Set the preview image on your website page, not in the WhatsApp message: add an og:image Open Graph tag in the page’s HTML <head> and point it to a publicly accessible, absolute image URL. The documented guidance reproduced in the linked reference calls for an image under 600 KB, at least 300 pixels wide, and no wider than a 4:1 width-to-height ratio. These are general technical instructions, not India-specific rules.
How the WhatsApp link preview image is chosen
When a link is shared, the destination page’s metadata tells a messaging app what title, description, and image to use for a preview. The key image field is og:image. Changing the text of a WhatsApp message does not set the page’s preview image.

Choose an image and publish it
Use an image that represents the page being shared. Upload it somewhere publicly reachable, such as your website’s image directory. The image URL should work without a login to your website or CRM.

If you use a site builder or CMS, its social-sharing image field may populate this metadata, but the exact field and behavior depend on the platform. Check the HTML the server actually returns rather than assuming a setting has been emitted correctly.

Meet the documented image limits
- File size: under 600 KB.
- Width: at least 300 pixels.
- Width-to-height ratio: no greater than 4:1.
The referenced material does not specify an ideal image size, required file format, or guaranteed display crop. Do not treat a particular aspect ratio or format beyond those stated limits as a requirement.

Test the exact page and sharing workflow
Share the page URL through the same WhatsApp workflow your business actually uses, then check the received message for the intended title, description, and image. A manual paste into a personal chat can help check the page, but it does not show that a CRM or other sending tool requests previews for its message type.
What to check when the image does not appear
- The link does not open: Check the destination and any redirects separately. A broken destination is different from a missing preview image.
- The link opens, but no card appears: Inspect the HTML returned for that exact destination. Verify the tags are inside
<head>, appear early enough in the response, and contain the correct values. - The wrong image or no image appears: Confirm that
og:imagecontains an absolute URL and that the image can be fetched publicly without authentication. - It works in one chat but not through your business tool: Check whether the connected CRM, sending integration, and message type support preview requests. Repeat the test through the workflow that matters to the business.
- You changed the image but still see the old one: The available documentation does not establish how long WhatsApp caches a changed image. Test again through the relevant workflow; do not assume an immediate refresh is guaranteed.
Using WhatsApp branding in the image
A preview image does not have to contain WhatsApp artwork. If you choose to use WhatsApp marks, follow WhatsApp’s official brand assets and guidelines: do not alter the assets or imply partnership, sponsorship, or endorsement.
