How do I create a filter in New Yahoo Mail?
These steps are for New Yahoo Mail in a desktop browser. Yahoo’s help material also includes instructions for older desktop and Basic Mail interfaces, whose labels may differ; these steps should not be assumed to apply to every app or account interface.

- Open Yahoo Mail in a desktop browser.
- Select More options, then Settings.
- Select Filters, then choose Add new filters.
- Enter a name, set the message-matching rules, and choose or create the folder where matching mail should go. A folder can be used to organize mail or to divert it to Trash.
- Select Save.

Yahoo lists filters in priority order, from top to bottom. If two filters apply to the same email, the top filter is used. A broad filter above a more specific one can therefore take precedence. To change priority, select a filter in the list and use the up or down arrow controls at the top.

For example, if a general rule sends messages matching a phrase to a folder, but a more specific rule sends a subset to another folder, place the specific rule higher so it takes precedence when both match. Yahoo says each filter uses all the rules defined for it; use separate filters when messages should qualify under different criteria. [Filter priorities; filter troubleshooting]
Should I filter mail or block an address?

Filters and blocked addresses are separate controls. For mail that should be hidden from the Inbox but kept for review, choose a folder rather than Trash.

Why is a blocked sender’s email still appearing?
Yahoo warns that messages can still appear after blocking when the displayed From address is spoofed. In that case, inspect the message’s full headers and compare the bottom From address with the address shown in a Received or Mailfrom field. Yahoo identifies the topmost Received or Mailfrom field as showing the true sending address. You can block that address, or create a filter that routes the messages to a folder such as Trash. Why isn’t my Yahoo Mail filter working?
- Check Spam first. Yahoo says all messages pass through its spam filter before ordinary filters.
- Remember that new filters affect new mail, not existing messages. Move older messages manually if you want them sorted too.
- Review the rules within the filter. Yahoo says a filter uses all rules defined for it. Use separate filters for different combinations of criteria.
- Check for competing filters. The top matching filter takes priority. Move the intended rule higher with the up or down arrows.
- Prefer positive criteria where practical. Yahoo advises avoiding negative criteria such as “does not contain” and preferring positive criteria such as “begins with.”
- Inspect rules that redirect mail away from the Inbox. If a message goes to Trash or an unexpected folder, check whether a filter sends it there.

What if I use Yahoo Mail with another mail client?
Yahoo documents different limitations for POP and IMAP connections:
- POP: Yahoo says POP clients download only from the Inbox. If a filter moves mail to another folder, that mail may not be downloaded by the POP client.
- IMAP: Yahoo says filters do not work on third-party mailboxes connected through IMAP.
If a message appears in Yahoo Mail but not in the connected client, check which protocol the client uses and whether a filter moved the message out of the Inbox. [Yahoo Help: filter issues and mail clients]
