On Squarespace 7.1, a portfolio thumbnail comes from each project’s featured image. Add or edit a project, set its title and featured image in the project’s General settings, publish it, then choose how projects appear on the portfolio landing page. Check the result on both desktop and mobile: Squarespace may crop an image to fit its responsive container. The steps below use the computer editor; the official guidance does not specify a separate India-only thumbnail workflow.
First, check your Squarespace version
These steps apply to portfolio pages in Squarespace 7.1. In Squarespace 7.0, portfolios use index pages and their appearance depends on the template, so the 7.1 project and styling controls may not match. Add a project and its thumbnail
- In the computer editor, open Pages and select your portfolio page.
- Add a project, or choose a blank project.
- Open the project’s General settings. Enter its title and add a featured image. This featured image is the representative thumbnail shown on the portfolio landing page.
- Save the project, then edit its page content. Add the sections and content needed for the full project page; these can include image blocks, gallery sections, and auto layouts.
- Publish the project when it is ready for visitors. New projects are drafts by default and are not visible to site visitors until published.

Choose how portfolio thumbnails appear
Edit the portfolio page’s section styles to select a presentation. The choice changes how visitors encounter each featured image and title.

For grid layouts, the documented controls include 2, 3, or 4 columns, image aspect ratio, width, height, spacing, text alignment or placement, and hover treatment. More columns make each thumbnail narrower when the section width stays the same, so check that important visual details and titles still read clearly. Hover layouts rely on visitors being able to reveal images; consider whether that suits the way your audience browses on touchscreens. Prevent awkward crops on mobile
Squarespace images adapt to screen size and can be cropped to fit their containers. A thumbnail that looks balanced on a wide desktop screen can lose an important subject or detail at a narrower mobile width.

- Choose a grid aspect ratio that suits the work: a landscape image, portrait, and square artwork may not frame well in the same shape.
- Preview the portfolio at desktop and mobile widths. Check that the subject, composition, and any meaningful text remain visible.
- Where the editor offers a crop or focal-point adjustment, reposition the image so the important area stays in frame.
- If the source file itself needs different dimensions or composition, edit it with image-editing software on your device and upload the revised file. Changing the portfolio container’s ratio is not the same as changing the source image.
Squarespace explains responsive image behavior in Add and resize images and documents common display issues in Troubleshooting cropping issues. Its reviewed guidance does not establish a single ideal pixel size or ratio for every portfolio thumbnail, so use the layout controls and check the actual result rather than relying on a universal dimension.
Use the computer editor for project setup
Squarespace’s portfolio guidance says new portfolio pages and project editing cannot be done in the Squarespace app. Some other site editing and page settings are available in the app, but availability is limited, and some SEO and social options require a computer.
