How to Create Hot MySQL Backups with Percona XtraBackup

Learn the production-safe XtraBackup sequence for MySQL-compatible servers, including 8.4 compatibility limits, prepare and restore commands, incremental cautions, and recovery testing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Percona XtraBackup creates a physical, hot backup while a supported MySQL-compatible server continues serving traffic. The reliable workflow is check compatibility, run the backup, prepare it, restore to a stopped server with an empty data directory, correct ownership, and validate the recovered application. A copied directory is not automatically a usable backup: preparation and restore testing are part of the procedure.

What a hot XtraBackup does

Percona describes XtraBackup as an open-source hot-backup utility for MySQL-based servers that keeps the database fully available during planned maintenance windows. Instead of exporting rows into SQL statements, it copies the server’s physical data files while a log-copying thread captures transactional log records needed to make those files consistent.

The source instance remains online during the copy, so applications can continue reading and writing. “Hot” does not mean the operation has no resource impact: the copy consumes storage bandwidth and CPU, and a busy transaction log can create a failure condition if log records are overwritten before XtraBackup reads them. Monitor output, alert on a nonzero exit status, and do not treat a directory as successful merely because files appeared in it.

The reviewed documentation is for the XtraBackup 8.4 series. Its quickstart names MySQL Server, Percona Server for MySQL, and Percona XtraDB Cluster as supported server families, with InnoDB, XtraDB, MyISAM, and MyRocks listed as supported engines.

Check compatibility before copying anything

Compatibility is a release-specific gate, not a detail to discover during recovery. The XtraBackup 8.4 documentation says that this line requires databases created with the 8.4 series or later and does not support MySQL 8.0 or MySQL 9.x servers. If your server is on an older release, use the XtraBackup documentation matching that server and database version rather than applying the 8.4 commands blindly.

  • Identify the exact database server family and version, including whether it is MySQL Server, Percona Server for MySQL, or Percona XtraDB Cluster.
  • Confirm that the XtraBackup major and minor release is intended for that server and database format.
  • Verify that the account used for the operation has the required MySQL privileges and that the operating-system user can read the data files.
  • Confirm that the backup destination is writable and has enough capacity for the selected full, incremental, compressed, or streamed form.
  • For disaster recovery, place the destination outside the source host or failure domain; a second directory on the same disk is not an independent copy.
  • Decide where backup metadata, command output, exit status, and transaction-log sequence information will be recorded.

Use a protected login configuration or another secret-management method where possible. Putting a real password directly in a script or shell command can expose it through shell history, process listings, or logs. The example below uses a placeholder password only to show the command shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a hot full backup

Use a new, empty target directory

XtraBackup does not overwrite an existing target directory. Create a date- and run-specific directory and ensure it is empty before starting. A unique path prevents one run from accidentally mixing files with a previous run and makes retention and audit records easier to manage.

xtrabackup --backup --target-dir=/data/backups/
  --user=backup --password='REDACTED'

--backup selects backup mode and --target-dir identifies the destination. Run the command as root or through sudo when the operating-system permissions require it. In an automated job, capture both the complete output and the process exit code; only a successful exit should advance the run to preparation.

What happens while the command runs

XtraBackup copies the physical data files while a separate thread scans the transactional log. Those log records bridge changes that occur while individual files are being copied. On a write-heavy system, the log-copying thread can fail if the server cycles through log space faster than XtraBackup can read it. Keep the command output and monitoring alerts, because this failure may be the only indication that the resulting directory cannot be used.

Do not promise a fixed backup duration or throughput. The reviewed official material provides no authoritative production benchmark for either. Its approximately 15–20 minute quickstart and 30–40 minute Docker Compose tutorial timings describe learning the tutorial, not copying a particular production database.

Record enough metadata to recover later

Alongside the files, retain the run identifier, server identity and version, start and end times, command output, exit status, storage location, and the log-sequence information emitted by XtraBackup. Those records let an operator select the correct incremental chain and investigate a failed or incomplete run without guessing which directory is authoritative.

Prepare the backup before restore

A live copy contains files captured at different moments. Preparation applies redo and performs crash recovery so the files represent a consistent instant. Percona’s documented sequence is explicit: after creating a backup with --backup, prepare it and then restore it.

xtrabackup --prepare --target-dir=/data/backups/

The prepare operation can run on a utility host rather than on the original database server or the eventual restore server. That allows preparation to use a separate machine’s CPU, memory, and temporary storage while production continues serving requests.

