Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo create a restore point in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, open Start, search for Create a restore point, open the matching result, select the System Protection tab, and choose Create. If protection is disabled for the system drive, turn it on first in Configure. Give the point a label such as Before installing graphics driver, then wait for Windows to confirm that it was created.
A restore point gives you a way to roll system state back after a problematic driver, application, or settings change. It is not a replacement for backing up personal documents, so keep a separate backup of files you cannot afford to lose.

What a restore point does
System Restore records a snapshot of important Windows system state. Depending on the point and the change being reversed, that state can include relevant system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. Restoring returns Windows to the selected point and can undo a change that made the computer unstable.

Microsoft’s documented workflow does not promise recovery of every personal file. Documents, photographs, mail archives, and other personal data should therefore be protected with an independent backup. A restore point is best viewed as a safety net for Windows itself before a risky change.

Check these prerequisites first
- You must be running Windows 7 or Windows Vista and have access to the desktop, or to Windows Recovery Environment if the system will not start normally.
- System Protection must be enabled on the drive that contains Windows. A manual point cannot be created while protection for that drive is off.
- Decide what change you are about to make so the point can be labeled clearly. A useful label identifies both the timing and the action, for example Before installing graphics driver or Before editing system settings.
- Keep a separate backup of personal files. System Restore and a document backup serve different purposes.
Create a restore point in Windows 7 or Vista
- Open the System Protection interface. Select Start and search for Create a restore point. Open the matching result. Windows opens System Properties on the System Protection tab.
- Check protection for the system drive. In the list of available drives, check the entry that contains Windows. The protection status must be on before you can make a point.
- Enable protection if necessary. If protection is off, select Configure. Choose Turn on system protection, set the maximum amount of disk space that Windows may use for restore points, and select Apply. Return to the System Protection tab after the setting is saved.
- Start the manual creation. Select Create…. The button is on the System Protection tab, alongside the controls for creating and restoring points.
- Enter a descriptive name. Type a description that identifies the change you are about to make. For example, Before installing graphics driver tells you more than a label such as Test. Windows supplies the date and time separately, so use the description for the purpose of the point.
- Confirm. Select Create again. Leave the computer alone while Windows creates the point.
- Wait for confirmation. Do not assume the operation succeeded merely because the dialog closed. Wait for Windows to display the confirmation that the restore point was created.
The same System Protection interface is used in both Windows 7 and Vista. The labels and path are substantially the same, so the procedure above applies to either version.
Choose a label you can recognize later
System Restore may list several points with dates and times. A label that records the planned action makes the correct choice much easier when you are troubleshooting. Use a short, specific description tied to the event:
- Before installing printer software
- Before graphics driver update
- Before changing network settings
- Before installing application
Avoid labels that describe only the symptom, such as Computer broken. The point should identify the state you want to return to, not the problem you hope to remove.

| Windows version | Automatic condition documented by Microsoft | What that means before a planned change |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Vista | Windows creates a scheduled restore point when no other restore point has been created in the previous 24 hours. | A point may not exist immediately before your installation or settings change. |
| Windows 7 | Windows creates a scheduled restore point when no other restore point has been created in the previous seven days. | The longer interval makes a manual point especially important before a driver, application, or system-settings change. |
These are automatic conditions, not a promise that a usable point exists at the exact moment you need one. Create a manual point immediately before a change when you want a clearly identified rollback option.
Restore from a working Windows session
If Windows still starts, you can launch System Restore from Control Panel or directly with its command.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Recovery.
- Choose Open System Restore.
- Alternatively, press Windows key + R, type
rstrui.exe, and press Enter. - Review the available points and select the one that predates the change you want to undo.
- If the wizard offers Scan for affected programs, run it before confirming. The scan helps show which programs and drivers may be affected by returning to that point.
- Select Next, review the selected point, and choose Finish.
- Confirm the operation when Windows asks. The computer restarts as part of the restore process.
Choose a point based on its date, time, and description. If the problem began after a particular installation, a point created before that installation is generally the relevant candidate. A restore operation changes system state; it does not create a separate backup of the current state, so make sure you have copied any newly created personal files before proceeding.

Microsoft notes that an encrypted device may require its BitLocker recovery key before recovery tools can access the installation. Keep that key available if the computer uses BitLocker encryption. WinRE can use a point even when Windows cannot complete a normal startup, provided an appropriate point exists.
Recover a Vista or Windows 7 account-logon problem
If you cannot sign in because of an account or logon problem, Microsoft documents using System Restore from recovery media or from the recovery options. Select an earlier point that predates the logon failure and let the recovery process complete. This path still depends on an appropriate restore point having been created; System Restore cannot select a point that does not exist.
Understand what is and is not rolled back
System items that can be affected
System Restore rolls system state back to the selected point. The documented scope includes relevant Windows system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. That is why a point made before a driver or software installation can help reverse the change.
Personal data needs separate protection
Do not treat a restore point as your only copy of personal data. Microsoft’s procedure does not promise recovery of every document or other personal file. Maintain an independent backup so that a system recovery operation and a file-recovery plan are not dependent on the same mechanism.

Restoration is a targeted recovery action
A point represents a prior system state, not an archive of every moment of computer use. Select the point that matches the event you are investigating, and read the affected-programs report when it is available before committing.

Return to the System Protection tab and check the status of the Windows system drive. Protection must be enabled on that drive. If it is off, select Configure, choose Turn on system protection, set the maximum disk-space amount, and select Apply before trying Create… again.
You cannot tell which drive to configure
System Protection lists drives individually. Identify the entry that contains the Windows installation and configure protection there. Enabling protection on a different drive does not provide the same protection for the system state on the Windows drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe point exists, but its purpose is unclear
Use the date and time together with the description you entered. This is why labels such as Before installing graphics driver are preferable to generic names. If several points are close together, select Scan for affected programs during the restore wizard when that option is available.

There is no point from before the failure
Automatic schedules do not guarantee a point before a particular installation. Vista’s documented interval is 24 hours and Windows 7’s is seven days, and either system may have no suitable point for the event you are investigating. In that situation, System Restore cannot recreate an earlier state that was never captured; use your separate file backup and other recovery options for anything the point cannot cover.
Windows cannot start normally
Do not rely on the desktop procedure when startup fails. Use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore in WinRE. If encryption prompts for a BitLocker recovery key, provide the key before continuing.

When to create one manually
Create a named point immediately before an action that can alter Windows system state:
- Installing or replacing a device driver, especially a graphics driver.
- Installing software that integrates with Windows or adds system components.
- Editing registry or other system settings.
- Making a substantial configuration change whose effect you may need to reverse.
Creating the point immediately beforehand removes the uncertainty caused by the different automatic schedules. After creation, wait for the success message and keep the description specific enough to identify the intended rollback boundary.
