First decide where the thumbnail needs to appear: in a card or link list on your blog, in a preview when someone shares a URL, or both. The blog’s theme controls its own cards; shared-link previews rely on Open Graph metadata and the destination platform’s crawler. A featured image may serve both purposes, but neither every theme nor every platform is guaranteed to use it.
Choose which thumbnail you mean
- On your blog: This is the image shown beside a post in an archive, homepage, or link page. The theme or page layout decides whether it appears and how it is cropped.
- In a shared-link preview: This is the image shown when someone shares the page URL in a social network or messaging app. The page’s Open Graph tags and that service’s crawler influence the result.
- In both places: You may be able to assign one featured image, but inspect the actual card and shared preview separately. They can use different crops or image sources.
Exact menu instructions depend on your CMS and the destination service. The steps below use WordPress where its behavior is documented; other platforms may name or expose these controls differently.

Create an image that works at small sizes
Design for Hindi text and cropping
Use a repeatable design: a short topic label, restrained branding, and strong contrast. Preview the artwork at the small size where readers will encounter it. Check that the Devanagari characters render correctly in the chosen font and remain legible when reduced. Keep essential text and logos near the center, since cards and social services may crop the edges differently.

For general social sharing, WordPress.com recommends an image of 1200 × 630 pixels, close to a 1.91:1 ratio, in JPG or PNG format and under 5 MB. These are WordPress.com recommendations, not a guarantee for every network or layout. See WordPress.com’s social-preview guidance.
#1 Best Overall
Its Facebook-specific guidance gives different thresholds: a minimum of 200 × 200 pixels, at least 600 × 315 pixels for larger images, at least 1200 × 630 pixels for high-resolution displays, a maximum file size of 8 MB, and a ratio close to 1.91:1. Do not treat these Facebook figures as universal requirements for other services. See WordPress.com’s Facebook image guidance.
Set the thumbnail shown on your blog
Assign a featured image in WordPress
Open the post or page in your WordPress editor and set its featured image using the editor’s Featured image control. The exact editor layout can vary. Then check the published archive or link page: the theme must support featured images and its layout must actually render one.
WordPress documents featured images as representations of posts, pages, and custom post types that themes can display in places such as archives, headers, or above a post. For classic themes, support must be declared with add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ); without theme support, the featured-image control may not appear. Theme developers can register image sizes with add_image_size(), and use set_post_thumbnail_size() to choose proportional resizing or cropping. See the WordPress Theme Handbook.

Understand WordPress image sizes
The handbook lists these documented defaults. Site media settings and theme code can change the output, so check the actual image and crop on your site.
| WordPress size | Documented default | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| thumbnail | 150 px maximum | Whether the theme crops this size to fit its card |
| medium | 300 px maximum | Whether the displayed dimensions suit the layout |
| medium_large | 768 px width, no height limit | Whether the card requests this size or another one |
| large | 1024 × 1024 px maximum | Whether the theme scales or crops it for the card |
A square thumbnail in a blog archive can look very different from a landscape social-preview image. If one source image must serve both, make a test post and inspect both outputs before applying the design to every post.
Set the image used in shared-link previews
Check Open Graph metadata
For a shared URL preview, check the published page’s HTML for Open Graph properties. The protocol identifies og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url as required properties for a page object. og:image supplies the image URL; the protocol says a page that specifies it should also specify og:image:alt. It also defines optional image details such as width, height, MIME type, and secure URL. See the Open Graph protocol.
WordPress.com says it adds og:title, og:description, and og:image to posts and pages automatically, and uses the featured image first when selecting a page’s social preview. That behavior describes WordPress.com; a self-hosted WordPress installation, another CMS, or a plugin may behave differently. Verify the metadata on the published page rather than assuming the featured image was used.

Review the URL in the sharing service where readers will see it. WordPress.com describes a Jetpack preview for multiple networks and directs users to Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector. If Facebook still displays an older image, WordPress.com’s support page recommends using the Sharing Debugger’s “Scrape Again” action. Its support page notes that caches may otherwise take many days or weeks to update.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect thumbnail
- The card on your blog has no image: Confirm that the post has a featured image and that the theme or page layout supports and displays it. In a classic WordPress theme, check for post-thumbnail support.
- The card shows an unexpected crop: Inspect the theme’s selected image size and crop. A square card may require a different crop than a landscape social image; adjust the source or theme’s registered size as appropriate.
- A shared URL shows no image or the wrong one: Check the published page’s
og:imagevalue and confirm it points to the intended, accessible image. Do not assume the theme’s card image is also the social image. - Facebook shows an old image: Request a fresh scrape with Facebook’s Sharing Debugger. The cached preview may not change immediately.
- Hindi text looks broken or tiny: Preview the image at the actual card size, verify the chosen font renders Devanagari correctly, and shorten or enlarge text that loses legibility when reduced.
- The image is rejected or poorly displayed: Check the target service’s image dimensions, ratio, and file-size guidance. The WordPress.com general and Facebook recommendations differ, and neither should be assumed to govern every platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a different image for my blog card and a shared link?
Not necessarily. A featured image may be used for both, but the theme and destination service can apply different crops or select different images. Check both published results.
Does setting a featured image guarantee that it appears in a social preview?
No. It depends on the CMS’s metadata behavior and the destination platform’s crawler. Verify the published page’s Open Graph metadata and inspect the preview.
