For a polished, still image of a SaaS screen, use a design file and place realistic interface content directly into it. For a screen that needs to demonstrate navigation or changing states, build an interactive prototype. Prompt-based tools can speed up a first draft, but refine the result with the product’s real terminology and design system, then preview it at the size where it will appear.
Choose the right kind of mock screenshot
Start with the job the image needs to do. A single dashboard, feature callout, or product-announcement graphic usually needs a carefully composed static design. A sequence of screens or an interaction—such as opening a menu or changing a setting—calls for a prototype. A backend is only necessary when the demonstration needs real behavior such as authentication, saved content, or server requests.

| Approach | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static design file | Hero images, feature callouts, and concept screens | Direct visual control and reusable design assets; no working backend required | Does not demonstrate behavior by itself |
| Interactive prototype | Flows, state changes, review, and feedback | Can show clickable interactions, multiple screen sizes, and rich media | More setup than a single static screen |
| Prompt-based prototype | Quick exploration and a first draft | Can start from a description and an existing design system, then be refined | Generated screens need review; connected data and backend behavior add setup |
These are workflow distinctions based on Figma’s published capabilities, not a hands-on comparison of design tools. Figma describes Design files for responsive and interactive designs (Figma Design), no-code prototyping (Figma prototyping), and prompt-based mockup and prototype creation with Figma Make (Figma Make).
Build the screen around the product
Start with a blank file or a design system
A blank design file gives you control over layout and styling. If the product already has a component library or design system, use it as the starting point so the mockup can reflect its actual visual language. Figma Make can use an existing design system and accept a description as a prompt; treat its output as a draft to refine, not as proof that the screen is accurate (Figma Make).

Make the content plausible and specific
Use the terminology, hierarchy, colors, typography, and component patterns that belong to the product. Populate the screen with plausible names, dates, metrics, and statuses that support the feature being shown. Avoid generic filler when realistic content would help a reader understand the interface. These choices are editorial practice, not a guarantee that a generated screen will match a live product.
Represent the intended state
Decide whether the image shows a default, empty, loading, success, or error state. For a static design, place the sample content directly in the file. For an interactive prototype, connect the screens or controls needed to communicate the flow. Figma describes prototyping as supporting interactive no-code experiences and multiple screen sizes (Figma prototyping).

Use a backend only when the prototype needs one
A still mock screenshot does not need live data: sample values in the design are often sufficient. A backend becomes relevant when the demo must retain a change, authenticate a user, submit a form, load saved content, or make a server request. Figma’s documentation discusses connecting backend functionality for these use cases (Connect to a backend in Figma Make).
- Keep API keys, tokens, and other secrets out of prompts and visible interface content.
- Enter credentials only through the tool’s designated secret interface when one is available.
- If a live backend is unnecessary to communicate the idea, use sample content instead; it reduces setup and avoids exposing real user or account data.
Preview at the size where the image will appear
- Open the design or prototype preview and inspect the screen at full size. Check that labels, controls, and important content remain legible.
- Preview the dimensions relevant to the destination. For a mobile context, check a mobile-sized view rather than assuming a desktop layout will translate cleanly.
- For a functional prototype, verify that the intended interactions work and that the sharing permissions allow the intended reviewers to access the preview.
- Export or share only after checking the final screen and its context.
Figma documents fullscreen and mobile previews, along with sharing controls for functional prototypes, in its prototype preview and sharing guidance.

Label mockups honestly
If a screenshot contains fabricated sample data or depicts a feature that is still proposed, identify it as a mockup or concept where readers could otherwise mistake it for a live product screen. A clear caption protects trust without diminishing the value of the visual.

Common problems and fixes
- The mockup looks generic. Replace broad prompts and placeholder text with product-specific terms, real component patterns, and plausible content; review generated output rather than treating it as finished.
- The screen is convincing, but the demo cannot complete an action. A static image only communicates appearance. Use a prototype for navigation or state changes, and add backend behavior only if the flow needs persistent state, authentication, submissions, or server requests.
- The layout is hard to read in its destination. Preview at the intended dimensions, including a mobile-sized view when relevant, and adjust the composition before sharing.
- A shared prototype is inaccessible. Review its sharing permissions and ensure the intended viewers can open the preview.
- A demo reveals sensitive information. Use sample data where possible and keep API keys and tokens out of prompts and visible screens.
