In an OBS-style setup, the holding screen is a scene alongside your service scene: switching scenes changes what viewers see while the existing YouTube broadcast continues. Keep YouTube’s Live Control Room open to check the incoming preview and the public stream.
Build the holding screen before you need it
Set up the scene while the service is not under pressure. The precise controls vary by encoder and version, so treat these as an OBS-style workflow and confirm the labels in the software your church uses.

- Create a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene named “Holding” or “Technical difficulties.” Keep a separate “Service” scene for the normal program.
- Add the visual: Add a background image or other suitable media source, then add readable text such as “We’ll be right back” or “Please stay with us while we restore the service.” Keep the wording brief and legible on a phone.
- Use only information you can stand behind: If the team knows what happened or has a reliable return estimate, you may include it. Do not promise a restart time that has not been confirmed.
- Preview the scene: Check that the background and text fill the intended frame and that the scene does not reveal a camera, desktop, or other unintended source.
A static image is usually the simplest fallback. A looping video can add movement, but check that it repeats as intended and does not introduce unwanted audio. A countdown can be misleading during an unplanned outage: a looping countdown file repeats rather than automatically aligning itself with the actual restart time. Use a manually updated message instead if the return time is uncertain.

Switch to the holding scene in the encoder preview and listen to its output. Confirm that any intended audio is present and that microphones, computer audio, or other program sources are not accidentally being sent. If the message should be silent, check that the holding scene cannot unexpectedly expose or play a source from the service setup.

YouTube supports encoder-based streaming through software or hardware. The encoder sends its composed output to the broadcast; the scene and source controls are specific to the encoder and its configuration. A scene change in OBS changes the outgoing picture within that encoder output, but do not assume another encoder handles scenes identically.
Connect the encoder to the YouTube broadcast
- Check channel readiness early: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until a service is about to begin.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: Create or select the church’s broadcast, and keep the control room available during setup.
- Copy the connection details: Enter the broadcast’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a credential; do not display or share it publicly.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview: Confirm that the expected output reaches Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s procedure is to wait for the encoder preview and then click Go live in Live Control Room.
- Check the viewer-facing result: When practical, confirm the public watch page shows the intended picture and audio. A healthy local preview alone does not prove that viewers are seeing the right scene.
Switch to the holding screen during an interruption
- In the encoder, select the prepared “Holding” scene when the service picture or audio needs to be taken off air.
- Check the encoder preview and, if possible, the public watch page to confirm that the holding message is actually visible.
- Leave the existing broadcast and encoder output running while the team diagnoses the problem. Avoid ending and recreating the broadcast just to replace the picture if the encoder can switch scenes within the current output.
- Before returning to “Service,” check the camera, presentation, and audio sources. Switch back only when the team is ready for viewers to see and hear them.
This is the OBS scene-switching model: the scene changes inside one encoder output rather than starting a new broadcast. It is not a guarantee for every encoder, connection, or broadcast configuration. Test the workflow with your installed setup before relying on it during a service.

Keep continuity separate from the recording
A nonstop live broadcast and its archive are different things. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That does not establish that an indefinitely running stream will be saved as one uninterrupted video longer than 12 hours. If the church needs an archive, plan recordings and review the resulting videos rather than assuming a continuous stream will produce one complete recording.
Troubleshoot the interruption
- The holding scene is visible in the encoder but not on YouTube: Check that the encoder is still connected to the intended broadcast and that Live Control Room is receiving its output. Verify the public watch page where possible before announcing that the screen has changed.
- The message appears with the wrong background or an exposed source: Recheck the scene’s source order, visibility, and preview. Select the intended holding scene rather than hiding service sources one at a time under pressure.
- Viewers hear unwanted sound: Check the holding scene’s audio sources and the encoder’s active audio output. Mute or remove unintended sources, then confirm the result in the preview and on the viewer-facing stream if possible.
- The countdown restarts or does not match the recovery: A looped countdown repeats; it does not know when the service will resume. Replace it with a static message or have a person update the message when a reliable return time is known.
- The encoder preview never arrives: Confirm the selected broadcast, stream URL, and stream key. If the channel is newly enabled for live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours; verify readiness before the event.
- The scene controls do not match these steps: Encoder interfaces differ. Find the installed version’s scene/source controls and test a switch while connected to a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast before using the workflow in worship.

Can I change the holding screen without creating a new YouTube broadcast?
With an OBS-style scene workflow, yes: select the holding scene within the encoder output that is already connected to the broadcast.

Will YouTube automatically save a nonstop stream as one long video?
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended; that does not promise a single archive for an indefinitely running stream.
