How to Create Website Screenshot Reports for SEO Clients in India

A practical workflow for turning website screenshots and Google SEO evidence into a client-ready report, with clear labels, comparisons, next steps, and a screenshot API option.

Build an SEO screenshot report by pairing each relevant page image with a verified finding, its evidence source, the device and date, its likely impact, and a specific next action. A screenshot is visual context—not proof of an SEO problem or a ranking outcome. For India-focused clients, use the client’s actual target market and audience context; do not treat a screenshot or a lab score as a measure of how every visitor in India experiences the page.

Decide what the report needs to prove

Before taking screenshots, agree what the client should be able to decide after reading the report. A one-time diagnostic and a recurring progress report need different evidence: the first explains the current state; the second also needs comparable captures and measurements across reporting periods.

Record the client and site, audit date and reporting period, pages or templates in scope, target country or market context supplied by the client, and whether you are evaluating mobile, desktop, or both. Specify whether each image shows a visitor-facing browser view, a Search Console inspection view, or another tool’s output. Do not imply a regional ranking result from a screenshot alone.

Capture the visitor-facing page

Open the exact URL in a normal browser and capture the portion of the page that illustrates the finding. Use a full-page capture when the relevant content is below the fold or when the report needs to show the page’s overall structure. Keep the page identity visible where practical, and name each file so it can be matched to its URL, device context, and capture date.

  1. Choose the page and state. Record the exact URL and note whether the issue appears on a landing page, product page, article, or another template. If a consent prompt, popup, or other overlay is part of the issue, capture the relevant state rather than silently removing it.
  2. Choose the viewport. Capture mobile and desktop separately when the issue or client question differs by device. Record the viewport or device context; do not compare a mobile image with a desktop image as if they were equivalent.
  3. Capture and label the image. Use the browser or operating system’s ordinary screenshot method, then save the image with a descriptive filename. A useful pattern is client-page-device-YYYY-MM-DD.png.
  4. For before-and-after comparisons, control the conditions. Keep the URL, viewport, browser state, and capture method comparable, and note what changed between images.

Use a caption such as “Mobile page view, captured [date], [URL].” A screenshot shows what was visible in that capture; it does not by itself establish why a search or performance outcome occurred.

Show Google’s inspection view when it answers the question

For a page-specific question about how Google’s inspection tool retrieved or rendered a URL, use Search Console’s URL Inspection. Inspect the full URL. The default inspection view reports information from Google’s index; if that does not answer the question, select Test Live URL. For a successful live test, open View tested page to inspect the rendering and screenshot. Google says the screenshot is available only for a successful live test and represents the page retrieved by Google-InspectionTool—not a generic image of every Googlebot visit. See Google’s instructions for inspecting and troubleshooting a single page and its URL Inspection tool documentation.

Use that view to illustrate a specific rendering question, such as a missing element or a resource that appears blocked. URL Inspection can also report crawl allowance, fetch status, indexing allowance, and Google-selected canonical information. Label the image “Search Console URL Inspection live-test render, tested [date], [URL].” Keep the live-test result separate from indexed information: Google says the live test is generated on demand, is less comprehensive, and its data is not used by Google itself. A positive inspection verdict is not a ranking guarantee; Google explicitly says that “‘URL is on Google’ doesn’t guarantee that your page is appearing in Search results.”

Pair screenshots with evidence that supports an action

Choose the tool that answers the client’s question, and identify the source in the report. Do not paste a wall of scores: explain the finding, why it matters, and what should happen next.

  • Search Console URL Inspection: Use it for a specific URL’s indexed information or the live-test rendering and inspection details.
  • Search Console Page indexing report: Use it to identify patterns among known URLs, rather than treating one page capture as evidence of a sitewide issue. Investigate why a URL is not indexed before calling it a defect: Google notes that some URLs, such as duplicates or pages blocked by a noindex directive, may appropriately remain out of the index. See the Page indexing report documentation.
  • PageSpeed Insights (PSI): Use it for page-level mobile and desktop performance information and recommendations. Google says PSI combines Lighthouse lab diagnostics with Chrome UX Report (CrUX) field information where field data is available. See About PageSpeed Insights.
  • Lighthouse: Use its audits for performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO diagnostics. State that a result is a lab diagnostic, not a field measurement. See the Lighthouse project documentation.
  • Search Console Core Web Vitals report: Use it to understand groups of similar URLs and site-level troubleshooting, not to claim the status of one exact URL. Its group metrics represent the 75th percentile over the preceding 28 days, so a PSI result for one page may not match the broader group result. See Google’s Core Web Vitals report documentation.

