Build an n8n workflow that reads Shopify products, follows every page of catalog results, creates thumbnails from each product’s source image, and stores or attaches the outputs as needed. For current media management, use Shopify’s GraphQL Admin API; Shopify says, “Use the GraphQL Admin API to manage media for products and collections.” The workflow does not require a physical product—only Shopify access and an image-transformation step suited to your output.
Choose how thumbnails should be delivered
Before building the workflow, decide whether you need a smaller display of an existing image or a separate generated image file. Shopify’s MediaImage object exposes processed image data and access to the original source file. Check whether Shopify’s processed image data meets the storefront’s needs before generating and uploading separate copies.

- Use processed Shopify media: appropriate when the storefront can use Shopify-hosted media and its processed image data.
- Create a separate thumbnail: use an image transformation step to produce a file with explicit dimensions, crop or fit behavior, and format. The correct values depend on the actual image slots in your theme; there is no universal thumbnail size established here.
- Decide where the result belongs: a file may be delivered elsewhere, or uploaded and associated with a product, variant, collection, or theme through Shopify’s media workflow.

Build the n8n workflow
1. Choose a trigger
For a one-time catalog backfill, start with a manual trigger. For ongoing updates, choose a schedule or a webhook-driven workflow appropriate to how your store’s changes are delivered. These are workflow design choices; choose one based on whether you need an initial batch or recurring processing.

2. Configure Shopify credentials
Connect Shopify in n8n and grant only the access required by the workflow. Reading product data differs from uploading or assigning media, so confirm the scopes needed for the specific GraphQL query and mutations you intend to use. n8n’s Shopify credentials documentation lists read_orders, write_orders, read_products, and write_products for full functionality of its Shopify node. Do not request the broadest set automatically if the workflow does not use all of it.
3. Retrieve products and their image references
Use n8n’s Shopify node when its product operations provide the fields you need. It includes product Get and Get Many operations. For custom fields or more direct control of catalog pagination, use a GraphQL or HTTP Request approach. The n8n Shopify integration documentation describes the integration options; verify operation labels against the n8n version you have installed.
For a custom GraphQL request, query the product identifiers and relevant media or image references required by your transformation step. Shopify’s products query supports cursor pagination. Do not assume one request returns the entire catalog.

4. Process every page
Continue requesting product pages until the response indicates there is no next page, passing the returned cursor into the next request. An n8n cursor-pagination workflow template illustrates a cursor loop. Its description noted that the GraphQL node did not natively fetch pages when the template was published; check the behavior of your installed node version rather than relying on that historical limitation or assuming pagination happens automatically.
5. Create the thumbnails
Pass each source image URL or binary to the image-transformation step you select. Set the width, height, crop or fit policy, and output format to match the storefront slot. The documentation covered here establishes Shopify media hosting and processing, but it does not identify a particular n8n thumbnail-generation node or prescribe dimensions. Choose a transformation tool that accepts your input form and produces an output your destination can store.
6. Store or associate the result
If you create and upload separate files or attach them to Shopify resources, use Shopify’s GraphQL media management workflow. A media upload may process asynchronously: the MediaImage object exposes processing status. Check for readiness before treating an uploaded file as complete or moving to a dependent assignment step.

7. Test before running the full catalog
Run a small sample first. Preserve original images, verify product and variant associations, inspect alt text and output dimensions, and decide how duplicate runs should behave. Expand to the full catalog only after the sample outputs and links are correct.

GraphQL and REST API considerations
For current product media work, use the GraphQL Admin API. Shopify’s REST Product Image documentation marks image listing, creation, updating, and deletion deprecated as of REST API version 2025-01. Shopify also says new public apps must use the GraphQL Admin API starting April 1, 2025. That statement is specifically about new public apps; it should not be broadened into a claim about every existing integration.
Use the scopes appropriate to the exact work: catalog reads, file uploads, and media assignment can require different permissions. Check Shopify’s media management guide and the requirements for the particular GraphQL operations before deploying.

Choose an update strategy
- Manual backfill: run once to process existing catalog items, then review results.
- Scheduled run: periodically check for products or images requiring processing; decide how the workflow identifies items already handled.
- Event-driven run: start processing when relevant product changes arrive through a webhook, then handle retries and duplicate events deliberately.
The sources do not establish one universally best trigger or image-delivery method. The right choice depends on how often the catalog changes and whether a separate image file is actually needed.

- Only some products are processed: check whether the workflow stops after the first GraphQL page. Follow the cursor until there is no next page.
- A product has no usable image reference: inspect the returned product media and confirm the selected field supplies a source or processed image suitable for the transformation step.
- An upload appears unfinished: check the media processing status and wait for readiness before using the file in a later step.
- Shopify rejects a query or mutation: confirm the credential has the scopes required for that operation, and ensure the request uses the GraphQL Admin API for current media management.
- The thumbnail looks cropped or too small: compare the transformation settings with the theme’s actual slot dimensions and crop behavior; change the width, height, or fit policy accordingly.
- Reruns create duplicates or overwrite unexpected files: define an idempotency rule before scaling up, such as checking whether the intended output already exists and verifying its product association.
- An n8n operation is missing: check the installed n8n version and current Shopify node documentation. The implementation labels can differ as the integration changes.
