A full-page screenshot only captures what the browser has rendered; it does not reliably trigger every page’s scroll-dependent loading. Scroll in controlled steps, wait for a page-specific signal that the desired content is ready, and then capture and inspect the result.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss content
Infinite-scroll pages often fetch or render more items as a target approaches the viewport. One way sites do this is with the Intersection Observer API, which can observe when a target intersects the viewport or a scrollable ancestor. Some pages use other mechanisms, so the trigger depends on the site.

Lazy-loaded images create a related problem: the browser may not fetch an offscreen image until it is needed. The window load event is therefore not proof that all deferred content or images are ready. A full-page capture option expands the screenshot to the page’s current scrollable extent; it does not guarantee that scrolling-dependent content has been loaded.
Choose the capture approach

These are workflow trade-offs, not guarantees about how a particular site behaves. Check whether the page uses a nested scroll container and whether items remain in the document after they leave view.

Automate scrolling and capture with Playwright
Playwright’s page screenshot API supports fullPage, which captures the full scrollable page. The key is to scroll before capturing and wait for a condition tied to the page’s content, rather than assuming a single delay works everywhere. The example below assumes the page exposes a feed selector and a stable item selector; replace them with selectors and completion logic that match the target site.
- Install Playwright and a browser: run
npm install playwrightandnpx playwright install chromiumin your project. - Save the script as
thumbnail.mjs: replace the URL, selectors, and target count with values for the page. - Run it: use
node thumbnail.mjs. The script scrolls the feed in increments, waits for item-count changes, and saves a full-page PNG after it reaches the requested count or stops making progress.

If the site provides a loading indicator, end marker, or application state that identifies when more results are ready, wait for that instead. For a nested feed, make sure you scroll the element that actually owns the scroll position.

Wait for the images you need
The script waits for load or error events on images currently in the document. That is useful as a basic guard, but it does not prove that every desired image was fetched successfully, nor can it wait for an image that has not yet been added to the DOM. For stricter checks, identify the expected images and verify their naturalWidth is greater than zero before capturing. If scrolling changes the layout or introduces more items, perform the readiness check after the final loading step.

Make the thumbnail repeatable and useful
- Set a fixed viewport: keep the viewport and browser configuration consistent when thumbnail dimensions need to match across runs.
- Bound the amount of content: choose a target item count, stopping marker, or maximum scroll rounds. Infinite feeds may never reach a natural end.
- Plan for virtualized content: some feeds remove offscreen items from the document. A full-page screenshot may then include only the currently rendered portion; capture sections or use the page’s own data or rendering behavior instead.
- Check the output dimensions and crop: an image showing an entire long feed may be too tall or too small to read at thumbnail size. Capture the relevant viewport or sections if the thumbnail has a defined display size.
- Inspect the bottom and representative images: verify the last intended item and a few images actually appear. A screenshot is a visual snapshot, not proof that the full dataset was fetched.
Common problems and fixes
