For a channel built from existing on-demand videos, use AWS Elemental MediaTailor channel assembly: it schedules source manifests into a live, linear presentation while the media segments remain at their origin. Add MediaLive when you need to ingest and transcode live sources; use MediaPackage when you need to package encoder output behind playback endpoints. These services solve distinct parts of a workflow, and their respective resources called “channels” are not the same thing.
Choose the AWS service that matches the job
A virtual linear channel presents content in a scheduled sequence, like a conventional TV channel. The viewer receives a live-style stream, even when the programs are pre-existing VOD assets. In AWS, the central service for assembling that schedule is MediaTailor channel assembly.

MediaLive and MediaPackage also use the resource name “channel,” but AWS distinguishes those resources from a MediaTailor channel-assembly channel. Do not treat them as interchangeable.

What you need before creating the channel
- Content and manifests: Prepare the VOD assets and their manifests. MediaTailor source locations can point to origins such as Amazon S3, a web server, a CDN, or a packaging origin such as MediaPackage.
- An origin: MediaTailor retrieves manifests and assembles the linear presentation; the origin continues to serve the underlying media segments.
- A compatible output format: Decide whether the channel will output HLS or DASH. The source group’s package configuration must match the channel output format.
- An ad slate, if needed: If you plan to use ad breaks, have a suitable VOD slate available. Personalized insertion can use MediaTailor ad insertion.
- A schedule: Decide the order of programs and which VOD or live sources to include.
Create and start a MediaTailor channel
- Set up a source location. In MediaTailor, identify the origin URL that contains your source manifests. The source location tells the service where to retrieve them; it does not move the media segments into the channel.
- Register each VOD asset as a source. Add assets such as a movie, episode, or clip as VOD sources. Configure a package format and source group compatible with the format you intend to output, such as HLS or DASH.
- Create the channel output. Choose the output format and matching source group, assign a unique manifest name, and set the manifest window. AWS’s console setup instructions specify a window between 30 and 3,600 seconds. The manifest window is the sliding portion of the presentation available to a playback client; it is not the duration of the whole schedule.
- Set the channel policy deliberately. The policy determines who can request playback. The AWS procedure notes that a public policy is needed for MediaTailor ad insertion; consider the access implications before making an output public.
- Schedule programs. Add VOD or live sources as programs in the order they should play. Add optional ad breaks where required, for example by specifying a VOD slate.
- Start the channel. A newly created channel is stopped. Start it before testing; requesting playback before activation can return an HTTP 4xx response.
- Test the output playback URL. Once the channel is active, open its output playback URL in a compatible player and confirm that the manifest loads and programs appear in the intended order.
- Stop the channel when it is idle. AWS’s getting-started guide says an active channel is charged at $0.10 per hour and inactive, stopped channels are not charged. Delete the channel when it is no longer needed.
Plan the complete architecture and cost
For a VOD-led channel, MediaTailor assembles the schedule from existing source manifests; it is not an encoder or a storage origin for the media segments. For a workflow with live inputs that need encoding, MediaLive can ingest and transcode them. MediaPackage can then package encoder output behind endpoints, while MediaTailor handles channel assembly where needed. The correct design depends on source type, processing needs, packaging responsibility, and output compatibility.

The $0.10 per active channel hour figure is the channel fee shown in AWS’s getting-started guide; it is not a total workflow estimate. Budget separately for origin storage, encoding, CDN delivery, and ad services where applicable. The guide says stopped channels are not charged for the channel fee, so stop idle channels rather than leaving them active.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Playback returns HTTP 4xx: Check that the channel has been started. A newly created channel is stopped, and requesting playback before activation can produce this response.
- The output does not match the source format: Check that the channel output format and source group’s package configuration align. AWS documents HLS and DASH outputs.
- Programs are unavailable or fail to assemble: Confirm that the source location points to the correct origin URL and that the registered source manifests are available there.
- Ad insertion does not work: Check the channel policy; AWS’s procedure specifies a public policy for MediaTailor ad insertion. Also verify that the planned ad break and slate are configured as intended.
- Costs continue while the channel is unused: Check channel status and stop it when idle. Stopping addresses the active channel fee only; other services in the workflow may have separate costs.