Keep device, location, and measurement types clear

PSI assesses both mobile and desktop. Its lab results come from simulated conditions; field data reflects real users on varied devices and networks, so the two can differ. State whether each reported value is lab or field evidence. PSI runs its test in a Google datacenter that can vary among North America, Europe, or Asia; the report’s environment block identifies the location. Do not present that datacenter as the client’s visitor location or claim that a lab score alone represents Indian visitors.

When quoting PSI’s Lighthouse category score bands, label them as lab categories: 90 or above is good, 50–89 needs improvement, and below 50 is poor. These bands are not expected search rankings. The thresholds are documented on Google’s PageSpeed Insights page; its publication or update year is not stated there.

Compare pages and results on equal terms

When comparing two pages, devices, or reporting periods, disclose the context beside the evidence. A score or screenshot without these details can make an apples-to-oranges comparison look conclusive.

Comparison detail What to record
Page scope Exact URL or representative URL group; identify the template if relevant.
Device Mobile or desktop, plus viewport or device context for screenshots.
Evidence source Visitor-facing browser capture, URL Inspection indexed view, URL Inspection live test, Lighthouse lab output, or CrUX/Search Console field data.
Date and time When the screenshot or test was captured, and whether implementation changes happened afterward.
Metric type Diagnostic score, individual performance metric, indexing status, or field-data assessment.
Next step Issue severity, affected page or template, likely user impact, owner, and next validation step.

Assemble the client-facing report

Keep the main report short enough to scan, with supporting evidence available in the findings or appendix. A practical order is:

  1. Context: Client and site, scope, audit date or reporting period, pages reviewed, device coverage, and definitions for evidence labels.
  2. Executive summary: The few findings that deserve action first, stated in plain language.
  3. Findings: One issue per row or section, with its screenshot, source, observation, likely impact, priority, and next action.
  4. Evidence appendix: Relevant inspection, PSI, or Lighthouse outputs and links, each labelled with its source, device context, URL, and date.
  5. Follow-up: Fix owner, target date, and how and when the result will be checked again.

For each finding, separate what you observed from what you infer. For example: “On the mobile capture, the primary call-to-action is obscured by the consent panel” is an observation. Any claim about how that affects search performance needs separate evidence; a screenshot alone cannot establish it. Make the next step specific enough that the client can assign it.

Or skip the browser setup

For repeatable screenshot capture by API, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The example below saves the response as a WebP image; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These are ScreenshotNeo’s stated plan allowances and prices; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Troubleshoot reporting mistakes

  • The screenshot does not show the issue: Confirm the exact URL, page state, viewport, and whether the relevant content is below the fold. Capture the relevant full-page view if needed, and record any state that changes what is visible.
  • The report treats live-test data as indexed data: Label URL Inspection’s default index information and its on-demand live-test result separately. Use the view that addresses the client’s question.
  • A URL is called broken just because it is not indexed: Check the URL’s context and the Page indexing report. Duplicates and pages intentionally marked noindex may not belong in the index.
  • A PSI number conflicts with the Core Web Vitals report: Check whether one value is a page-level lab or field result and the other is an aggregated URL-group measure. Identify the measurement type and timeframe rather than presenting them as interchangeable.
  • A desktop screenshot is used to explain a mobile issue: Capture and label the relevant device context. Keep viewport and page state comparable for before-and-after images.
  • A screenshot is used to claim rankings or regional visibility: Remove that conclusion unless separate evidence supports it. A capture documents a view, and an inspection verdict does not guarantee search-result appearance.
