You must choose between adapting a WooCommerce marketplace such as Dokan and using a purpose-built micro-jobs theme, then verify how the chosen setup handles service listings, orders, communication, completion, disputes, commissions, and payouts.
Start by mapping the marketplace workflow
Before choosing software, write down what buyers and sellers must be able to do. A service marketplace needs more than vendor accounts and product pages: it needs a coherent path from seller onboarding to a completed job and payment.

- Seller registration: Can service providers apply, create profiles, and provide the information your site requires?
- Gig submission and approval: Can sellers publish a defined service, price, scope, delivery time, and any options? Can an administrator review listings before they appear?
- Service discovery: Can buyers find services by category, location, price, or other criteria important to your marketplace?
- Buyer checkout: Can a buyer purchase a service with the right options and clear terms?
- Communication and delivery: How do buyer and seller exchange details, handle questions, and deliver the work?
- Completion and disputes: Who confirms completion, and what happens if the buyer and seller disagree?
- Reviews and fees: When can a buyer review a seller, how are platform fees calculated, and when does the seller receive funds?

| Decision point | WooCommerce plus Dokan | Purpose-built micro-jobs theme |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Dokan is a frontend multivendor marketplace plugin powered by WooCommerce. It requires WordPress with WooCommerce activated. Dokan repository | PremiumPress markets a WordPress micro-jobs theme. Its product page describes gig listings, buyer orders, online payments, and seller accounts. PremiumPress product page |
| Fit for service listings | A general multivendor product marketplace should not be assumed to provide freelance-service workflows by default. A WordPress.org support response around 2024 said Dokan’s default functionality could not meet this use case without advanced customization. WordPress.org support discussion | The vendor describes the theme for micro-jobs, but that claim does not independently confirm how every required service workflow works. |
| Workflow coverage | Validate each journey in your requirements list; expect to investigate extensions or custom development for service-specific steps. | Verify which capabilities are included and how messaging, disputes, completion approval, and payouts are handled. |
| Commissions | Dokan documents global, vendor, product, and category commission approaches. Dokan commission documentation | The cited product information does not establish a comparable commission configuration. |
| Compatibility and maintenance | Confirm compatibility among WordPress, WooCommerce, Dokan, extensions, payment integrations, and your theme. | Confirm current WordPress compatibility, included features, licensing, and update arrangements with the vendor. |
| Total cost | Calculate the cost of the plugin plan, any needed extensions, custom work, hosting, and ongoing maintenance; current totals are not established here. | Check the vendor’s current licensing and any additional costs for required functionality; a comparable total is not established here. |
Route A: Build on WooCommerce with Dokan
Dokan is a reasonable route to evaluate if WooCommerce is already useful to your project and you are prepared to validate or develop the service-specific workflow. The project describes Dokan as a frontend multivendor marketplace powered by WooCommerce, and its repository lists a working WordPress installation with WooCommerce as a prerequisite. #1 Best Overall
Dokan’s WordPress.org listing describes vendor and product management, commission collection, subscription packs, and payment integrations, while distinguishing features available in Pro. Check the live listing and the applicable plan before relying on a particular feature or integration; do not assume everything shown is included in the free version. Dokan on WordPress.org
A WordPress.org support response around 2024 cautioned that Dokan’s default functionality would not support a freelance or micro-jobs site for services such as painting and carpentry without advanced customization. That is a support response, not a current feature-by-feature audit. Treat it as a reason to verify the present documentation, extensions, and your exact workflows—not as proof that no configuration or extension can help. WordPress.org support discussion
Plan commissions deliberately
Dokan’s documentation describes four ways to set commissions: globally, by vendor, by product, or by category. Which model works depends on whether fees should be consistent across the marketplace or vary by seller, service, or service category. Dokan commission documentation
For illustration, Dokan’s documentation gives an example in which a $1,000 order with a $15 flat commission and a 10% commission produces $115 in combined commission. This is a documented example, not a recommended rate. Decide how your rules interact with discounts, refunds, taxes, payment processor fees, and payout timing, then test representative orders before launch. The cited documentation does not settle those operational or legal details.

PremiumPress markets a WordPress micro-jobs theme and describes gig listings, buyer orders, online payments, and seller accounts as included capabilities. These are vendor claims, not independently tested findings. PremiumPress product page
Before buying, compare the theme against your workflow checklist. Confirm what is included in the current license and how the product handles seller approval, buyer-seller communication, delivery, completion confirmation, disputes, reviews, commissions, and payouts. The cited product information does not establish those details for every step.
Validate the site before launch
Whether you adapt Dokan or use a micro-jobs theme, test the complete service journey with representative buyer and seller accounts. A feature appearing in a product description does not by itself show that the end-to-end process fits your policies.
Recommended Free Tools
- Submit a service listing as a seller and check any review or approval process.
- Find and buy that listing as a buyer, including any service options you plan to offer.
- Test communication, delivery, completion, and the path for resolving a disagreement.
- Check that the displayed fee matches the commission rules you chose, including cases involving a discount or refund.
- Confirm how and when seller funds are paid, and whether the payment integration supports the flow you intend to use.
- Check current compatibility and updates for WordPress, WooCommerce where applicable, the plugin or theme, and any extensions.
Do not treat marketplace payments as a single checkout setting: the buyer charge, platform commission, refunds, payment fees, and seller payout are separate parts of the operating model. The sources cited here do not resolve their legal or accounting treatment for your location, so establish those requirements for the markets in which you plan to operate.
