There is no universal screenshot API parameter for device scale factor. With Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), set deviceScaleFactor using Page.setDeviceMetricsOverride before capture. In Playwright, set the context’s deviceScaleFactor for device emulation, and choose the screenshot option scale separately to control output pixels. For a hosted service, use that provider’s documented field; these names are not interchangeable.
Set the factor with Chrome DevTools Protocol
CDP’s Page.setDeviceMetricsOverride method takes deviceScaleFactor alongside required width, height, and mobile values. Set the override on the page session before calling Page.captureScreenshot:

The override emulates screen dimensions and affects related CSS media-query results as well as device pixel ratio. A value of 0 disables the device-scale override. See the CDP method reference.
Configure the two related Playwright settings
Playwright separates device emulation from screenshot pixel mapping. Configure the context’s deviceScaleFactor to emulate a device pixel ratio, then choose the screenshot’s scale option to decide how CSS pixels become output pixels.

scale: "css"produces one output pixel per CSS pixel.scale: "device"produces one output pixel per device pixel, so a high-DPI context can create a larger image.
These are separate controls, not two names for the same setting. Check the documentation for the Playwright API surface you use: defaults can differ between APIs and tools. The page screenshot options document screenshot output behavior, while browser context options cover device emulation.
Do not put the factor in Puppeteer’s screenshot options by guesswork
Puppeteer’s documented ScreenshotOptions cover capture details such as full-page output, clipping, image format, and quality; they do not list deviceScaleFactor as a screenshot property. Configure device emulation through the relevant page or browser API, then use the screenshot call for capture options. Check the ScreenshotOptions reference for the current properties.

For hosted screenshot APIs, check the provider’s own field name
A hosted API may offer device pixel ratio, viewport emulation, output-image scaling, or a combination of these, but the title alone does not identify which field it accepts. Consult the provider’s documentation rather than sending deviceScaleFactor or Playwright’s scale blindly. When choosing a setting, decide whether you need one output pixel per CSS pixel or per device pixel, and consider the resulting image dimensions and file size.

Does a device scale factor change the CSS viewport width?
With CDP, the metrics override includes width and height and affects related CSS media-query results, so set the viewport dimensions you intend to emulate along with the factor.
Is a higher device scale factor always better for screenshots?
No. It can provide device-pixel output for high-DPI rendering, but increases output dimensions compared with CSS-pixel output. Choose based on the image’s intended use and size.
