If NieR Replicant keeps crashing on PC, begin with Square Enix’s own order: connect the computer to the internet, update the game, and then validate the Steam installation. Next test a completely unmodified launch with overlays and community files disabled. Only after that should you investigate Vjoy, resolution-specific rendering problems, or Proton launch options. This sequence separates damaged game files from input, mod, driver, and compatibility conflicts without assuming that one workaround fixes every computer.
Start with a controlled 10-minute check
Before changing several settings at once, note exactly what happens. Does the game close before the first menu, stop on a loading screen, show a black screen, crash after changing resolution, or become unresponsive only after playing for a while? The trigger determines which branch below is relevant.

- Restart Windows and close other game launchers, recording tools, overlays, and hardware-monitoring utilities.
- Confirm that Steam is online and that NieR Replicant is fully updated.
- Launch the game once with no mods, injected DLL files, or custom launch parameters.
- If it crashes, write down the last visible screen and whether Windows displays an error message. Do not apply several fixes before the next test.
A repeatable trigger is more useful than a generic “it crashes” description. A startup failure points toward installation or injected-software problems; a crash after a resolution change points toward display configuration; unresponsive controls point toward input devices rather than the game executable itself.

The June 2021 PC update, distributed as Steam patch 1.0.3, is the baseline for diagnosis. It addressed frame-rate behavior and creates a drawing_settings.ini file in the game’s user Documents folder. If Steam has not installed that update, later tests may be evaluating an obsolete build.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click NieR Replicant, choose Properties, and open Updates.
- Allow Steam to keep the game updated automatically, or close and reopen Steam to trigger a pending download.
- Wait for the download and disk activity to finish, then restart Steam before launching the game.
Do not copy a community configuration file over the newly updated one while establishing a baseline. If the game creates or changes drawing_settings.ini, leave it at its default state until an unmodified launch succeeds.
Validate the Steam installation
Square Enix specifically recommends Steam’s integrity check when the PC version crashes, refuses to start, or displays a black screen. The check compares local files with Steam’s stored version and replaces files that are missing or damaged. It does not remove every third-party file, so a clean launch is still necessary afterward.
- In Steam Library, right-click NieR Replicant and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files. Older Steam layouts call this tab Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam complete the scan and any download it schedules. Do not launch the game while the process is running.
- Restart Steam and test the game before restoring mods, overlays, or custom configuration.
If Steam reports that files were reacquired, that is evidence of a local installation problem, not proof that the hardware is defective. If verification completes successfully but the same trigger remains, continue with the clean-launch and input checks rather than repeatedly running verification.

Community fixes can be useful for performance or input issues, but they also add DLL files, hooks, and configuration values that make a crash harder to identify. PCGamingWiki lists NierReplicantFix and Special K as community remedies for performance and input problems. Neither should be part of the first crash test.

Disable overlays
- Turn off the Steam Overlay for the game in Steam’s per-game Properties screen.
- Exit chat, capture, graphics-tuning, and frame-rate overlay applications completely, not just their visible windows.
- Launch once, reproduce the same action, and record whether the result changes.
If disabling an overlay stops the crash, re-enable overlays one at a time to identify the conflicting component. Keep the working configuration until you have finished testing other causes.
Temporarily remove mods and injected DLL files
Close the game and rename community mod folders or DLL files instead of deleting them. Renaming preserves a reversible backup and prevents the loader from finding the files. Verify the game again if you are unsure which files are original, then launch the untouched installation. Restore one mod at a time only after the unmodified game has completed the previously failing sequence.
Check for a Vjoy input conflict
A Vjoy virtual controller can produce symptoms that look like a frozen or crashed game: keyboard and mouse controls may stop responding, or the game may show incorrect controller prompts. PCGamingWiki identifies Vjoy as a possible source of these conflicts.

- Press Windows, search for Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand the sections for human-interface devices and software or virtual controllers.
- If a Vjoy device is present and you do not need it for another application, right-click it and choose Disable device for a reversible test. Uninstall it only if disabling does not isolate the problem and you understand which other software depends on it.
- Disconnect unnecessary physical controllers, restart Windows, and test keyboard and mouse input.
Do not remove an input device that you need for accessibility or another game without first recording its name and creating a restoration plan. If controls work after Vjoy is disabled, re-enable it later and look for a way to limit its virtual device to the application that requires it.

