Choose Shopify if you want a general-purpose hosted store with a clear U.S. plan ladder and its built-in selling features. Choose BigCommerce if native B2B workflows, multiple storefronts, or broader payment-provider choice are central to your requirements. Neither is a universal winner: compare the fees that apply to your payment setup and sales volume, and match the exact workflow to the plan that includes it.
The prices below are U.S.-dollar figures shown on the vendors’ official pages on October 4, 2026. They are not universal: features, payment availability, and rates can vary by country and plan. Recommendations here reflect vendor-published information, not hands-on testing or independent comparative usability research.
BigCommerce vs Shopify at a glance
| Decision | BigCommerce | Shopify | What it means for your store |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. entry plan | Core: $39 monthly or $29/month with annual billing; a $30,000 trailing-12-month GMV cap and 2.0% eligible-order GMV fee are listed. | Basic: $39 monthly or $29/month billed yearly; 2% third-party transaction fee is listed. | Sticker prices are close, but the fee labels and conditions differ. Model your actual orders and processor charges rather than comparing subscriptions alone. |
| B2B and wholesale | Higher-tier price lists are listed; BigCommerce describes B2B Edition functions such as quotes, purchase orders, net terms, approval workflows, company hierarchies, and a buyer portal. Package and configuration matter. | Up to three B2B catalogs on Basic, Grow, and Advanced; unlimited catalogs on Plus. More complex requirements may need apps, customization, or development. | Compare the specific needs—negotiated prices, catalog counts, quote approvals, and buyer accounts—not just a general “B2B” label. |
| Multiple storefronts | Multi-Storefront manages distinct storefronts from one dashboard, with plan-dependent storefront counts and add-on costs. | Offers international and localized selling features and Plus expansion capabilities; these are not automatically the same architecture as BigCommerce Multi-Storefront. | Count brands, regions, currencies, catalogs, and inventory views before evaluating architecture and cost. |
| Payment-provider choice | Eligible embedded providers do not incur BigCommerce payment fees, but processor charges remain. Non-embedded providers may incur additional fees depending on plan. | Lists Shopify Payments processing rates and separate third-party transaction fees. Some rates and features depend on Shopify Payments. | Use your business country, preferred processor, card mix, and average order value in the cost comparison. |
| Ease of use | BigCommerce’s own material says Shopify is widely known for ease of use; it does not establish a neutral usability comparison. | The reviewed vendor pricing information is not an independent usability test. | There is not enough neutral comparative evidence here to declare one easier for every merchant. |
BigCommerce’s eligible-order GMV fees are not payment-processing fees, and “no BigCommerce payment fee” for an eligible embedded provider does not mean payments are free. Shopify’s third-party transaction fee is also separate from card processing. The two vendors’ fee labels are not exact equivalents.

BigCommerce plans
| Plan | Listed subscription price | Sales threshold or fee terms shown |
|---|---|---|
| Core | $39/month, or $29/month with annual billing | $30,000 trailing-12-month GMV cap; 2.0% eligible-order GMV fee |
| Growth | $105/month, or $79/month with annual billing | $100,000 trailing-12-month GMV cap; 1.0% eligible-order GMV fee |
| Scale | $399/month, or $299/month with annual billing | Page displays a $33,333/month threshold with a 0.9% overage; 0.6% eligible-order GMV fee |
| Performance | Custom pricing starting at $1,499/month, billed annually | Contracted fee terms |
BigCommerce says eligible embedded payment providers do not incur BigCommerce payment fees; the provider’s standard processing charges still apply. With a non-embedded provider, additional transaction fees may apply depending on plan. Its pricing page says U.S.-based businesses may see card processing starting at 2.89% + $0.29 per transaction, subject to eligibility and plan terms. That processing figure is not a substitute for checking the provider and offer that apply to your store.
Shopify plans
| Plan | Listed subscription price | Third-party transaction fee | Standard online card rate displayed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39/month, or $29/month billed yearly | 2% | 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Grow | $105/month, or $79/month billed yearly | 1% | 2.7% + $0.30 |
| Advanced | $399/month, or $299/month billed yearly | 0.6% | 2.5% + $0.30 |
| Plus | Starts at $2,300/month | 0.2% | 2.25% + $0.30 |
Shopify lists premium-card rates above the standard online card rates and additional charges for some international transactions and payment methods. The displayed rates are separate from third-party transaction fees; the applicable rate depends on the payment setup and market.
How to estimate the real cost
- Start with the subscription price for the billing term you actually intend to use.
- Estimate sales and orders over the period covered by the vendor’s thresholds. For BigCommerce, check how the plan’s GMV cap and eligible-order GMV fee apply to your account.
- Identify whether your processor is an eligible embedded provider on BigCommerce, or whether you would use Shopify Payments or a third-party provider on Shopify.
- Apply processor charges to your expected transaction mix. Include card type, international payments, payment method, and average order value where relevant.
- Add any required storefront add-ons, B2B package, app, customization, or development costs only after confirming the intended configuration.
This is a comparison framework, not a single break-even calculation: the two platforms’ fee bases and eligibility terms differ, and the result depends on your sales, location, processor, and configuration.

