They are not interchangeable forms of “cash.” A bank deposit is a claim on a bank that may qualify for FDIC insurance; a money market mutual fund share is an investment, not an insured deposit; and a stablecoin is a digital asset whose market value and redemption depend on its issuer, reserves, and transfer or trading arrangements. Compare the specific product’s protection, net return, redemption terms, and operational dependencies—not just its dollar target or advertised yield.
How the three options compare
This comparison is framed for U.S. users. Eligibility, legal rights, and protections can differ by product and jurisdiction.

| Question | Bank deposit | Money market mutual fund | Stablecoin |
|---|---|---|---|
| What do you own? | A deposit claim against a bank. | Shares in a mutual fund that holds short-term investments. | A digital token designed to track a reference value, such as the U.S. dollar. |
| What protection applies? | Eligible deposits at an insured bank may receive FDIC coverage, subject to legal limits, ownership category, depositor, and institution. | Not FDIC-insured. A fund’s investments do not turn its shares into bank deposits. The New York Fed distinguishes money market funds from bank money market deposit accounts. | Not backed by deposit insurance. Reserves are not the same as deposit insurance; the holder’s rights depend on the issuer and applicable terms. |
| What supports its value? | The bank’s obligation to repay the deposit, with any applicable deposit insurance. | The fund’s portfolio, which may include short-term government securities, certificates of deposit, or commercial paper. | Reserve assets, market demand, and the issuer’s redemption arrangements; composition and terms vary by token. |
| How does it produce a return? | Any interest is set by the bank and may vary by account. | Investment income is reflected in the fund’s yield, less applicable fees. | A token itself does not establish a holder’s yield. A platform reward or other return depends on its specific arrangement. |
| What can affect access? | Account rules and the bank’s payment and withdrawal services. | Fund, share-class, and brokerage terms, including applicable liquidity rules. | Issuer redemption terms, exchange or custodian access, blockchain operation, and any transfer or trading intermediary. |
What does “safer” mean for cash?
Safety is not one scale. Separate the chance of losing value from the chance of delayed access, and both from the possibility that the service you rely on is unavailable. A product can be convenient or have a low-volatility portfolio without carrying the same legal protection as an insured deposit.

If a nonbank app is involved, do not assume that seeing a balance in the app means the app itself is a bank or that insurance automatically applies to every customer balance.
- Protection against investment or market loss: A fund share is an investment even when its portfolio is short-term and designed for stability. A stablecoin’s dollar target is also not a guarantee that it will trade at one dollar or be redeemable by every holder at that price.
- Protection against access failure: Identify every party and system needed to withdraw or transfer the money. Brokerage processes, issuer procedures, exchanges, custodians, and blockchains can introduce different delays or outages.
What the evidence says about stress and stability
Stablecoin reserves and redemption risk
Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr said in an October 16, 2025 speech: “Because stablecoins are not backed by deposit insurance and stablecoin issuers do not have access to central bank liquidity, the quality and liquidity of their reserve assets is critical to their long-run viability.” Read Barr’s speech.
#1 Best Overall
A stablecoin may aim to hold a dollar value, but that target alone says little about what a particular holder can redeem, from whom, at what time, or for what fee. Review the token’s legal terms, redemption eligibility, minimums, limits, timing, and fees. Reserve disclosures also matter: check their date, detail, and whether they are independently examined rather than assuming that the label “stablecoin” means every token is backed in the same way.
What one New York Fed study found
A New York Fed staff report, revised in April 2024, found flows from riskier stablecoins toward safer stablecoins on crypto-stress days. It also estimated a break-the-buck threshold at $1, below which redemptions accelerate. These are findings from that study, not a rule that predicts the behavior of every token or market episode. Money market funds are not the same as deposits
A short-term portfolio does not eliminate fund-share risks or make the shares FDIC-insured. Check the actual fund and share class, portfolio, fees, liquidity rules, and the brokerage through which you access it; do not infer terms from the phrase “money market.”
The Federal Reserve reported that total U.S. money market fund assets rose to $7.1 trillion in July 2025 from $6.3 trillion in July 2024, likely because funds continued to offer more attractive yields than most bank deposits. This is a historical, aggregate observation—not a current yield comparison for an individual fund or bank account. See the Federal Reserve’s November 2025 Financial Stability Report.

How to compare the actual products
Use dated disclosures for the exact account, fund, token, or platform you are considering. Rates, terms, and access arrangements can change, and a category-level comparison cannot establish the return or eligibility of a particular product.
- Identify the legal claim. Find out whether you are a bank depositor, a fund shareholder, or a token holder. For an app or brokerage balance, identify the actual bank, fund, issuer, or custodian holding or owing the value.
- Verify the protection and conditions. For a deposit, check the bank and account ownership structure rather than relying on the app’s branding. For a fund, read the prospectus and brokerage terms. For a token, read the issuer’s terms and determine who may redeem directly.
- Compare like-for-like returns. Record the date, yield measure, fees, minimum balance, and restrictions. For a bank, use the account’s current APY and note whether it is variable or promotional. For a fund, use the current yield measure shown for the exact share class and account for expenses. For a stablecoin-related reward, determine who pays it and whether it depends on a platform, lending, staking, or another activity; do not treat it as issuer-paid interest unless the terms establish that.
- Trace the exit route. Write down how to withdraw or redeem, how long it normally takes under the stated terms, any cutoff or business-hour limits, minimums, caps, and fees. For tokens, distinguish a transfer to another wallet from redemption with the issuer or sale through an exchange; they are not necessarily the same route.
- Check dependencies and disruption plans. Note which bank, broker, exchange, custodian, issuer, and—in the case of a token—blockchain must be functioning. Ask what alternative access exists if a service is unavailable or a transfer is delayed.
Which option fits the purpose?
For insured operating cash
If the priority is routine bill payment and deposit insurance, start with an eligible bank deposit and verify the institution and ownership arrangement. The actual account’s payment features, withdrawal rules, and variable rate still matter.
Rank #4
For short-term investment exposure
A money market mutual fund may suit cash managed through a brokerage when you understand that you own fund shares, not an insured bank balance. Judge the specific portfolio, share class, fees, and access terms rather than treating all funds as identical.
For digital settlement or transfers
A stablecoin may serve a digital transfer or on-chain settlement purpose, but that utility comes with issuer, reserve, market, custody, and network dependencies. It is not automatically a substitute for insured savings just because it targets a dollar value.
Best Value
The Federal Reserve’s November 2025 report said stablecoin assets had grown by more than 70 percent over the preceding 12 months and noted a mid-October 2025 all-time high. That market growth is context, not evidence that a specific token is safe, redeemable on demand, or suitable for cash savings. The report discusses stablecoins alongside funding risks.
