To create a YouTube radio stream with changing station logos, send an encoder-based livestream from OBS: combine your audio with artwork in an OBS scene, then play a looping media file or playlist. YouTube receives the finished audio-and-visual output; OBS controls what viewers see. You’ll need an eligible YouTube channel, music rights for the broadcast, and a computer and connection that can stay available while streaming.
Before you build the stream
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have had no livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Install OBS and prepare the audio and artwork you intend to use. OBS is free and open source, according to its Help Portal.
- Use only music and other material you have the necessary rights to broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a match can interrupt or terminate a stream.
- Plan to keep the streaming computer and its internet connection running for the duration of a locally hosted broadcast.
Set up the radio scene in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the radio broadcast. Add the audio source you intend to play and the visual source or sources for the station artwork. Arrange the sources so the logo is legible in the frame, then preview the complete scene and listen for clear audio without clipping.
- Choose how the artwork changes. You can use separate still images if your current OBS version provides the slideshow controls and timing you need, or prepare a sequence of changing artwork as a media file and play it as a source. OBS’s documented media-source features establish looping and playlist behavior, but do not specify the current click-by-click controls or timing for a still-image logo slideshow. Check the controls in your installed OBS version before relying on them.
- Choose how the audio or visual media repeats. For one local media file, OBS Media Source includes a Loop property. For multiple media items, OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist, Loop Playlist, and Shuffle Playlist. VLC must be installed separately; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Preview the full output. Confirm that the artwork changes as intended, remains visible, and does not cover essential information. Check that audio continues during transitions and that the scene looks right at the output dimensions you plan to stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as useful for broadcasts that use overlays.
- Open the Live Control Room’s encoder instructions for that broadcast. Copy the stream key and settings into OBS’s streaming configuration as directed by YouTube. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview before making the broadcast public or beginning the scheduled stream. Confirm that both the audio and changing artwork reach YouTube correctly.
YouTube’s Live Control Room can be configured for horizontal and vertical formats. Third-party encoder dual streaming uses RTMP(S) and separate stream keys; choose a format based on the presentation you want rather than treating vertical delivery as a requirement for a radio stream. YouTube’s current options are described in its live-streaming help.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder, temporarily interrupt it, or terminate it. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams before launch.

Use music for which you have the appropriate rights for this use. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube says the content owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself does not guarantee that the live stream will avoid interruption. Rights depend on the track, license, territory, and rights holder; this is platform guidance, not legal advice.

Monitor the stream and troubleshoot interruptions
During the broadcast, watch OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame counter, and monitor the stream in YouTube Studio. OBS’s Help Portal says an increasing dropped-frame count alongside a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- Dropped frames rise or the connection indicator turns yellow or red: check whether the internet connection is unstable or the configured bitrate exceeds what it can sustain. OBS’s guidance does not establish a numeric bitrate recommendation for this setup.
- A playlist item does not play: check that the media file is available to OBS and, for a VLC Video source, that VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS.
- The logo does not rotate as expected: verify the slideshow or media-sequence controls in the OBS version you are using, and preview the entire sequence before relying on it during a broadcast.
- YouTube interrupts the stream or shows a placeholder: check for a third-party-content match and resolve the rights or Content ID allowlisting issue with the rights holder.
- The broadcast stops when the computer or connection goes offline: a local OBS setup depends on that host and connection remaining available. The sources here do not establish a complete unattended 24/7 recovery plan.
