Create a ribbon label by putting its words in ordinary HTML and styling its appearance with CSS. Keep the label meaningful and in a sensible reading order; use CSS for color, placement, rotation, and decorative folds. If the visual treatment is removed or unsupported, the label should still be readable.
Start with the label’s meaning
Write the text—such as “New,” “Sale,” or “Featured”—as real HTML content. Choose an element based on what the content does, not how you want it to look. A status or category label is usually non-interactive; if the ribbon is an action, use an appropriate interactive element instead.

Semantic HTML gives browsers and assistive technologies useful information, and a logical source order helps people understand the page. MDN’s guidance on HTML as a basis for accessibility explains why the correct elements matter. Do not make the label’s only text a CSS-generated pseudo-element, or communicate its status through color alone.

Choose a ribbon form that fits the layout

These are design choices, not measured rankings. Pick based on the component’s dimensions, the label’s length, and how much surrounding content the ribbon may cover.

Build the structure before adding decoration
A positioned parent and a child element for the label are enough for many overlays. This starting example keeps the words in the DOM and lets CSS handle placement and appearance:

}The positioning values are illustrative, not universal. An overlay can collide with a heading or control, so adjust placement for the actual card and its content. W3Schools shows one ribbon pattern using a span, absolute positioning, rotation, padding, and a background; treat such examples as demonstrations rather than standards: How To Create a Ribbon with CSS.
Add slants and folds as optional CSS
For a slanted badge, rotation and offsets can create the angled look. For a corner fold, clipping or pseudo-elements can supply the extra geometry. Keep those effects separate from the text so they can be adjusted or removed without losing the label.

CSS Shapes are a visual progressive enhancement: MDN notes that when a shape used for text flow is unsupported, the text falls back to rectangular flow. That behavior applies to the described CSS Shapes use, not automatically to every ribbon technique or property. Check support for the specific effect and browsers you target. - Confirm the label appears in a sensible reading order relative to the heading and other content.
- Try short and long label text, the actual card dimensions, narrow layouts, and responsive breakpoints.
- Zoom the page and check that the ribbon remains readable and does not cover important text or controls.
- Use sufficient contrast, and do not rely on color or shape alone to convey the label’s meaning.
- Consider how the component reads if decorative CSS is unavailable: its label should remain ordinary, visible text.
