Use Shorts to introduce channel-relevant ideas, then give interested viewers a clear next step: a closely related video from your channel. Track how viewers respond and refine the topics and presentation that work for your audience. Shorts can help people discover a channel, but they do not guarantee long-form views, subscribers, or growth.
How Shorts can help your channel grow
Shorts give viewers another way to find your work. YouTube may recommend a Short based on an individual viewer’s interests and viewing history, and on how that viewer responds when the Short appears. Shorts may surface in the Shorts feed, Home, subscriptions, Search, sounds and hashtags, and the Trends page. Search also considers how metadata relates to a query and whether people click and watch. YouTube’s Shorts discovery guidance describes these pathways and signals.

This is not a universal formula for reach. Topic interest, competing videos and seasonality can all affect impressions. A Short may perform well with the viewers who see it and still receive fewer impressions if demand changes or other videos compete more successfully for a particular viewer.
YouTube says Shorts performance does not hurt long-form video recommendations. It also says recommendations can connect Shorts, longer videos, livestreams and posts. But people do not necessarily enjoy every format equally. Treat cross-format viewing as a possibility to test, not an automatic result. YouTube points creators to experimentation and the Unique Viewers metric for understanding active audience size.

Build a Short that leads naturally to your channel
Choose an idea for the audience you already serve
Start with the channel’s subject and the viewer’s likely reason for watching. A Short might answer one focused question, demonstrate a moment from a longer process, or preview a fuller explanation. The connection should be meaningful: a viewer who likes the Short should have a reason to want the next video.
Make the Short understandable on its own
Give viewers a clear reason to stay, then deliver what the opening promises without unnecessary delay. YouTube says its systems observe whether people choose to watch, ignore or mark a Short “not interested,” whether they keep watching, average view duration, average percentage viewed, likes and survey responses. These are signals to learn from, not individual switches that guarantee distribution.

Attach a relevant video after upload
If the Short introduces a tutorial, explanation or related installment, use YouTube’s related-video feature to connect it to that next step. In YouTube Studio, open the uploaded Short’s details and use the related-video control to select an eligible video. Viewers see a clickable link below your channel handle in the Shorts player. The feature requires advanced feature access; the linked video must be public or unlisted and comply with Community Guidelines. See YouTube’s instructions for adding a related video.

Review Shorts analytics and decide what to make next
Find the Shorts reports
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, select the Content tab, then choose Shorts. YouTube documents views, likes, subscribers, shown in feed, and the share of viewers who chose to view rather than swipe away. Traffic reports can show sources, YouTube search terms, suggested videos and playlists. The Shorts analytics guide explains these reports.
Use metrics to answer specific questions
- Shown in feed and chose to view: Was the Short shown, and how often did viewers watch rather than swipe away?
- Retention signals: Once viewers chose to watch, did they keep watching? Read average view duration and average percentage viewed in context.
- Subscribers: Did the Short coincide with subscribers gained or lost? Compare with your channel’s usual performance instead of assuming every view should convert.
- Traffic sources and search terms: Where did viewers find the Short, and what searches are associated with discovery? Use recurring patterns to identify topics worth exploring.
- Top remixed: Which Shorts inspired remixes, and were they sound, cut or green-screen remixes?
Compare like with like
Group Shorts by topic or format and review them over a consistent period. Compare stronger and weaker examples to see what differs in the idea, opening, delivery and audience entry point. Do not treat one viral Short as the standard for every upload; YouTube advises looking for patterns across content.

Mind which view measure you are comparing. Since March 31, 2025, YouTube has counted a Shorts view when it starts to play or replay, without a minimum watch time; the previous measure is called Engaged views. YouTube’s Shorts creation guidance describes that change. Raw starts help show how often playback began; Engaged views and the chose-to-view report are more useful when asking whether viewers elected to keep watching.

Choose a posting cadence you can sustain
YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence required for Shorts to perform well. Set a schedule you can maintain while making videos your audience wants; daily posting is not a platform requirement. Use the analytics patterns above to decide whether a topic or format merits another Short rather than publishing more often for its own sake.
