Sender and receiver must be on a network that allows NDI discovery and traffic.
Choose the right NDI sender
“Create an NDI stream” can mean sending a source into vMix or sending a feed out of vMix. These are different workflows: enable an output to transmit from vMix, or add an NDI input to receive a source from another device.

Send a computer screen over NDI
Mac: NDI Scan Converter
- Install NDI Tools and launch Scan Converter.
- Open the tool’s File menu and select the full desktop or the application window you want to share.
- For audio, select the appropriate sound source in macOS sound settings. Check that Scan Converter’s Mute Audio option is off if you want sound included.
- On the receiving computer, open vMix, choose Add Input, select NDI / Desktop Capture, and select the detected source.
NDI’s current Mac Scan Converter product page lists version 6.3.2, a minimum 1 Gbps local-area network, and 6 GB RAM or better for that tool. These are the listed requirements for this Mac product, not universal specifications for every NDI sender or format. See NDI Scan Converter for Mac.
Windows: Screen Capture HX
- Launch Screen Capture HX from the NDI Launcher.
- Set the desktop video and audio you want to share, then choose the available bandwidth, resolution, frame rate, audio source, and pointer-capture options appropriate to your setup.
- Use the receiving software’s NDI source browser to find and select the sender.
NDI describes Screen Capture HX as a GPU-accelerated capture path using H.264 or HEVC. Settings and available controls can vary by tool version and system. The documented HX workflow is not a guarantee of a specific bitrate or performance on a particular PC.

Send a vMix output over NDI
- In vMix, open Settings → Outputs / NDI.
- Enable the output you want to transmit. Output 1 is Program and carries the Master stereo mix. Other outputs can be configured separately.
- To send a source such as a camera, call, or audio input, configure it as an NDI source using the options available in your vMix edition.
- In the receiving application or on another vMix system, open its NDI source browser and select the advertised vMix output.
Available output counts depend on the vMix edition. Check vMix’s NDI guide and its edition information for the current limits and controls.
Send a phone screen or camera
Share an iPhone screen
Use NDI Capture, NDI’s iPhone screen-sharing app, when the source is the phone display. Start the app’s screen-sharing workflow, then select the phone as an NDI source in vMix or another NDI-enabled receiver. The official page lists version 1.8; check NDI Capture for current version and availability.

Use a phone as a camera
For camera video, use a mobile camera app that explicitly supports NDI output, rather than a screen-sharing app. NDI’s product finder lists Larix Broadcaster for iOS and Android with NDI HX2 output. App features can change, so confirm that the installed platform version still offers NDI HX2 before relying on it. See the NDI product finder.

NDI sources are discovered over the network. Connect both devices to the intended local network, make sure its firewall and network policy allow discovery and media traffic, and check that the sender is running. vMix’s guide says NDI sources on the network appear in its NDI input list. Its documented workflow assumes a Gigabit-enabled network; the 1 Gbps minimum on NDI’s Scan Converter Mac page applies specifically to that listed product.

If discovery does not work, check that both devices are on the expected network and that neither is using an unintended network interface. Review local firewall settings and managed-network policies for blocked discovery or traffic. Exact firewall ports are not specified here; do not open guessed ports or assume every Wi-Fi, guest, or VPN network permits device discovery.
Choose NDI High Bandwidth or NDI HX
NDI High Bandwidth and NDI HX trade network use against encoding and compatibility. NDI’s encoding documentation lists SpeedHQ for High Bandwidth and H.264/H.265 for HX 2–3. HX is designed for a lower bitrate and may suit limited bandwidth, including Wi-Fi or WAN links, but it uses a compressed codec path. Confirm that both sender and receiver support the chosen mode and consider the available network and CPU/GPU resources.

NDI describes HX as offering similar video quality at a lower bitrate in bandwidth-constrained contexts. That does not mean HX is always visually or operationally better: the result depends on the source, supported modes, receiver, and network conditions. See NDI encoding and decoding documentation.

- vMix cannot see the source: Confirm the sender is running, both devices are on the intended network, and local firewall or network policy permits discovery and traffic. Recheck the sender’s active network interface.
- The source appears but stutters on Wi-Fi: vMix offers Low Bandwidth Mode and Increase Buffer Size for an NDI input. Increasing the buffer can improve smoothness on unstable or wireless networks, but vMix’s guide says it adds approximately five frames of latency.
- Screen video arrives without sound: Check the sender’s selected audio source and mute setting. On Mac Scan Converter, check macOS sound settings and ensure Mute Audio is off.
- HX will not play in the receiver: Check that the receiver supports the sender’s HX mode and codec, and that the sender’s GPU supports its capture path.
- A managed or guest network hides devices: Network isolation, VPN routing, or firewall policy may prevent discovery even when internet access works. Test on a permitted shared LAN or ask the network administrator about local-device discovery and traffic.
