Your Wi-Fi Router May Have a VPN—But It May Not Do What You Expect

A router’s “VPN” feature can mean one of two different things: a VPN client that sends traffic from your home network to a remote VPN service, or a VPN server that lets you connect back to your home network while away. Neither feature automatically includes a commercial VPN subscription, and availability depends on your router’s model, firmware and supported protocol.

First, find out which VPN mode your router has

“VPN built-in” is not a single function. Router makers distinguish between connecting out to a VPN and connecting in to your home network. TP-Link describes these as separate use cases in its VPN scenarios and setup guidance; ASUS likewise explains the difference between VPN server and client modes.

VPN client: send home-network traffic to a remote VPN

In client mode, the router connects to a remote VPN endpoint. Depending on the router’s routing controls, you may be able to direct all household traffic—or only selected devices—through that connection. This is the mode to investigate if you want devices on your home Wi-Fi to use a VPN provider without configuring VPN software on each device.

VPN server: connect back to home while away

In server mode, the router provides a way for a traveling device to connect to your home network. This is useful for reaching devices or resources at home; it is not the same as routing everyday home internet traffic through a commercial VPN provider.

Does a router VPN include a VPN subscription?

No. A router’s VPN feature does not, by itself, give you an account with a commercial VPN provider. For the third-party VPN services it discusses, ASUS says a subscription is required. You still need a provider and compatible connection details if you want the router to act as a client for that service.

Check support on your exact router

Do not assume that every router from a manufacturer supports the same VPN options. TP-Link says VPN Client is not supported on all models. ASUS says support conditions can vary by region, model and firmware. Check the support page or specifications for your exact model and firmware rather than relying on a brand-wide feature list.

Also check which protocols the router accepts and which one your VPN provider supplies. ASUS advises confirming the connection type with the provider. TP-Link lists OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec and WireGuard for select models; that list is not a guarantee that every TP-Link router supports every protocol. See the relevant TP-Link VPN client guidance and ASUS’s VPN connection and WireGuard information.

Decide which devices should use the tunnel

Having a VPN client configured does not necessarily mean every device uses it. TP-Link’s setup lets users select devices for the VPN connection, while other devices continue using the regular internet connection. ASUS says per-device assignment through VPN Fusion is available only on certain models; without that feature, all devices may use the configured client tunnel. Check how your router handles routing before enabling the connection, especially if some devices need the normal internet route.

What to check if the router VPN does not work

  1. Write down the model and firmware version. Use the exact model’s official support page to confirm that the feature is supported in your region and firmware.
  2. Identify the mode in the router interface. Look for “VPN Client,” “VPN Server,” or a vendor-specific label such as “VPN Fusion.” Confirm that it matches your goal: connecting out to a VPN or reaching home from elsewhere.
  3. Match the provider’s connection details to the router. Confirm the protocol and endpoint information with your VPN provider. A provider setup that uses a protocol the router does not support will not work as a client connection.
  4. Review device routing. Check whether the router sends all devices through the tunnel or allows selected devices. If only some devices were assigned, devices outside that selection may still use the regular internet connection.
  5. Follow the instructions for your model. Router menus and supported settings differ, so use the manufacturer’s directions for the exact model rather than assuming a universal sequence of clicks.

For a concrete example of why model-specific instructions matter, TP-Link’s described interface allows up to six VPN server profiles but only one active profile at a time. That limit applies to the interface covered by its setup guide; it should not be assumed for other models or brands.

Some devices may not support VPN software directly

Router-level VPN routing can be an option when a device cannot run VPN software itself, provided the router supports the needed client mode and routing setup. ASUS states that “Some devices like set-top boxes, smart TVs and Blu-ray players do not support VPN software.” That is ASUS’s guidance, not a claim that every device in those categories lacks VPN support.
