How to Create a YouTube Rerun Channel for Retro Game Playthroughs

A practical guide to launching a YouTube channel for retro game reruns, from console capture and episode formats to copyright, monetization, and cloud looping.

To build a retro-game rerun channel, record gameplay you created yourself, give each episode a distinct point of view—such as commentary, a challenge, or historical context—and check the game publisher’s current rules before publishing. Owning a game does not automatically grant permission to publish or monetize its footage, and YouTube may reject extended gameplay with little creator input.

1. Set up a channel around a clear promise

  1. Create or choose a Google account and follow YouTube’s current channel-creation flow. YouTube’s interface may change, so use its help page for the live steps.

  2. Choose a name that signals retro playthroughs without suggesting that you are affiliated with, sponsored by, or an official channel of a game publisher.

  3. Use the About section to describe what viewers will get: for example, complete runs with commentary, historically contextualized playthroughs, or challenge-focused reruns. Be clear about your role and how you make the videos.

A recurring format or intro can help viewers recognize a series. The episodes still need distinct substance: a new route, mechanic, challenge, explanation, or other contribution—not simply the same unedited footage presented repeatedly.

2. Design episodes that add something of your own

Plan each episode around a specific reason to watch. A series can be consistent without making its videos interchangeable.

  • First-playthrough diary: Explain decisions and reactions as you encounter the game.
  • One mechanic per episode: Demonstrate a system, then explain how it changes play.
  • Route or challenge run: State the rules up front and discuss the choices and obstacles that shape the run.
  • Original hardware versus later port: Compare the play experience, with care not to imply that a comparison grants any additional rights to the material.
  • Retrospective around a run: Add your own historical or design context before or after the gameplay.

Commentary is most useful when it connects to what is happening on screen. If you are teaching a route or mechanic, explain the relevant decision as it occurs. A silent archival run may have an audience, but do not promise that it will qualify for monetization.

3. Choose a capture setup for the actual console

Start with the console’s video output, not with a generic “retro gaming” gear list. Some systems offer a suitable direct capture workflow; others may need a capture card, converter, or adapter. Retro consoles do not share one connector or signal standard.

  • Check the output: Identify the exact console model and whether its output is HDMI, composite, component, RGB, or another format.
  • Check the complete signal path: If an adapter or converter is needed, verify that it accepts the console’s signal and produces an input your capture device supports. Adapter chains can add cost and troubleshooting.
  • Match the workflow: Decide whether you want local recording, livestreaming, or both, and ensure the setup supports your intended microphone or commentary track and saves an archive if you plan to edit later.
  • Verify before buying: Check the exact console, signal format, adapters, and capture-device compatibility. A USB capture card is a possible category of tool, not a universal solution. No particular model is recommended here.

Capture your own play whenever possible. Re-uploading someone else’s gameplay does not make it original just because you credit the creator; YouTube’s reused-content rules are separate from copyright permission.

4. Check YouTube monetization and copyright before publishing

YouTube reviews the whole channel

YouTube considers a channel’s main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, share of watch time, metadata, and About section when applying its channel monetization policies. A repeatable series is not automatically disqualified, but the substance and value of its videos matter. Make it easy to see what each episode contributes.

Gameplay footage may not qualify for monetization

YouTube’s guidance on video game and software content says monetization depends on the commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. It warns: “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.” Commentary that is tied to the action and provides instructional or educational value may qualify, but neither commentary nor a publisher guideline guarantees YouTube Partner Program approval.

Read the exact publisher’s current rules

Rules differ by publisher and may vary by title, region, or type of channel. Check the official guidance for each game before starting a series, especially if you plan to monetize it.

  • Nintendo’s Game Content Guidelines, updated September 2, 2024, cover gameplay uploads and livestreams on YouTube. They list the YouTube Partner Program among monetization methods permitted under the guidelines’ conditions and say, “We encourage you to create videos that include your creative input and commentary.” The guidelines apply to individual consumers; do not assume they extend to corporate channels. Nintendo also excludes mere copied gameplay without creator or editorial input, subject to its described console-feature exception.

  • SEGA’s Streaming Guidelines, last updated March 12, 2026, allow platform monetization as an exception to a commercial-use restriction and require new elements such as commentary or narration in many cases. SEGA says customer gameplay videos cannot be promoted as official SEGA videos. Its guidance applies to individual users using products through legitimate means, says third-party intellectual property requires permission, and directs users to give title-specific rules priority if they conflict with the general guidance.

Publisher permission and YouTube approval are separate questions. A publisher’s general page may not settle a specific title, region, music license, or business arrangement. Check the current rules for the exact game and keep claims about legality or guaranteed monetization out of your channel promises.

Consider music and other third-party material separately

Rights in gameplay footage do not necessarily settle rights in music, guest contributions, characters, art, or other material included in a video. Use only material you have a basis to include, and check applicable publisher and rights-holder terms.

5. Protect livestreams and their archives

Livestreaming adds a copyright checkpoint. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream. If you save an archive, Content ID claims can arrive after the stream has ended. YouTube explains these risks in its live-stream copyright guidance.

6. Publish each rerun clearly

Make each title, description, and thumbnail accurate. Identify the game and platform, and state what is distinctive about that episode—such as a challenge rule, route, or historical angle. Do not imply publisher affiliation or sponsorship. For SEGA games, its guidelines specifically say customer gameplay videos must not be promoted as official SEGA videos.

Before publishing, check that the episode’s actual content matches its promise, your commentary or editing is apparent, and any third-party elements have been considered. Review the series at channel level from time to time: viewers and monetization reviewers should be able to tell how the episodes differ and what your channel adds.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; your computer can be off. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
