You can turn a sequence of audio files into a radio-style YouTube Live broadcast by having FFmpeg read and encode the audio, adding a still image or other video layer, and sending the result to YouTube’s ingest server with a stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The exact command depends on your files, FFmpeg build and visual design, so test the complete setup privately or unlisted before going live.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible and configured for live streaming. Check YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements before planning a broadcast; access and activation can depend on the channel.
- Audio files you have the rights to broadcast, arranged in the order you want them to play.
- FFmpeg installed with the input formats, encoders and output protocol support your workflow requires. Builds vary; check the FFmpeg documentation and protocol documentation for your version.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the complete video and audio stream.
- Optionally, an image or video layer. A radio-style broadcast still needs a deliberate visual output; audio alone does not define what viewers see.
Prepare the audio playlist
Choose whether playback ends or repeats
Decide whether the broadcast should play a finite sequence once or repeat it continuously. Make the intended order explicit and verify that every file is readable before starting the encoder. If you need a 24/7 loop, the playback design must return to the beginning of the sequence after it reaches the end; a command that merely reads files in order will not necessarily loop them.

Check file compatibility
FFmpeg can work with many formats, but combining files is not one universal operation. Concatenation methods depend on whether the inputs have compatible streams and codecs; differing formats may require decoding and re-encoding or another approach. Inspect the files and confirm the method against the FFmpeg version and input formats you actually use. The FFmpeg documentation covers demuxers, filters and muxers, including the components relevant to concatenation.
Choose a visual layer
For a simple radio presentation, use a still image, a visualizer or a looped video as the video source. Choose the output resolution and frame rate deliberately. If you use a still image, your FFmpeg command must turn it into a continuing video stream while the audio plays; do not assume an audio-only input will produce a valid video feed. The precise image-loop and filter options depend on your FFmpeg build and the output you want, so verify them against the FFmpeg documentation and test the rendered preview.

Set YouTube Live encoder parameters
YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026, list RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps in its advanced settings. These are platform recommendations, and YouTube may update them.
There is no single correct video bitrate for every stream. It depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. Select the row for your planned output in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution table; do not substitute a video-upload bitrate recommendation for a live-ingest setting. Keep the encoder’s rate control and keyframe interval aligned with YouTube’s published guidance.

- Frame rate and resolution: Choose settings that suit the still or video layer and the connection. Higher output settings need more bandwidth.
- Bitrate and keyframes: Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the exact codec and output combination, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval where possible; do not exceed four seconds.
Get the ingest URL and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to create or configure the live event.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that setup into your local encoder configuration.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it like a password: do not include a real key in a published command, screenshot, source-control repository or public log. Use a local configuration or another practical way to avoid exposing it in shared material.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before broadcasting again.
The exact Studio labels can vary with the live setup path. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains managing stream settings and keys.

When documenting or composing a command, a stream-key placeholder should be unmistakable, for example YOUR_STREAM_KEY. Replace it locally; never paste a real key into public examples. The exact input, loop, filter and mapping options cannot be safely generalized across different source files and FFmpeg builds. Confirm your installed encoders and protocol support, and check the relevant options in the FFmpeg documentation and protocol documentation.
- Start with a short private or unlisted test event in YouTube Studio.
- Run FFmpeg with your chosen audio sequence, visual layer, output codecs and YouTube ingest details.
- Wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. Verify that the image or video is correct, the audio is present and stable, and the stream health status is acceptable.
- Listen and watch long enough to catch gaps, clipping, unexpected black frames or a playlist that stops instead of repeating.
- Only after the test is sound should you use the intended audience setting and run the broadcast.
Keep enough upload bandwidth and monitor the live feed
YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health and messages while broadcasting. Its streaming tips recommend upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate. That margin is a recommendation, not a guarantee: a shared or unstable connection can still interrupt the feed. Reduce output demands or improve the connection if the encoder reports dropped frames or YouTube reports poor stream health. See YouTube’s streaming tips and YouTube’s live streaming tips.

End the broadcast and check the archive
When the program is over, stop the FFmpeg feed cleanly and confirm in YouTube Studio that the live event has ended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream lasting 12 hours or more. Check the event in Studio after ending it if you need to confirm whether a replay is available. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Incorrect ingest URL or key, unsupported output protocol, or a build lacking needed protocol support. | Compare the destination with the current values in Live Control Room, confirm the key is current, and verify the FFmpeg build’s protocol support in the protocol documentation. |
| Video appears but audio is missing | The intended audio stream was not mapped, the input failed to decode, or the chosen audio output is not configured as expected. | Check the FFmpeg output mapping and logs, confirm the source file plays, and use an audio codec YouTube lists for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Audio plays but the preview has no usable image | No video layer was supplied or the still-image/video input did not continue as expected. | Add and test an explicit visual source, resolution and frame rate; verify the input and filter options for your FFmpeg version. |
| Playback stops at the end of the playlist | The inputs were read sequentially without a repeat strategy. | Configure and test looping for the chosen sequence method; the correct approach depends on file compatibility and FFmpeg version. |
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Upload capacity or connection stability is insufficient for the total stream bitrate, or encoding demand exceeds the local system’s capacity. | Check encoder and Studio health messages, use the bitrate for the chosen output from YouTube’s table, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload margin. |
| YouTube rejects or has trouble with the output | Codec, bitrate, keyframe interval or other encoder settings do not match the selected live format. | Recheck the exact resolution, frame rate and codec against YouTube’s encoder recommendations; maintain CBR and do not exceed a four-second keyframe interval. |
| The stream unexpectedly loses authorization | The stream key was changed, reset or copied incorrectly. | Retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update the local configuration. If a key may have been exposed, reset it. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only stream audio and visuals you are authorized to use. A technically valid FFmpeg feed does not establish that a recording, composition, artwork or other material is cleared for a YouTube broadcast. Review YouTube’s live streaming guidance and applicable copyright rules, and check the channel’s monetization and reused-content policies separately if monetization matters. Do not assume that looping, crediting an artist or owning a recording automatically grants every right needed to broadcast it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer or home connection running the encoder continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the material from the cloud. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