When BigCommerce is the stronger fit
Wholesale workflows are part of the core business
BigCommerce’s official materials describe B2B Edition capabilities including quote-to-cart, bulk ordering, purchase orders, net terms, approval workflows, company account hierarchies, and a buyer portal. Its pricing information also lists price lists on higher tiers. These are meaningful distinctions for merchants selling to business buyers who need negotiated pricing and account-level purchasing controls. Do not assume that every function is included in every plan: the exact package, plan, and setup determine what is available.
You need distinct storefronts under one operating view
BigCommerce describes Multi-Storefront as a way to manage unique storefronts from one dashboard and lists plan-dependent storefront allowances and add-on costs. This may suit a business operating separate brands or storefronts that need centralized management. Confirm how the planned arrangement handles catalogs, inventory, currencies, and regional variation, and include any add-on costs in the comparison.
Processor choice is a priority
BigCommerce emphasizes provider choice. Its terms distinguish eligible embedded providers, for which BigCommerce says it does not charge a payment fee, from non-embedded providers that may incur additional fees depending on plan. The payment provider still charges its own processing fees. This can be relevant if your business depends on a preferred processor, but the provider’s eligibility and total charges need to be checked for your location and plan.

Migration is possible, but store-specific
BigCommerce says it provides tools, partners, and resources to move products, customers, orders, content, and storefront data. That does not establish a standard migration duration or cost. Actual work depends on data quality, integrations, redirects, theme changes, and testing.
When Shopify is the stronger fit
You want a general-purpose hosted store with a straightforward plan ladder
Shopify’s listed U.S. plans range from Basic through Grow and Advanced to Plus, with subscriptions and listed card rates varying by tier. Basic and BigCommerce Core have the same displayed monthly and annual-billing-equivalent entry prices on the U.S. pages, but they do not have identical fee structures or entitlements. Shopify’s plan ladder can provide a clear starting point for merchants whose needs fit its standard selling workflows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Your B2B needs fit the catalog allowance or Plus
Shopify lists up to three B2B catalogs on Basic, Grow, and Advanced, and unlimited catalogs on Plus. For a business whose wholesale workflow centers on catalog segmentation, those stated limits provide a concrete starting point for comparison. Shopify’s vendor comparison says more complex B2B requirements may call for apps, customization, or development, so catalog count alone does not determine whether a setup can handle quotes, approvals, or account structures.

You use Shopify Payments or have modeled third-party charges
Shopify publishes standard online card rates by plan and separately lists third-party transaction fees. The pricing page also identifies higher premium-card rates and additional charges for some international transactions and payment methods. If your business relies on Shopify Payments, compare the applicable processing terms; if it uses another provider, account for both the provider’s charges and the Shopify fee that applies.

- Write down the workflows you cannot compromise. Specify whether you need B2B price lists, multiple catalogs, quotes, purchase orders, net terms, buyer approvals, company hierarchies, several storefronts, or a particular processor.
- Map each workflow to a plan and configuration. BigCommerce’s B2B Edition and Multi-Storefront details are package- and plan-dependent. Shopify’s stated B2B catalog limits differ by plan, and complex workflows may need apps or development. Compare the exact requirements rather than feature labels.
- Calculate costs for your own operating assumptions. Use the actual country, expected GMV, order count, average order value, card mix, payment provider, and billing term. Keep subscription, platform fees, and processor fees separate in the calculation.
- Count storefronts and operating dimensions. List each brand or regional storefront, its catalog, currency, inventory needs, and team workflow. BigCommerce’s listed Multi-Storefront allowances and Shopify’s international/localized features are not automatically interchangeable.
- Scope migration before assigning a timeline. Inventory the products, customers, orders, content, integrations, URLs and redirects, and theme work that must move. Include validation and order-flow testing in the project plan.
- Make the decision on fit, not a broad winner claim. Choose the platform whose documented plan and payment terms cover the required workflows at a cost your store can support. The available vendor information does not settle comparative ease of use or prove a conversion advantage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shopify easier to use than BigCommerce?
The available vendor material says Shopify is widely known for ease of use, but it is not neutral comparative testing. It does not establish which platform will be easier for a particular merchant or team.
Is BigCommerce better than Shopify for B2B?
BigCommerce has a stronger documented case when the requirement includes its described B2B Edition workflows, such as quote-to-cart, purchase orders, net terms, approvals, company hierarchies, and a buyer portal. Shopify may fit businesses whose requirements align with its catalog limits; the right comparison depends on which workflows are necessary and what each configuration includes.

Can I run B2B and B2C from the same platform?
Both platforms describe B2B selling capabilities alongside ecommerce storefronts. The available information does not establish that every B2B workflow is included on every plan, so compare the required buyer and pricing functions with the exact plan and configuration.
Does BigCommerce have no transaction fees?
No blanket “no transaction fees” claim is supported. BigCommerce says eligible embedded payment providers do not incur BigCommerce payment fees, but processing charges remain; non-embedded providers may bring additional fees depending on plan. Its plan pages also list eligible-order GMV fee terms.
What is the cheapest plan on these U.S. pricing pages?
As displayed October 4, 2026, BigCommerce Core and Shopify Basic each cost $39 per month or $29 per month with annual billing. That subscription comparison does not include the different platform and payment fees or establish which costs less at a given sales volume.
Which platform costs less as sales grow?
There is no universal answer in the listed prices. BigCommerce’s thresholds and eligible-order GMV fees, Shopify’s third-party transaction fees, and each provider’s processing charges use different terms. Your country, sales mix, processor, and plan determine the result.
