It hides your active or recently active indicators; those are separate from Story views.
What Activity Status hides—and what it does not
Activity Status controls whether people covered by Instagram’s setting can see when you are active or were recently active. Instagram also says that if you turn it off, you will no longer see other accounts’ Activity Status. It does not make Story viewing anonymous. Instagram’s Help Center explains the Activity Status setting, while a Linktree guide describes Story views as a separate viewer-list record.

So if you watch someone’s Story while signed in to your account, your account can still appear in that Story’s viewer list even with Activity Status off. There is no built-in Instagram switch identified by the cited guide for hiding your identity after viewing another person’s Story.

How to turn off Activity Status
- Open Instagram and go to Settings. Depending on your version or device, the menu may be labeled Settings and Activity or Settings and privacy.
- Open Messages and story replies.
- Tap or click Show activity status, then switch it off. This is the route listed by Instagram Help; TechRadar’s January 2025 walkthrough gives the same general path for mobile and desktop.
If the labels differ in your app, search Settings for “activity status.” Turning it off affects online and recently active indicators, not the Story viewer list.

Ways to limit who sees Stories you post
Instagram’s audience tools apply to Stories you publish. They do not remove your view from someone else’s Story. Linktree’s guide describes these options:
- Private account: limits your Stories to approved followers.
- Close Friends: shares a Story with a selected smaller group.
- Hide story from: excludes selected accounts from future Stories you post.
If you do not want your view listed
The practical way to avoid being recorded as a viewer under the account you want to keep unlisted is not to open the Story while using that account. Do not rely on airplane mode, third-party viewer websites, or modified apps as dependable or official workarounds. Linktree notes that external Story-viewer tools are limited to public accounts and may pose privacy or security risks.
