Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. The selected USB will be erased. The drive is recovery media—not a backup of your personal files—so copy important data somewhere else before resetting or reinstalling Windows.
What a Windows 11 recovery drive does—and what it does not do
A recovery drive is bootable USB media for accessing recovery tools or reinstalling Windows if the PC cannot start. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 11 and are available in its Recovery options in Windows and Recovery Drive guides.

It does not contain your personal files. Reinstalling Windows from the recovery drive removes personal files, apps, and settings. Make a separate backup of documents, photos, and other files you need to keep; do not rely on the recovery USB to preserve them.
Create the recovery drive while Windows is working
- Prepare an empty USB drive. Move anything you want to keep off it first. Microsoft warns: “Use an empty USB drive because this process will erase any data that’s already stored on the drive.” The built-in instructions do not specify a universal minimum capacity; follow the utility’s prompts and your device maker’s guidance.
- Open the utility. Search Start for Recovery Drive and open it. You can also run
recoverydrive.exe. - Include system files. Make sure Back up system files to the recovery drive is selected, then choose Next.
- Select the USB drive. Confirm that you have chosen the intended drive, then choose Next and Create.
- Wait for completion. Leave the USB connected while Windows creates the media. Store the finished drive somewhere safe and accessible.
Microsoft recommends recreating recovery media annually so it includes newer Windows updates and improvements. The surfaced instructions do not give a publication date for that recommendation.

Prepare your PC and files before resetting
- Back up personal files separately. Verify that the files you need are copied to another drive or a backup location before starting a reset or reinstall.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled. Microsoft says the key is needed for most recovery options. See its Windows recovery options guidance before proceeding.
- Choose the recovery path deliberately. If Windows still starts, Reset this PC is a separate option that lets you choose whether to keep personal files, while removing apps and settings. Reinstalling from the recovery drive removes personal files, apps, and settings. The outcome depends on which path and options you select.
Use the USB if Windows will not start
- Connect the recovery drive and start the PC from the USB. The boot method varies by manufacturer and model; consult the device manual if needed.
- In Windows Recovery Environment, choose Recover from a drive.
- Choose Just remove my files or Fully clean the drive, then confirm to continue.
These choices lead to recovery from the drive, not a personal-file backup. Make sure you understand the consequences and have copied anything important before confirming.
If you do not have a recovery drive
The right fallback depends on whether Windows starts and what you are trying to fix. Microsoft’s recovery options overview includes alternatives, such as creating Windows installation media on another working PC. Use the option suited to your situation rather than assuming every recovery method preserves files.
