Set the Chrome window size explicitly, verify the viewport and clip in Puppeteer or Playwright, and compare CSS-pixel dimensions with the output image’s pixel dimensions. A full-page screenshot captures vertical scrollable content; it does not automatically fix a narrow horizontal capture. Without your command, page, and browser versions, there is no single root cause to assume.
1. Check the requested capture width
For Chrome’s command-line screenshot, set the window dimensions explicitly with --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT. Chrome’s documented example combines --screenshot and --window-size like this:

Check that the width is the intended CSS viewport width, rather than assuming Chrome’s default window matches the page width you want to capture. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference.

With Puppeteer or Playwright, inspect the configured viewport and the screenshot options. A clip specifies a rectangle using coordinates and dimensions; horizontally, its captured interval starts at x and extends by width. If that interval ends before the intended right edge, the screenshot will omit it.

Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s screenshot options include clip, fullPage, and captureBeyondViewport. Its fullPage option defaults to false. The documented default for captureBeyondViewport depends on whether a clip is supplied: it is false without a clip and true with one. Check that option if your clip reaches beyond the viewport. Consult the Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions reference for the API version you use.
Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot parameters include clip coordinates (x, y, width, and height) and a fullPage setting. Confirm that the clip covers the full intended horizontal range. The Playwright screenshot parameters document these controls.

3. Decide whether you need a viewport or full-page capture
A normal screenshot captures the visible viewport. Setting fullPage to true requests the full scrollable page; Playwright describes it as a screenshot of “the full scrollable page, instead of the currently visible viewport.” That setting concerns the page’s scrollable extent. Check horizontal width and clipping separately rather than treating fullPage as a guarantee that a wide layout will fit inside a narrow capture.
4. Compare CSS pixels with image pixels
Check whether the width you expect is measured in CSS pixels or in the output image’s pixels. Playwright’s scale options distinguish css—one image pixel per CSS pixel—from device, which produces device-pixel-resolution output and can result in a larger image on a high-DPI display. Compare the configured viewport, selected scale, and actual image dimensions before concluding that content was cropped.

5. Check the page layout and browser versions
If the viewport and clip cover the intended width, inspect the rendered page for horizontal overflow. Compare a normal viewport screenshot with the page’s scrollable width, then reproduce the problem using the same Chrome or Chromium and automation-library versions. A change after an upgrade makes version compatibility worth checking, but does not by itself establish the cause.
Puppeteer issue #11514, opened on December 12, 2023, describes a particular interaction involving captureBeyondViewport, deviceScaleFactor, and Chromium compatibility. It is a version-specific report, not evidence that this explains every right-side crop.

6. Collect a minimal reproduction if the crop persists
Record these details so the issue can be distinguished from page-specific layout or a capture-bounds mistake:
- Exact Chrome or Chromium version and Puppeteer or Playwright version.
- Launch arguments and configured viewport width and height.
deviceScaleFactorand the screenshot’s actual output dimensions.- Screenshot options, including
clip,fullPage, andcaptureBeyondViewport, where applicable. - The page’s measured scroll width and a URL or minimal page that reproduces the problem.
