Use WooCommerce’s built-in coupon restrictions for code-based eligibility such as minimum spend, products, categories, or billing email. For automatic quantity tiers, order-total thresholds, role-based pricing, or more complex cart rules, use a dynamic-pricing extension.
Choose the discount method that matches your offer
| Method | Best fit | What you configure |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in WooCommerce coupon | A customer enters a code, and eligibility depends on spend, products, categories, sale items, or email address. | Coupon usage restrictions and whether the coupon can combine with other offers. |
| WooCommerce Dynamic Pricing extension | You need automatic or tiered product, order-total, category, or customer-role pricing. | Rule type, eligible items, quantity or spend thresholds, discount, dates, and rule order. |
| Product Dynamic Pricing and Discounts extension | You need cart-wide quantity or amount conditions, targeted discounts, or other cart promotions. | Eligible items, cart condition, adjustment, customer or role targeting, and rule priority. |
WooCommerce describes its Dynamic Pricing extension as allowing rules based on “products, order totals, roles, and product categories.” See the official Dynamic Pricing documentation for its rule types and configuration details.

Define the condition before configuring it
Write down four things first: what qualifies the order, which products receive the discount, how the discount is calculated, and whether the customer must enter a code. For example, “spend at least $100 on category A and receive 10% off category B” has a qualifying purchase and a separate discounted category. That distinction matters because some rules use the same items both to qualify for and receive the discount, while others let you specify them separately.
Recommended Free Tools
- Trigger: spend, quantity, product or category, customer role, or a combination.
- Eligible items: the products or categories included in the promotion—and whether other cart items count toward its threshold.
- Adjustment: a fixed amount, percentage, or fixed per-item price, depending on the rule type.
- Application: a coupon code or an automatic pricing rule.
- Timing and interaction: dates, rule priority, and whether other discounts may also apply.
Set up a conditional coupon with WooCommerce’s built-in tools
Built-in coupons are the simplest choice when shoppers should enter a code and the eligibility rules fit WooCommerce’s available restrictions. Create or edit a coupon, then configure its restrictions before publishing it.
#1 Best Overall
- In your WordPress dashboard, open Marketing > Coupons and add a coupon or edit an existing one. WooCommerce’s coupon management documentation describes coupon setup and restrictions.
- Open the coupon’s Usage restrictions section. Set a minimum or maximum spend if the offer depends on order value.
- Choose whether the coupon is for individual use and whether it excludes sale items.
- Specify eligible products or categories, and configure any product or category exclusions. If your offer requires a particular product or category to be present, set the relevant product restrictions.
- If the offer is limited to specific customers, enter the permitted billing email addresses.
- Review the settings and publish the coupon. Test it with an eligible and an ineligible cart before announcing the code.
Important threshold detail: WooCommerce’s documented minimum-spend calculation uses cart subtotal plus tax. If your promotion is meant to start at a particular pre-tax merchandise value, verify how that threshold behaves with your store’s tax settings before launch.
Set up automatic or tiered rules with Dynamic Pricing
Dynamic Pricing is a better fit when the discount should appear automatically or depend on quantity, order totals, categories, or customer roles. The exact controls vary by rule type; WooCommerce documents the main paths in its Dynamic Pricing guide.
Product quantity or product pricing
- Edit the target product and open Product Data > Dynamic pricing.
- Add a pricing group and choose who the rule applies to.
- Select the quantity basis, such as product, variation, cart line, or category, as appropriate for the offer.
- Choose bulk pricing or special-offer processing, then define any relevant dates, quantity ranges, and discount values.
- Update the product to save the rule, then test carts at each threshold boundary.
Order-total conditions
- Go to WooCommerce > Dynamic Pricing > Order totals.
- Add a pricing group and choose whether its condition uses the cart total or a category total.
- Set eligible customer roles and the minimum or maximum order amount.
- Choose the percentage discount and save the rule.
- Test orders below, at, and above the configured threshold, including carts with products that may not qualify.
Category rules
- Go to WooCommerce > Dynamic Pricing > Category.
- For a straightforward category adjustment, configure simple category pricing as a fixed or percentage adjustment.
- For conditions involving category quantities, customer roles, bulk pricing, or special offers, configure advanced category pricing.
- If one category should qualify the customer for a discount on another category, set the qualifying and discounted categories separately.
- Save the changes and test representative carts to confirm which items count toward qualification and which receive the adjustment.
Use cart rules for cart-wide amount or quantity offers
The official Product Dynamic Pricing and Discounts documentation covers cart quantity discounts, while the extension’s product page describes cart discounts and gifts. For cart rules, the documented path is WooCommerce > Cart Discounts Rules.
- Activate the extension and open WooCommerce > Cart Discounts Rules.
- Create a rule and select all products or specify the products or categories it covers.
- Set the condition using eligible cart quantity or amount. Check whether non-eligible products are excluded from the threshold calculation when that distinction matters to your offer.
- Choose the adjustment and configure any customer or role targeting.
- Set priorities if rules may overlap, save the rule, and test the resulting cart and checkout totals.
Check stacking, rule order, and customer-facing prices
Do not assume that a coupon disables an automatic pricing rule. WooCommerce’s Dynamic Pricing documentation says coupon discounts may be added on top of Dynamic Pricing settings. It also says pricing groups are evaluated from top to bottom and stop when a rule matches. The Product Dynamic Pricing and Discounts extension documents configurable cart-rule priorities. Review every overlapping promotion and test the exact cart totals shoppers will see.
Some rules depend on cart contents or customer eligibility, so the product’s catalog price may not show the eventual discount. Explain the condition where shoppers can find it—for example, in a site banner or the relevant product or category description—and make clear whether a coupon code is required.

If you are choosing an extension, compare the rule behavior you need rather than assuming every “dynamic pricing” tool works the same way. WooCommerce documents product, order-total, category, and role-based options for its Dynamic Pricing extension. Its Product Dynamic Pricing and Discounts extension documents cart quantity or amount conditions and customer targeting. YayPricing’s WooCommerce.com documentation describes simple adjustments, bulk pricing, BOGO, buy-X-get-Y, and rule conditions; confirm its current compatibility and whether its specific behavior meets your requirements.
