To add a variant to a shadcn/ui component, update the component source in your project: define the variant’s styles, expose its name through the component’s variant prop and type, and use that value where you render the component. shadcn/ui gives you source code to customize rather than a closed package override. The exact implementation depends on the component and your project setup.
What a variant means in shadcn/ui
A variant is a named option on a component API that selects a visual treatment or, where appropriate, a behavior. For example, a component might accept variant="outline" to render with an outlined appearance. The component’s implementation must define that option and its corresponding styles; adding a prop name alone does not create the treatment.

When adapting another component, follow the same basic contract: callers choose a supported variant, and the component maps that choice to its intended presentation. Keep the names meaningful to the people using the component; a variant name should communicate a deliberate, reusable option rather than an incidental one-off style.
Implement a variant in your project
Because the component source lives in your project, you can make the change where that component is defined. The exact file and styling pattern vary by component, so treat these as implementation checks rather than a universal code recipe.

- Find the component source. Open the component file your application imports, commonly under
components/ui/in the documented project layout. - Define the new style. Add the classes or other styling logic that produce the new appearance, following the component’s existing conventions.
- Expose the option. Make the variant available through the component’s public prop and type, and connect the selected value to the style definition.
- Use it at the call site. Pass the new variant value where you render the component, then confirm that the output matches the intended design.
- Check neighboring behavior. Verify the default appearance still works, existing variants remain intact, and the new value is accepted by the project’s type checking and styling setup.
Account for the project’s setup
There is no single installation recipe that applies to every shadcn/ui project. The official manual-install guide lists shadcn, class-variance-authority, cn, lucide-react, and tw-animate-css among its setup elements; it also covers project styles and import aliases. Follow the guide that matches your project rather than assuming every component needs every listed dependency: manual installation guide.

When to keep the change local—and when to share it
If the variant is for one application, editing the local component is usually the direct route: the API change and styling stay with the project that needs them. If you want to distribute the component for reuse in other projects, that is a separate concern. The official registry documentation models reusable components and styles as registry items, which can include files, dependencies, registry dependencies, and CSS variables where needed: registry documentation.

In other words, a local variant changes a component’s API and implementation within one project; a registry item packages material for distribution. Choose based on where the code must be maintained and reused, not merely because a variant was added.