Preparing a full backup that will receive incrementals

If the full backup is the base for incremental backups, do not perform the final normal prepare first. Start with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
xtrabackup --prepare --apply-log-only --target-dir=/data/backups/

--apply-log-only leaves the base in the state required to accept incremental changes. Apply each incremental in sequence according to its log-sequence-number range, retaining the base and every required incremental in a controlled chain. After the final incremental has been applied, run the normal final prepare so uncommitted transactions are rolled back and the directory becomes restore-ready.

Preparation is a destructive transformation of the backup’s recovery state. Do not interrupt it casually: Percona warns that an interruption can corrupt data files and make the backup unusable. Run it where the process can finish, preserve its output, and investigate failures before attempting a restore.

Restore with copy-back

Why the target must be stopped and empty

Physical files cannot safely replace a live server’s data directory. Stop the MySQL instance and remove the existing contents from the target data directory before copying the prepared backup into place. Confirm the path carefully; an incorrect recursive deletion can destroy an unrelated directory.

systemctl stop mysql
rm -rf /var/lib/mysql/*
xtrabackup --copy-back
  --target-dir=/data/backups/
  --datadir=/var/lib/mysql/
chown -R mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql
systemctl start mysql

The service name and data-directory path can differ by distribution, package, container, or custom installation. Substitute the paths used by your host and verify them before running the stop or removal commands.

Copy-back versus move-back

--copy-back leaves the prepared backup directory intact while copying its files to the destination. --move-back moves files instead, removing the backup copy as part of the operation. Use move-back only when deliberately accepting that loss of the prepared source; keeping the source is safer for a recovery drill, investigation, or second attempt.

Fix ownership before startup

A restore executed as root can leave the files owned by root, while MySQL normally runs as the mysql operating-system user. The ownership correction in the example is therefore part of the restore, not optional cleanup. Check the resulting permissions and then start the service. Inspect the server log for the expected “ready for connections” message and for permission, redo, or data-dictionary errors.

Validate the recovered service, not just the files

A successful copy-back proves only that files were placed in a directory. A recovery test must prove that the database starts and that the data required by the application is usable.

  1. Run the restore on an isolated host, virtual machine, or container so it cannot accidentally receive production traffic or conflict with the production server.
  2. Confirm that the service reaches its normal ready state and that startup logs contain no unresolved storage, permission, or recovery errors.
  3. Check the expected schemas and tables, including objects that are easy to overlook such as scheduled-event metadata, application configuration tables, and security data.
  4. Compare representative row counts or other known invariants with the source’s recorded values.
  5. Execute representative read queries used by the application and verify that indexes, constraints, and character-set behavior are correct.
  6. Exercise the application against the isolated database where practical, then record elapsed restore time and any manual steps.
  7. Document whether the result meets the organization’s recovery point and recovery time objectives; a technically valid restore can still be too slow or too old for the business.

Schedule these drills regularly. The backup is useful only if the team can retrieve it, prepare it, restore it, and locate the keys and credentials needed to operate the recovered service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use incrementals without losing the recovery chain

An incremental backup copies changes since a prior backup, reducing the amount of data transferred after a full. The saving comes with stricter bookkeeping: retain the base full backup, every required incremental, and the metadata that establishes their log-sequence order. Missing one link or applying them out of order breaks the chain.

  1. Create and retain a prepared full base using --apply-log-only when it will receive incrementals.
  2. Store each incremental in its own run-specific directory and record the LSN range reported by XtraBackup.
  3. Apply incrementals to the base in ascending LSN order, preserving command output for each application.
  4. After the last incremental, perform the normal final prepare to produce the restore-ready directory.
  5. Restore that prepared directory to a clean, stopped target and run the same service and application checks as for a full backup.

Periodically test a complete chain rather than only the latest full. Retention policies that delete an apparently old incremental can silently make newer points in time unrecoverable.

Stream, encrypt, and store a copy off site

The XtraBackup toolchain includes xbstream for streaming, xbcrypt for encryption, and xbcloud for transfers to Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, or MinIO. A common disaster-recovery pipeline is:

  1. Create a full or incremental backup on the source or a nearby backup host.
  2. Stream it with xbstream and encrypt it with xbcrypt when confidentiality requires encryption.
  3. Upload the resulting object or stream with xbcloud to storage in a separate failure domain.
  4. During a drill, retrieve the object, restore the encryption key material, and decrypt it.
  5. Prepare the recovered files and copy them back to a clean target before validation.

Keep encryption keys separate from the backup objects. A bucket full of encrypted backups is not a recovery plan if the key store is lost with the database host. Test retrieval of both the backup and its key material, including the credentials and permissions needed to access them.

