the crop’s lower edge down. Confirm that the chosen element contains both areas if using selector capture.
- The hero is visible but navigation or branding is cut off: Move the crop upward or define a region that starts at the top of the page.
- The result looks squeezed: Do not force the image into a mismatched width and height. Crop to the destination ratio, then resize while preserving proportions.
- A selector capture returns only the hero: The header may be a separate element. Capture a containing element if available, use the viewport, or define a region spanning both.
- A clip option conflicts with another capture mode: In capture-website, do not combine clip with element or fullPage; choose the single mode that fits the composition.
- The thumbnail is too tall or unreadable when reduced: Avoid using the unmodified full-page image as the card image. Crop to the final shape and inspect it at display size.
