1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can prepare Windows for native boot from a VHDX and configure boot files on a USB drive, but Microsoft’s documented steps do not guarantee that every USB drive and PC will work together. The supported native-boot format for Windows 10 or later is VHDX, not the older VHD format. You need a Windows image, deployment tools, a boot configuration suited to the target PC’s firmware, and storage arranged for both boot files and the VHDX.
What “Windows booting from USB” means here
A native-boot VHDX is a virtual hard disk file containing Windows. The PC boots Windows from that file on physical hardware; it is not running Windows inside a virtual machine. This differs from a standard Windows installation USB, which starts Windows Setup so you can install Windows. Microsoft describes native boot in its Windows deployment documentation and documents USB as an example of a drive that BCDBoot can configure for use on another computer. Those references cover related parts of the process, not a universal guarantee for a complete USB-hosted VHDX setup.

For Windows 10 or later, Microsoft’s native-boot guidance requires VHDX; VHD is not supported for this scenario. Plan two separate roles on the destination storage: a system partition holding boot files and the BCD store, and a partition that holds the VHDX file. The Windows files themselves are inside the VHDX.

- A technician PC with the Windows ADK deployment tools and a bootable Windows PE (WinPE) drive. Microsoft’s walkthrough uses these to prepare and deploy the image.
- A generalized Windows WIM image and its correct image index. The image index and drive letters in commands must match your actual files and setup.
- A destination drive with at least 30 GB free, as specified in Microsoft’s native-boot walkthrough. A VHDX can require more space depending on its contents and configuration.
- A target PC that can boot from the relevant USB device and whose firmware boot mode matches the boot files you configure. The cited documentation does not establish compatibility for every PC, USB controller, enclosure, or drive.
Microsoft’s walkthrough creates a 25 GB fixed VHDX as an example; that is not a universal size recommendation. A fixed VHDX reserves its configured size. For a dynamic VHDX, the host volume must have room for the file to grow to its maximum size and for Windows to create the page file outside the VHDX.

Create and populate the VHDX
- Prepare the Windows image and WinPE. On the technician PC, install or use the Windows ADK deployment tools, prepare a generalized Windows .WIM image, and make a bootable WinPE drive.
- Create and mount a VHDX. Open DiskPart with the appropriate permissions and create a VHDX. Microsoft’s example creates a 25 GB fixed file:
create vdisk file=C:windows.vhdx maximum=25600 type=fixed
Attach it, create and format a primary partition inside it, and assign that partition a drive letter. The exact DiskPart sequence and letters depend on your environment; use Microsoft’s native-boot walkthrough rather than assuming the example letters will match your PC. - Apply the generalized image. With the VHDX partition mounted as V: in this example, apply the image using its actual path and index:
Dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:install.wim /index:1 /ApplyDir:V: - Detach and transfer the VHDX. Detach the virtual disk, then copy the VHDX to the destination storage. Microsoft’s walkthrough uses removable storage to transfer the file. Ensure the destination partition is large enough for the file and, if it is dynamic, its potential maximum expansion.
Prepare USB boot files for the target firmware
Boot the target PC into WinPE. Microsoft’s native-boot walkthrough prepares a system partition for boot files and a separate main partition for the VHDX. Its layouts are examples, not universal sizing instructions:
- UEFI example: GPT disk, a 200 MB FAT32 EFI System Partition, a 128 MB Microsoft Reserved partition, and an NTFS main partition.
- BIOS example: an active NTFS system partition and a separate NTFS main partition.
Identify the actual drive letters for the system partition and the Windows directory inside the attached VHDX. The following BCDBoot examples use S: for the system partition and V: for the VHDX’s Windows volume; substitute the letters assigned in WinPE.

For a UEFI target
Run:
bcdboot v:windows /s S: /f UEFI
For a BIOS target
Run:
bcdboot v:windows /s S: /f BIOS
BCDBoot also documents /f ALL as a firmware setting. Do not treat it as proof that the same USB will boot on every UEFI and BIOS system: the disk layout, firmware configuration, and target hardware still matter. Microsoft’s BCDBoot reference specifically describes /s as identifying the system partition when configuring a drive for another computer, with USB flash media as an example.

Test the drive and understand the limits
- Shut down the target PC, remove the WinPE drive, and connect the prepared destination drive.
- Use the PC’s firmware boot menu to select the USB drive, if the firmware offers it. The selected boot mode must match the configuration you prepared.
- If Windows does not start, return to WinPE and verify that the VHDX is present and accessible, the drive letters used with BCDBoot were correct, and the system partition and firmware mode match the target. A machine may also lack compatible USB boot support; Microsoft’s cited instructions do not resolve every hardware-specific failure.
- Native-boot VHDX does not support hibernation; Microsoft says sleep is supported.
- Microsoft says BitLocker cannot encrypt the host volume containing a native-boot VHDX, and cannot encrypt volumes inside the VHD.
- Microsoft warns that, on systems updated from November 2022 onward, a VHDX carrying the Zone.Identifier alternate data stream (Mark of the Web) cannot be natively booted without associated issues. Its guidance is to ensure the VHDX does not carry that stream.
Do not format the VHDX storage as installation media by default
Microsoft’s Windows installation-media guidance describes media used to start Windows Setup. It lists FAT32 for BIOS/UEFI installation media, but FAT32 has a 4 GB per-file limit. That installation-media detail is not a blanket formatting rule for the partition that stores a VHDX; Microsoft’s native-boot examples use an NTFS main partition for the VHDX storage.
