If a church sermon stream disconnects, check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room first, then verify the encoder’s stream URL and key, inspect the connection, and confirm playback from a viewer’s device. A restored encoder feed does not by itself prove the public broadcast is live again.
Recover the stream in this order
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check the selected stream’s state and preview. For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s documented sequence is to start the encoder, wait for its preview, then click Go live. Confirm the public watch page is playing; do not assume the encoder reconnect alone restarted the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions.
- Check the encoder’s destination and credentials. Confirm its server or stream URL and stream key match the stream selected in Live Control Room. The key is the credential YouTube uses to accept the encoder feed. If the encoder reports a start error, YouTube advises copying the key from the Live Control Room’s Stream tab and pasting it into the encoder. - Check the network and ingest protocol. Make sure the internet connection can sustain the selected stream quality and review YouTube’s stream health indicators. If the encoder is configured for RTMPS, verify that it uses the RTMPS URL and supports that protocol. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance calls out URL and encoder-support checks for SSL errors and timeouts. Avoid changing protocols mid-service unless you know the encoder and stream setup.
- Verify from a viewer’s device. Open the public watch page or channel on another device and confirm both picture and sound. Check that the stream is accessible and that audio and video are actually present—not just that the encoder says it is connected. YouTube live streaming tips.
- If the event has ended, decide whether a new stream is needed. YouTube documents ending a stream by stopping the encoder’s content and, for scheduled streams, selecting End Stream. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Its guidance does not establish that every encoder disconnect resumes the same live session. Check the Live tab for the archive; if a second stream or watch page is needed, tell viewers where to find it.
Diagnose what failed
Encoder cannot start or YouTube rejects the feed
Compare the encoder’s URL and key with the values for the selected stream in Live Control Room. If the encoder reports a start error, use the key from the Stream tab and update the encoder. Resetting the key is not a routine first step for every disconnect. Consider a reset if there is a reason, such as suspected compromise; only a channel owner or manager can reset it, and the encoder must then be updated with the new key. SSL error or timeout with RTMPS
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it. Verify the RTMPS URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. HLS is another option for compatible workflows, but it needs HLS-specific configuration and has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. It is a setup alternative, not a universal in-service fix; do not switch protocols without understanding the encoder configuration. Encrypt your stream using RTMPS · Set up an HLS stream.

Feed is unstable or stream health is poor
Choose a resolution and quality the actual upload connection can sustain. YouTube publishes settings recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; for example, for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and for H.264 at 720p and 30 fps it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube encoder-setting recommendations—not measurements of your church’s connection or a guarantee against disconnects. Test upload bitrate and select a reliable quality for the available connection. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Prepare a backup before the next service
- Set up the encoder ahead of the service, start it early, and check the Live Control Room preview before the scheduled start.
- Test backup-encoder failover in advance. YouTube’s tip is: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” Confirm the player actually changes over; having a backup device is not proof that failover works.
- Check that the local recording or archive is being created, test access through the channel and watch pages—including on mobile—and monitor audio and video quality.
- If a wired connection appears faulty, diagnose the cable and link before replacing hardware. A cable replacement only addresses a physical-link fault, not an encoder, account, or YouTube ingest problem.
