To create a help desk ticket from a live chat, decide what event should start the ticket—such as a customer requesting a live agent or an agent converting an existing conversation—then make sure the ticket type, required fields, customer identity, and routing rules are ready. The exact steps depend on whether your system uses current messaging, legacy chat, or a connected chat-and-help-desk integration.
Choose the ticket-creation workflow first
Live chat can become tracked work in several ways. Choose the workflow that matches how your team handles incoming requests:

- Automatic creation at live-agent handoff: In Zendesk messaging, a ticket is created when a customer requests a live agent. Agents are notified of the request. This suits teams that want each live-agent handoff represented as a ticket.
- Agent conversion of an existing conversation: In Intercom Inbox, an agent can convert a conversation into a Customer ticket. This lets the agent retain the existing conversation context while creating a distinct ticket record.
- Structured customer submission: A ticket form or workflow can collect specific details inside a conversation before or as a ticket is created. This is useful when a request needs information that a free-form chat may not capture.
- Cross-platform creation: An integration can create a ticket in a separate help desk from a conversation in the chat platform. This adds setup and ownership considerations because two systems are involved.
Ticket creation and assignment are separate decisions. Creating a ticket records the work; routing rules, triggers, or an assignment step determine who should handle it.

Prepare fields, identity, and routing
Do the configuration work before rolling out ticket creation. Otherwise, tickets may be created without enough information to act on them or may land in the wrong queue.
#1 Best Overall
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption

- Identify the product and channel generation. Confirm whether your team uses current messaging, legacy live chat, or a live-chat feature inside an agent workspace. Zendesk’s legacy troubleshooting guidance does not apply identically to its current messaging experience.
- Choose the creation event. Decide whether a customer’s request for a live agent should create a ticket automatically, whether an agent will convert a conversation, or whether a form, Workflow, API, or integration should create it.
- Define the ticket structure. Set ticket types, required attributes, and allowed initial statuses. In Intercom, ticket types must be set up before an Inbox conversation can be converted to a Customer ticket.
- Set assignment and notification behavior. Decide which team or agent receives each ticket and how agents are notified. Zendesk documents triggers and chat routing rules for messaging tickets, with omnichannel routing as another option.
- Decide what context to carry over. Associate the correct customer, give the ticket a clear issue summary, and include the transcript when your platform supports it. Transcript handling is not established as identical across products, so confirm what your selected setup actually preserves.
- Test representative cases. Test routine requests, missing information, and out-of-hours handoffs. Confirm that each created ticket appears in the intended queue and has the context agents need.
Create a ticket from an Intercom Inbox conversation
Intercom’s documented agent workflow converts an existing Inbox conversation into a Customer ticket. The ticket type must already be configured.
- Set up ticket types first. In Intercom, configure the Customer ticket type you intend agents to use, including its attributes and available statuses.
- Open the relevant conversation in Inbox. Check the customer identity and conversation details before creating the ticket.
- Use the ticket control in the conversation. Select the option to create or convert to a ticket, then choose a Customer ticket type.
- Complete the ticket details. Fill in the attributes required by that type and select an initial status.
- Review the created ticket in context. Intercom displays the ticket’s title, ID, and description alongside replies and internal notes. The converted item counts in both conversation and ticket reporting.
If an agent should not have to convert chats manually, Intercom also documents ticket forms in conversations, Workflows for collecting details, and ticket creation through APIs. Those approaches serve different processes: use conversion for existing conversation context, and a form or Workflow when structured information needs to be collected.
Set up Zendesk messaging ticket creation and routing
Zendesk documents automatic ticket creation in messaging for the Web Widget, mobile SDKs, and social channels when a customer asks for a live agent. Agents are notified that a request has arrived. Zendesk describes ticket triggers and chat routing rules for assignment and notification, as well as omnichannel routing as an alternative.

- Confirm the messaging channel. Zendesk’s getting-started guidance describes messaging with a Web Widget or mobile SDK; the routing documentation also covers social channels.
- Configure how the incoming ticket is handled. Set ticket triggers and chat routing rules, or use omnichannel routing, so the ticket reaches the intended agent or group.
- Test a live-agent handoff. Request a live agent through the customer-facing channel and confirm that a ticket is created and agents receive the expected notification.
- Check channel and field conditions. Zendesk describes routing based on ticket conditions and collected fields. Test relevant combinations so the right requests reach the right teams.
The cited Zendesk guidance says skills-based routing is not available for messaging tickets. The workflow is also version-sensitive: Zendesk’s Chat Legacy and Support + Chat troubleshooting instructions describe different behavior from current messaging or live chat in agent workspaces.