Understand partial-backup limits

Partial backups are not interchangeable with full physical backups. They require innodb_file_per_table. Percona says to restore them by importing the selected tables, not with --copy-back or --move-back. They also must not be used as the base for incremental backups.

Use a partial backup only when the recovery design explicitly calls for table-level import and the selected tables’ dependencies are understood. For a complete server replacement or an incremental chain, use an appropriate full base instead.

How XtraBackup compares with other backup approaches

The choice is determined by the recovery outcome you need, not by whether a command is shorter. XtraBackup is a physical-file workflow; a logical dump reconstructs schemas and rows from SQL statements; a managed service adds provider-operated scheduling and storage controls whose exact behavior depends on the service.

Decision axis Percona XtraBackup Logical dump
Backup representation Physical data files plus transactional log information Logical schema and row statements
Source availability Designed to keep supported MySQL-compatible servers available during the copy Locking and read behavior depends on the dump tool, engine, and options
Restore speed Physical backups can restore faster than logical techniques such as mysqldump, according to MySQL documentation Requires recreating objects and loading statements; duration varies with data and workload
Incremental recovery Supported, with a full base, ordered LSN ranges, and a multi-step prepare Usually requires a separate logical-dump rotation design
Streaming and encryption xbstream, xbcrypt, and xbcloud are part of the toolchain Depends on the dump, compression, encryption, and transfer tools selected
Compatibility concern Must match the server family and database release; XtraBackup 8.4 excludes MySQL 8.0 and 9.x servers Logical portability can be broader, but features and versions still need testing
Operational burden Requires preparation, clean-target restore, ownership correction, chain management, and drills Requires dump integrity checks, statement replay, and equivalent application validation

Non-InnoDB tables can have different locking behavior in other backup products, so do not generalize the “hot” property across every engine and utility. Compare the actual engine mix, recovery objectives, storage footprint, off-site design, and testing workload before standardizing a method.

Common failure modes and fixes

The command refuses to use the target directory

Make the target a new empty directory. Move an old run out of the way instead of mixing its files with a new backup. Keep the old directory until its retention and validation requirements are satisfied.

The log-copying thread fails during a busy period

Preserve the output and mark the run failed. Investigate write volume, log-space turnover, I/O contention, and destination performance before retrying. Do not promote a partial directory to a recovery copy.

Preparation was interrupted

Stop treating that directory as trustworthy. Percona warns that interruption can corrupt the data files. Restore from the original untouched backup or another known-good copy, then rerun preparation without interruption.

MySQL will not start after copy-back

Check that the service was stopped before replacement, the data directory was empty, the --datadir path matches the service configuration, and all files are owned by mysql:mysql. Read the server log for the first substantive error rather than relying on the systemd summary alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The backup restores but the application is broken

Check schemas, row counts, permissions, character sets, required reference data, and representative application queries. A server that says “ready for connections” can still be missing a table or contain a recovery point too old for the application’s expectations.

An incremental chain cannot be completed

Inventory the base and every incremental directory, compare their recorded LSN ranges, and identify the missing or out-of-order link. If the chain is incomplete, restore the latest complete chain or full backup rather than improvising an unverified sequence.

Operational checklist

  • Match the XtraBackup release to the server family and database version.
  • Confirm supported engines and the special requirements for any partial backup.
  • Verify privileges, filesystem access, free space, and an independent destination.
  • Create a unique empty target and protect credentials.
  • Run --backup, capture output and exit status, and monitor log-copying warnings.
  • Prepare on a host with enough resources; use --apply-log-only for an incremental base.
  • Retain the full base, all required incrementals, LSN metadata, and encryption keys.
  • Stop the restore target, empty its data directory, and use --copy-back unless deliberately choosing the destructive move-back behavior.
  • Correct ownership, start the service, inspect logs, and run application-level validation.
  • Keep an off-host or off-site copy and schedule complete restore drills.

Final answer: the safe sequence

For a supported server, the practical sequence is backup → prepare → restore → ownership correction → startup and validation. XtraBackup lets the source remain available during the physical copy, but it does not remove the need for compatibility checks, capacity planning, clean-target restoration, incremental-chain discipline, key management, or regular recovery tests. Those controls are what turn a hot copy into a backup that can actually be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can preparation run on a different machine from the production database?

Yes. Percona states that the prepare phase can run on a utility host, so production and the restore target do not need to supply the preparation resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a partial backup suitable as the starting point for incrementals?

No. Partial backups require table-import restoration, not copy-back or move-back, and Percona says they must not seed an incremental chain.

What should be stored separately from encrypted backup objects?

Store and test retrieval of the encryption keys and the credentials needed to access them. Without that key material, encrypted objects cannot be restored.
