For most permanent in-wall Ethernet runs in a typical U.S. home, choose bulk Cat 6 cable with solid bare copper conductors and a jacket rating suited to the route. CMR riser-rated cable is a practical default where permitted; if the cable will pass through an air-handling plenum that requires plenum rating, use CMP instead. No single jacket rating is right for every pathway, so check local requirements and the cable’s printed markings before buying or pulling it.
What to buy for a typical in-wall run
Look for bulk Cat 6 Ethernet cable with solid bare copper conductors, then choose CMR or CMP based on the pathway. Bulk cable intended for permanent installation is different from a pre-terminated patch cable: do not assume that a product labeled only “Ethernet” is suitable for a concealed building run.

For a route that does not require plenum-rated cable, Cat 6 CMR bulk cable is a reasonable starting point. Prysmian’s GenSPEED 6000, for example, is specified as 23 AWG solid bare annealed copper with performance guaranteed to 350 MHz; those are specifications for that product, not requirements for every Cat 6 installation. See Prysmian’s GenSPEED 6000 product information.
Choose the jacket rating for the route
CMR and CMP describe different fire-performance ratings for communications cable pathways. They are not interchangeable labels, and the right choice depends on where the cable will run and on the rules adopted for your building.

- High-Performance Cat6 Cable: This UL Listed (E485863) Cat6 Ethernet cable bulk spool offers 23 AWG, CMR riser-rated construction, making it ideal for high-speed networking in homes and offices. Designed for 10-Gigabit Ethernet, it is backward compatible with Gigabit and Fast Ethernet for versatile connectivity.
- Riser-Rated Safety: The riser-rated (CMR) jacket provides superior fire resistance, making this ethernet cable spool suitable for installation between floors in residential or commercial buildings. Its safety rating offers peace of mind for professional network installations in multi-story environments.
- Future-Proof Network: Foot-marked Cat 6 spool allows for easy tracking of cable length. With a high bandwidth of up to 550 MHz, this cable supports demanding server applications, cloud computing, video surveillance, and smooth HD video streaming.
- Pure Copper Conductors: Crafted with bare copper conductors for enhanced cable performance, this Cat 6 bulk Ethernet cable meets or exceeds TIA/EIA 568-C.2 standards. Unlike copper-clad alternatives, the solid copper build ensures reliable data transfer, supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++), and complies with communication cable specifications.
- Convenient Easy-Pull Reel: The cable comes with an easy-pull reel for hassle-free deployment. This design simplifies installation and prevents tangling or damage, ensuring smooth handling during large-scale network projects.
| Rating | Intended pathway | Substitution guidance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| CMR | Riser pathways and other non-plenum pathways where permitted | Do not use CMR in a plenum, according to Eaton’s guidance | Confirm the pathway permits CMR and check the jacket marking and listing |
| CMP | Air-handling plenum pathways where required | Eaton says CMP can be used in a riser; local rules still apply | Confirm the pathway requirement and check the jacket marking and listing |
Eaton’s Ethernet cable guidance explains: “Because CMP cables have a higher fire resistance, you can use CMP in risers but you cannot use CMR cable in plenum spaces.” Treat this as general vendor guidance, not a substitute for the code requirements that apply at your address. Read Eaton’s Ethernet cable guidance.
The exact requirement for a particular building and pathway cannot be determined from the cable category alone. U.S. rules and local code adoption or building specifications may affect what is allowed. If you are unsure whether a route is a plenum or what rating it requires, ask a qualified electrician or the building official before installation.

- READY FOR A TRUE CABLE UPGRADE? It may seem like all Cat 6 ethernet cable 1000ft PoE++(4PPoE) is created equal, but most engineers agree the small, time saving details make all the difference – like rolling cable out of the box smoothly without snags, plastic core for durability and of course fulfilling its promise of being a high performance ethernet cable
- 100% CERTIFIED SOLID BARE COPPER CONDUCTOR: It’s time to forget Copper Clad Aluminum cables (CCA) – With a higher conductivity and tensile strength, fast Cat. 23AWG Solid Copper Conductors transmit faster while lasting the distance. For heavy traffic networks, and as a solid gaming ethernet cable cat6 - it just makes perfect sense
- REDUCED CROSSTALK: Four twisted pairs with a PVC Cross Separator reduces noise for clean uninterrupted connection. This cross flexi-core makes for a more durable cable that won’t bend or break. Our FastReel box lets this long ethernet cable cat 6 flow freely - saving time!
- PERFORMANCE: While many Cat6 ethernet cables still max out at 250MHZ, fast Cat. performs up to speeds of 550MHZ. It’s a 10 Gigabit Ethernet Cat 6 cable. The box performs well too! Rigid with splash proof coating, your ethernet cord is safe, tidy and damage free
- CERTIFIED AND TRACEABLE: All fast Cat. Cables are CSA and ETL Certified, TAA and RoHS Compliant, and CMR flame resistant (IEC 60332-3 Cert). Each cable is part of a detailed lot tracking system, barcode traceable and comes with a full guarantee. When you order now, you’ll be joining thousands of companies around the world who rely on fast Cat.
Check the cable itself before installation
Product pages and packaging are useful, but verify the actual cable jacket markings and its certification or listing. Confirm that the cable is marked for the category and jacket rating you need, and that the conductor material is solid bare copper. Prysmian’s Cat 6 product documentation specifies solid bare copper conductors; Southwire also identifies solid bare copper in its product documentation. See Southwire’s Category 6 cable information. ICC recommends checking the cable’s rating and certification markings rather than relying on a generic “Ethernet” label. Read ICC’s cable-rating guidance.

- Confirm Cat 6, solid bare copper conductors, and the appropriate CMR or CMP jacket rating in the product documentation.
- Before pulling, check that the jacket markings on the actual cable match those claims.
- When the route or local requirement is uncertain, confirm it with the building official or an electrician.
Cat 6 or Cat 6A?
Cat 6 is a sensible general recommendation for a new permanent run; the cited product documents establish Cat 6 Ethernet applications and product specifications, not that every home needs a higher category. Cat 6A is also available in riser-rated product form, but the available information does not establish that every installation needs it or that choosing Cat 6A guarantees a particular future network speed. Decide based on the requirements of your actual project rather than buying a higher category by default. ICC’s cable guidance can help explain category and rating markings.

Respect the cable’s installation limits
Follow the datasheet for the exact cable you purchase. Prysmian’s 2024 Carol Category Cable datasheet specifies a 1.0-inch minimum bend radius and a 32-pound maximum pulling force for that cable. These are product-specific limits, not universal values for all Cat 6 cable. The same datasheet gives a maximum DC resistance of 9.38 ohms per 100 m for its specified Cat 6 cable. Read Prysmian’s 2024 Carol Category Cable datasheet.
Avoid sharp bends and do not exceed the manufacturer’s pulling-force limit. If the run is difficult or the pathway is uncertain, pause rather than forcing the cable; check the product’s installation instructions and applicable building requirements.
