Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To make a RAR archive as small as practical, open WinRAR’s Add dialog, choose RAR (or RAR5 when recipients can open it), set Compression method to Best, and choose a dictionary size the computers that create and extract the archive can support. For many small, related files, enable Create solid archive. These settings can help with compressible data, but they cannot substantially shrink files such as JPEG images, MP4 videos, existing ZIP archives, or many encrypted files.
Use WinRAR’s Add dialog to set compression options
WinRAR’s archive dialog controls the format, compression level, dictionary size, volume splitting, solid mode, and other archiving parameters. To create an archive:

In the archive dialog, choose RAR as the archive format. Choose RAR5 if the people who will extract the archive have compatible software; use a more conservative choice if compatibility with older extractors matters.

Which settings make the biggest difference?
| Setting | When it can help | Trade-off or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Compression method: Best | When you want WinRAR to spend more effort looking for a smaller archive. | Creation can take longer. The result depends on the input; already-compressed or encrypted files may shrink little, if at all. |
| Dictionary size | When files have repeated data blocks far apart, or a solid archive contains similar large files. | Uses more memory as the dictionary grows and can make the archive incompatible with older extraction software. |
| Create solid archive | When packing many small, related or similar files. | Individual extraction and updates are less convenient than with a non-solid archive. |
| Long-range or exhaustive search | For redundant data in a final, size-focused attempt. | Can increase memory use and take substantially longer; exhaustive search is especially slow. |
| Recovery record | When repair information is worth having because storage or transfer damage is a realistic risk. | Adds data to the archive, so it works against the smallest possible file size. |
| Split to volumes, size | When a transfer service or removable medium imposes a part-size limit. | Creates multiple parts that must stay together for extraction; splitting is not itself a compression improvement. |
Choose a compression level based on the files
Best is the size-focused setting, not a promise of a particular reduction. The method has to find redundancy in the input: text, source code, and other repetitive data may compress well, while JPEGs, MP4s, many encrypted files, and archives such as ZIP are commonly already compressed. Raising the compression effort cannot reliably recover space those formats have already removed.
For a meaningful choice, create test archives from representative files using the settings you are considering. Compare the resulting sizes and creation times on your own data. A single benchmark or a percentage quoted for a different collection does not predict your result.
Set dictionary size for data and recipient compatibility
A dictionary is the history of data the compressor can refer back to when looking for repeated patterns. A larger dictionary can help when a file contains repeated blocks separated by long distances. WinRAR’s release notes specifically cite virtual-machine disk images as an example of large files with distant repeated blocks. It can also help a solid archive containing similar large files.
Start with a size that fits available memory and the software recipients will use. Increasing it for small files or data with little redundancy may consume resources without meaningfully reducing the archive. Very large dictionaries also narrow compatibility:

WinRAR 7 supports dictionaries up to 64 GB depending on available memory, according to the vendor’s release notes; this is not a recommendation that every archive should use the maximum.
If recipients’ versions or systems are unknown, avoid unusually large dictionaries. RAR5 metadata records dictionary requirements, but older extractors may still fail or refuse the memory allocation.
Use solid mode for collections that benefit from shared context
Solid archiving carries compression context from one file to the next. That gives the compressor an opportunity to exploit similarities across files, which is particularly useful for many small related files. WinRAR’s product page says solid archiving raises the compression rate by 10–50%, especially when packing a large number of small files. Treat that as vendor-published guidance, not a guaranteed improvement for a particular folder.
Solid mode is a less convenient fit when users need to extract individual files frequently or update individual members often. For those workflows, a non-solid archive may be easier to work with even if it is larger.

Consider long-range and exhaustive search only for a final size-focused run
WinRAR 7’s release notes describe long-range searching for longer and more distant repeated blocks. It can improve compression on redundant data, but uses more memory and may reduce speed. Exhaustive search is slower still and may produce additional gains. These options make sense when the data is highly redundant, archive size is the priority, and extra processing time is acceptable—not as automatic settings for every archive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Split an archive only when you need multiple parts
In the Add dialog, enter the desired part size in Split to volumes, size. WinRAR will create a multivolume archive. Keep all the volumes together and start extraction from the first volume; a missing part prevents the complete archive from being available. WinRAR’s FAQ explains the volume-size field and multivolume archives.
Volume splitting is a delivery choice, not a way to improve compression. If there is no upload, transfer, or media limit to satisfy, a single archive avoids the extra handling of multiple files.
Balance compression against recovery and everyday use
A recovery record adds repair information and therefore increases archive size. Include one when the possibility of damaged storage or transmission justifies the extra bytes; omit it if absolute minimum size is the sole priority. RAR5 records a recovery-record flag in the archive header.

There is no single setting combination that wins on every measure. Consider the archive’s purpose as well as its size:
Best Value
- Intuitive interface of a conventional FTP client
- Easy and Reliable FTP Site Maintenance.
- FTP Automation and Synchronization
-
Smallest practical file: Best compression, a dictionary matched to redundant data and recipient capability, solid mode for suitable related collections, and no recovery record unless its repair value matters.
-
Frequent individual access or updates: Prefer non-solid archiving for convenience, and avoid extreme search options if their time and memory cost is not worthwhile.
-
Unknown recipient software: Avoid unusually large dictionaries and confirm the chosen RAR format is supported.

Transfer or media size constraint: Set a volume size and keep every part together.
Verify the archive before deleting the originals
After creation, use WinRAR’s test function or extract a representative sample to confirm the archive can be read. Keep the originals until that check succeeds. This is particularly important for a multivolume archive, where all parts must be present.