Investigate resolution and graphics configuration
A crash immediately after changing resolution can leave a setting that the game or display driver cannot use reliably. First return to the last known working resolution through the game’s settings if you can reach the menu. If the game crashes before the menu, close it, back up the NieR Replicant configuration files in your Documents game folder, and rename the relevant configuration file so the game can create a fresh one at the next launch. Keep the backup; it may contain key bindings or other preferences you want to restore later.
Change one display variable per test: resolution, window mode, refresh rate, or graphics quality. Test a conservative resolution in borderless or windowed mode before returning to a high-resolution exclusive-fullscreen setup. A successful launch after one change identifies the setting to avoid, while changing several values at once hides the cause.
Do not confuse an ambient-occlusion artifact with a crash
PCGamingWiki documents a diagonal line appearing with ambient occlusion at resolutions above 3413×1920. That is a rendering defect, not evidence that the game has crashed. If the frame continues to update and input still works, lower the resolution or disable the affected effect rather than treating the artifact as a failed installation.
Check frame-rate behavior separately
The original PC release could behave incorrectly above 60 frames per second. Patch 1.0.3 added a 57–58 FPS limit to address that behavior. A game that runs unusually fast, animates incorrectly, or develops timing problems is not automatically suffering from the same cause as a desktop crash.

Confirm that the update is installed, leave the game’s frame-rate settings at their default values for testing, and avoid stacking multiple frame limiters until the baseline is stable. Record whether the failure is an actual process termination or only a speed, animation, or timing problem.
Use the Proton branch only on Linux
Proton troubleshooting applies to Linux or Steam Deck-style environments, not to a normal Windows Steam installation. PCGamingWiki lists the following launch options for missing visual effects under Proton:

- Stay on General and place the command in Launch Options.
- Launch under Proton and check whether the missing effects return.
- Remove the options when testing Windows, or when diagnosing a problem unrelated to missing visual effects.
Windows users should not add Proton variables to a standard Windows launch. On Windows, prioritize file validation, current graphics drivers, and an unmodified launch.
When Steam says the game is installed but it still crashes
“Installed” only means Steam has a registered installation directory; it does not prove that every file is readable or that injected software is compatible. Use this order:

- Exit Steam completely and restart Windows.
- Open Steam again, confirm the game is updated, and run Verify integrity of game files.
- Check that the drive containing the game has free space and is not reporting file-system errors. If Windows has shown disk warnings or other applications are also corrupting files, resolve that storage issue before reinstalling the game.
- Launch with overlays, mods, and custom DLL files disabled.
- Update the graphics driver through the hardware manufacturer’s normal Windows update channel, then reboot.
- Test a conservative resolution and window mode.
Reinstalling immediately can consume time without removing an overlay, Vjoy device, or incompatible driver. Consider a reinstall only after verification, a clean launch, and the relevant hardware checks have failed. Back up saves and configuration first; an uninstall can remove local files depending on Steam and Windows settings.

Retest one variable at a time
After every change, reproduce the same action that previously failed. If the game crashed while loading a save, use that save; if it failed after switching resolution, repeat that switch only after the baseline launch works. Keep a short log containing the date, game version, launch options, overlay state, controller or Vjoy state, resolution, and result.
- Startup crash: verify files, then test without overlays, mods, and injected DLLs.
- Black screen: verify files, try a conservative window mode, and check the graphics driver.
- Crash after resolution change: restore a backed-up configuration or rename it to force fresh defaults.
- Unresponsive controls: isolate Vjoy and other virtual controllers before changing graphics settings.
- Missing visual effects under Proton: use the DXVK launch options only in the Proton branch.
- Fast or mistimed gameplay: confirm patch 1.0.3 and distinguish frame-rate behavior from a terminated process.
If one change fixes the problem, document it before restoring anything. If no change helps, the record gives Steam or Square Enix support a useful reproduction path instead of a list of unrelated tweaks.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks

When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing settings when the game is stable, even if a cosmetic issue remains that does not affect play. Conversely, stop launching repeatedly if Windows is blue-screening, the storage device is reporting errors, or other programs are crashing; those signs indicate a wider system problem. Preserve saves and configuration, keep your one-change log, and provide the crash trigger, Steam verification result, game version, driver version, and whether a clean launch changed the behavior when seeking support.
