First enable live streaming for your channel, prepare recordings you have the rights to use, connect the encoder with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, then preview and monitor the broadcast. Keep the original recordings and local archive files: a continuous live stream is not a reliable way to preserve a complete YouTube replay.
What an always-on channel does—and what it does not
An always-on YouTube channel broadcasts prerecorded sessions as a live stream. An encoder sends audio and video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key; the stream can play one recording or cycle through a playlist. A microphone is optional: it can be useful when recording spoken guidance, but it is not required to stream prerecorded material. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes the connection and equipment options.

Continuous playback and replay preservation are separate jobs. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep the source videos and, if you need an archive, make a separate local recording rather than relying on the live replay. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends a local backup.
Prepare your channel and recordings
Enable live streaming before launch day
- Verify your YouTube channel and check that live streaming is available in YouTube Studio.
- Confirm the channel has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
Prepare sessions for continuous playback
- Arrange the recordings in the order you want viewers to hear them. Check transitions, volume consistency, silence at the ends, and whether any session is likely to be unsuitable when played repeatedly.
- Make sure the speech, music, ambient audio, artwork, and other visuals are original or cleared for the intended use, territories, and YouTube broadcast. Save licenses and permissions with the files.
- Keep the original video files in a separate, backed-up location. Do not treat the YouTube live archive as your only copy.
Choose how to keep the broadcast running
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software and hardware encoders, and its encoder resources also list a cloud service described as supporting 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. Compare options by whether they loop prerecorded sessions, connect through YouTube’s encoder URL and key, require a computer and home connection to stay on, support separate archives, and fit your budget and service requirements. YouTube’s listing establishes the workflow category, not a vendor’s current uptime, price, or service quality. Review YouTube’s current encoder resources before choosing.

Set up the YouTube Live connection
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and set its title, description, audience, and visibility.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room into the matching server/URL and key fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with anyone who does not need access. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Load the prepared video or playlist in the encoder and enable continuous looping if that is how you intend the sessions to play. Confirm the selected input, audio track, and output are correct.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that both picture and audio appear as expected before selecting Go live in YouTube, if the interface requires that final step.
Exact encoder controls vary by software or service. Follow its current instructions for selecting a playlist, looping, and starting output; YouTube’s connection details are the stream URL and key, not a universal set of encoder-specific menu names.
Test and monitor the stream
- Before announcing the channel, run a test and check the Live Control Room preview, the public or unlisted watch page, audio levels, picture, and playback order.
- Test the internet connection and leave bandwidth headroom rather than using all available upload capacity. YouTube’s guidance covers testing and stream health; keep monitoring after launch for interruptions or degraded audio/video. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
- If you are making a local recording, verify that the file is being created and growing. Check available disk space and confirm the finished file can be played.
- Check the stream periodically after it has been running. Confirm the YouTube watch page is reachable and the intended recording is still playing.
Plan for copyright and reused-content issues
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects material, it may replace the stream image, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. A license by itself may not prevent a Content ID interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. Resolve that with the rights holder before going live, and use original or properly cleared recordings, music, and visuals. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content on Google services, including applicable music rights. Read the YouTube terms and confirm your permissions cover the actual territories and uses you plan to serve. Repeating a recording does not itself establish permission to broadcast it.
