Capture a real Shopify storefront or faithful design preview, crop it to the size your portfolio actually displays, and use the same aspect ratio across comparable project cards. A 1920 × 1080-pixel (16:9) canvas is a practical starting point, not a universal portfolio standard. Pair each image with a project title and a short case study explaining your role and the work.
Choose a representative view of the store
Start with a live Shopify page or a faithful design preview that shows the store’s visual identity and layout at a glance. A homepage is a natural choice when it best represents the project; a product or collection page may be more useful when that is where the design work is most apparent. Select a view that is legible when reduced to the size of a portfolio card.

Use a screenshot or an image exported from your design tool—not a photograph of a screen. Canva’s portfolio guidance advises capturing and polishing digital work with a screenshot editor rather than photographing a monitor: Canva portfolio guidance.

Capture the live store or export your design
For a live storefront
Open the page at the viewport you want to represent and capture it digitally. If desktop and mobile layouts differ meaningfully, decide whether the card should show one view or a deliberate composition of both. Avoid shrinking a long full-page screenshot into a small card: the details become difficult to read. Instead, choose a representative viewport or make a separate mobile image for the case study.

For a design preview
Export a frame from your design file that reflects the intended page, rather than using an unrelated decorative image. Figma recommends a 1920 × 1080-pixel frame for file thumbnails, and its file-thumbnail guidance explains how to set a thumbnail: Design a file thumbnail and Set custom thumbnails for files.
Compose and crop for your portfolio grid
First check the dimensions or aspect ratio used by the portfolio card. Create the image at that ratio, then crop the screenshot to keep the important visual elements inside the frame. Figma’s 1920 × 1080 recommendation is a useful 16:9 canvas when you need a starting point; it is not a required size for every portfolio platform.

- Keep similar project cards at a consistent ratio and crop so the portfolio grid looks deliberate.
- Check the crop at the actual displayed size. Make sure the store’s identity and layout remain recognizable.
- Use a plain screenshot when fidelity is the priority. A restrained mockup can show device context, but should not conceal or misrepresent the work.
- If you show desktop and mobile together, keep the screenshot content large enough to remain legible.
Shopify notes that consistent aspect ratios help images display uniformly in collection contexts. That is general platform guidance, not a mandatory rule for portfolio cards: Shopify product media guidance.
Export an image suitable for where it will appear
Use an image format supported by your portfolio and export at a resolution appropriate to its displayed size. If you are publishing the portfolio through a Shopify theme, responsive image delivery can serve appropriately sized files at different viewport widths. Shopify Developers documents using srcset and sizes with the Liquid image_tag filter: Serve correctly sized images with srcset and sizes.

Keep the image rules for its actual use in mind. Shopify’s limits of up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels and below 20 MB are guidance for product and collection images; do not assume those limits apply identically to every image or hosting context: Shopify product media types. Shopify’s product-photography guidance suggests aiming for about 200 KB or less when optimizing website images, while warning against compression that creates blotchy details. This is advice, not a mandatory portfolio-thumbnail limit: Taking product photographs. For theme images, Shopify says images are optimized through its CDN, recommends uploading the best-quality source rather than manually compressing it first, and notes that delivery format can be selected according to browser support: Shopify theme image guidance.
Give the thumbnail a useful case-study destination
A thumbnail introduces the project; the accompanying page should explain it. Include the project name, your role, the brief or problem, and a concise account of what you designed or built. Shopify India’s portfolio guidance recommends relevant work samples and case studies, and suggests interactive prototypes where possible. Personal or educational projects can help new designers show their work: Shopify India’s UX portfolio guide.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a storefront with one GET request. Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Is there a special thumbnail size required for a Shopify portfolio in India?
The reviewed guidance does not establish an India-specific thumbnail dimension. Use the aspect ratio required by your portfolio layout; 1920 × 1080 pixels is a Figma file-thumbnail recommendation, not a universal portfolio rule.

Should I use a screenshot or a mockup?
A screenshot most directly represents the actual site. A restrained mockup can add device context if it does not obscure or misrepresent the design.
