Nano Banana 2 is Google’s name for Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. The right composition and dimensions depend on where your WordPress theme displays the image—not on one universal featured-image size.
Choose the image’s destination before you prompt
First identify where the image will appear: a post header, an archive card, a Featured Image block, or more than one of these. If you can, inspect the actual display area and its shape on your site. WordPress themes determine which featured-image sizes are available and may register custom dimensions and crop behavior, so your site’s rendered layout is the practical guide to framing. Give the image room around its important subject. A centered subject with space near the edges is more likely to survive different crops than a face, product, or key detail placed at the extreme edge. That is a composition precaution, not a promise that every template will preserve the same framing.

Generate an image in Gemini Apps
- Open Gemini Apps and start an image-generation request.
- Describe the article topic, the main subject, the background, and the visual style. Ask for a composition suited to the placement you identified; for a wide layout, you can request a landscape 16:9 composition.
- Review the result for framing and suitability. Refine the request if the subject is too close to an edge or the composition does not fit the intended use.
- Download the image when you are satisfied with it. Available access and download options can vary by account, location, and plan.
Google recommends considering composition, style, image quality, and aspect ratio when creating images in Gemini Apps. A prompt can guide those choices, but it cannot guarantee an exact output crop or how a WordPress theme will render the image.

Example prompt
Use this as a starting point and replace the bracketed details: “Create a [style] featured image for an article about [topic]. Show [main subject] against [background]. Use a clean, readable composition with the important subject near the center and generous safe space around the edges for responsive crops. Landscape 16:9 composition. No text, logos, or watermark.”
Upload the image and assign it as the Featured Image
- In WordPress, upload the downloaded file to the Media Library. WordPress also documents adding images through the editor. See WordPress’s guide to using images.
- Open the post in the editor and select the image in the Featured Image control, then save or update the post.
- Check the post and any archive or card view where the image appears. The precise editor controls depend on your WordPress setup and theme.
Featured images can represent posts, pages, or custom post types. The option is available only when the active theme supports featured images; WordPress’s developer guide describes that theme support.

Check the crop in the actual layout
Do not judge the result only from the uploaded original. WordPress can create resized image variants, while themes can request their own sizes and crop behavior. The Featured Image block documentation also notes that its aspect ratio may be set by the theme.
- Look at the post header and at archive cards or other places that reuse the featured image.
- Check whether the key subject remains visible at each size.
- If the crop cuts off something important, revise the source composition or adjust the relevant theme or block settings, then preview again.
Why there is no single correct WordPress image size
There is no universally correct pixel width and height for every WordPress featured image. WordPress provides configurable image sizes, and themes may register custom featured-image dimensions. The Media Settings documentation describes adjustable thumbnail, medium, and large dimensions; even the thumbnail crop can be changed by the site administrator.

Use 16:9 only when it suits the intended composition or display area. It is an aspect-ratio option documented for Nano Banana 2, not a WordPress-wide featured-image requirement. For a manual workflow, inspect your theme, create a crop-tolerant composition, assign the image, and preview it in context.
When to use Gemini Apps versus the API
For a one-off post image, Gemini Apps provides the user-facing route to request, review, and download an image. You do not need the developer API just to create and assign an image manually. Google’s separate Gemini API image-generation documentation covers programmatic image output and model configuration, which is relevant when building an automated workflow. Check the current API documentation for parameters before implementing one; API settings are not WordPress editor settings.

Check permissions before publishing
Google’s Gemini Apps guidance says its Terms of Service and Prohibited Use Policy apply and advises care with copyright and privacy rights. Check that you have permission to use any uploaded reference images and that the finished image is suitable for your intended publication. Generated output should not be treated as automatically cleared for every use.