Create a Freshdesk ticket from an Intercom conversation
Intercom’s Freshdesk app connects the two platforms. Intercom documents using it to create Freshdesk tickets from Intercom conversations and view recent Freshdesk tickets within the Intercom workspace.
- Install the Freshdesk app in Intercom.
- Authorize the app. Complete the authorization step required to connect the accounts.
- Enter the Freshdesk domain and API key. The documented setup requires both.
- Test ticket creation and visibility. Create a Freshdesk ticket from a representative Intercom conversation, then check that it appears in Freshdesk and that recent Freshdesk tickets are visible where expected in Intercom.
- Define which system owns follow-up. Decide which platform is authoritative for assignment, status changes, and customer updates so agents do not manage the same work inconsistently in both places.
What to do when no ticket appears
First identify the product experience in use. Zendesk’s troubleshooting article covers Chat Legacy or Support + Chat plans and explicitly distinguishes them from current messaging or live chat in agent workspaces.
Zendesk Chat Legacy or Support + Chat
Zendesk lists several possible reasons a ticket may not appear in these experiences:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Ticket creation is disabled.
- The chat session has not ended.
- The end user is suspended.
- The ticket has already been marked closed.
In contrast, Zendesk says current messaging or live chat in agent workspaces creates a ticket when the chat is accepted. Do not troubleshoot the current workflow using legacy-chat assumptions.

Intercom or a connected help desk
For other setups, check the steps on which creation depends:
- Was the correct conversion, handoff, form submission, Workflow, or integration action used?
- Did a required ticket attribute or initial-status requirement prevent submission?
- Is the conversation associated with the correct customer identity?
- For the Intercom–Freshdesk connection, is the app authorized and configured with the correct Freshdesk domain and API key?
- Did routing send the ticket to a different team or queue than the one being checked?
How to choose the right approach
Use these distinctions to match the workflow to your support operation:
- Choose automatic creation at handoff when every live-agent request should become tracked work. Zendesk messaging documents this behavior.
- Choose agent conversion when a chat may be answered and resolved conversationally, but an agent sometimes needs a separate Customer ticket. Intercom Inbox supports this workflow.
- Choose a form or Workflow when agents need structured details that customers should provide during the conversation, rather than relying only on free-form messages.
- Choose a connected help desk when the chat platform and ticket system are different products. Account for credentials, ticket visibility, and clear ownership of follow-up.
- Choose a unified ticket workspace when you want chats and tickets handled in one product. Freshdesk Omni describes web-chat conversion within a unified workspace.
Compare implementations on six practical points: when a ticket is created, whether the conversation and ticket remain linked in one interface, how flexible ticket types and required fields are, what routing controls apply to each channel, what customer history or transcript is retained, and whether a second system introduces integration and ownership work.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a chat to a ticket?
Use the chat platform’s conversion control if it supports manual conversion. In Intercom Inbox, open the conversation, use the ticket control, choose a configured Customer ticket type, then complete its attributes and initial status.

Does a live chat always create a ticket automatically?
No. Zendesk messaging creates a ticket when a customer requests a live agent, while Intercom Inbox documents an agent-initiated conversion of an existing conversation. Other workflows may use forms, Workflows, APIs, or integrations.
Can I create a Freshdesk ticket from an Intercom conversation?
Yes. Intercom documents a Freshdesk app for creating Freshdesk tickets from Intercom conversations. Setup requires installing and authorizing the app and providing a Freshdesk domain and API key.
Will the ticket include the entire chat transcript?
Transcript handling is not established as the same across the documented products. Check the behavior of your specific product and configuration, and ensure agents have a clear issue summary and the customer context they need.
Why might Zendesk not create a ticket after a chat?
For Chat Legacy or Support + Chat, Zendesk lists disabled ticket creation, an unfinished chat session, a suspended end user, and a ticket already marked closed as possible causes. Current messaging and agent-workspace live chat have different documented behavior, so confirm which experience your account uses.
